So I tried upgrading via the tool posted some pages ago, and I got reverted to Windows 8 and got this error, 0xC1900101 - 0x20017. What could be the cause of this?
Same thing happened to me, I figured I'd end up getting eventually.
In good news my $windows folder went from staying at 140mb to 4.66gb so I guess something's working.
whenever i use cortana it just say "I can't connect at the moment. Try again in a little bit."
I have my region set to US
I is possible to activate 10 using an 8 key like 8.1 could be, or am I gonna have to use the in-place upgrade option?
Looks like it's not possible. The reason there are some generic Win 10 keys floating around is because when you upgrade from Win 7/8/8.1 to 10, the validation is done on a hardware ID level. So by the time you do a clean Win 10 install, you can skip the CD Key part, and it'll validate on its own once you get online.
Note If you upgraded to Windows 10 on this PC by taking advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 on this PC in the past, you won't have a Windows 10 product key, and you can skip the product key page by selecting the Skip button. Your PC will activate online automatically so long as the same edition of Windows 10 was successfully activated on this PC by using the free Windows 10 upgrade offer.
Sorry to bother ya'll here again, but I'm wondering if it's safe to delete the "$Windows.~WS" folder since I'm going to try just redoing the Windows 10 setup.
Don't upgrade to Windows 10 if you have a G3258 CPU, there appears to be a major issue atm.
What happens:
Installing Windows 10 via the update tool from Windows 7 OR 8.1. ALSO OCCURS WITH A CLEAN INSTALL ISO! All CURRENT Retail and upgrade builds contain the code that does NOT allow the installation to work properly. The update runs checks, downloads Windows 10, and restarts. During the restart, the error occurs. There have been more than a few different error codes, but the error I got in particular was listed below.. When the computer restarts, the following error occurs:
Error:
0x1900101-0x20017 The installation failed in SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation
Took me forever to figure this out. Not used to the ribbon system yet, and trying to right-click Properties on the File Explorer to edit that sort of stuff as you would in Windows 7 just kicked me to the System screen and displayed all my hardware and software.

Hmm if that's the only folder created by the update, I'd say it's safe to remove it... give it a shot!
So, how can you update to Win10? I never got the noticed even though I'm reserved. :x
Well, fuck. Upgrading to windows 10 made my screen resolution literally 1024x768p. It won't let me fix it, either. Heeeelp.
Also for anyone that wants to change the login screen background:

Install display drivers.

Welp my laptop is up to Windows 10 now. Getting my usual applications on it. The system seems to be running ok after a reset, but I'm wondering if I should install the drivers from the backup partition.

Windows 8.1 is required. You cannot upgrade from regular Windows 8.
got it! this script shows the non-generic product key
So I had nothing better to do than install win10 in virtual machine and check the key this script shown me. And nope, it's invalid.
Ok, this is getting so annoying. I started the install at 2 PM and 8PM and so far only 19 percent of the install is done (the files have been copied 64% done).
I think it's too late to restart and try again...
And the sad thing is, it actually is installing. The HDD Light flashes and it DOES progress... Just extremely slow. Is there anything i can do?
I could use some help.

In my experience unless you use any of the built in features Win 10 gets all the relevant drivers you could need.

I mean like help menus and stuff.

What about updating via this? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install
It shows Windows 8 as a host PC to upgrade from, unless it's actually Windows 8 causing the error.

Everything seems to be working fine, and I'm quite content to see all the bloatware gone.
Is Windows 10's built in anti-virus solid or should I look into getting another?
I think the only way is to upgrade. But I believe this still won't allow you to use your key, it's just will be automatically activated via hardware id check. And yes, this means problems if hardware id will be changed after upgrading some pc parts.
This is for OEMs only, it's fine if you have a regular key.
Just installed, everything carried over fine
Got home at 8:50 and the reset was done, so it finished some time between 6:45 and then. It started before 2.

It seems like I'm the only person that likes cortana <.>
Chrome is super choppy when I scroll up or down, anyway to fix this?

I decided to fresh install 10240, now I can't activate. I really don't feel like installing 8.0 and upgrading to 8.1 and then upgrading back to 10. Anyone know how to get around this? I was under the impression you could fresh install so long as you upgrading to 10 via 7 or 8.1 previously.
Am I the only one who didnt have a single problem with Win10 upgrade on my main rig? Everything went smooth as butter and my key is not generic. The only issue I had was my mouse not appearing, which was my own fault.
ran into the same problem, free upgrade is meant to be done via Windows Update only
I could have swore though I read that after doing the upgrade you'd then be able to fresh install so long as you used a Microsoft Account.

no one knows
some people have a generic key but are activated, some people are apparently using a real key
