Mister Sandman tried to upgrade to 10, but it's stuck on a black screen. The PC is running, and it's making dinging noises, but nothing is working to fix it. The "Windows + P" stuff to fix it isn't doing anything, and restarting didn't work either. Can anyone offer help?

I'd make sure everything is okay before going and deleting that folder. It has Program Files in it, and occasionally sometimes things don't transfer over as they should.
Okay, so I didn't do a clean install, and came from windows 7. I'm missing the Store, Xbox live, OneNote, and other random microsoft stuff. How do I get them back...? They even appear as broken files.

I would be very ironic to suggest using the "Contact Support" application
Can you even run modern apps without DWM, or even the start menu?
start menu never required dwm iirc

Even though the icon is missing, that seems to actually pop up. I will have to use it later though.
I just managed to get W10 up and working, but uh, the start button doesn't work at all. Neither does the windows key. Any way to fix this?
[editline]e[/editline]
actually half the taskbar doesn't seem to work at all. The search doesn't work, the volume button doesn't work, and when I try to open a lot of stuff it gives me a message that says 'my free trial period has expired'
[editline]e[/editline]
and now all options to open control panel have disappeared and when I try to open things like 'Display' it gives me the same error
what the fuck is going on?

I run into this once every few days
Restarting Explorer through task manager usually fixes it on my end

Yeah I tried that, didn't do anything. Not to mention that that's just a fix for the start button, the rest of this stuff I have no idea what to make of it

OK I'm starting to get freaked the fuck out, not only can I not seem to find any way to open control panel, but when I try to open personalize or display or anything from the control panel it says the fucking free trial expired thing and then gives me another error that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."
I don't think I *have* a control panel anymore. What the fuck do I do?

Okay, I'm sorry if this has been asked a billion times.
I have Windows 8.1 Pro, so the one that will be available to me for free is Windows 10 Pro, correct?

It's a slight bit of a long shot, and I don't know if it's been suggested yet since I just came into this thread, but I've been having the same kind of problem too. It may not be what you want, but you can roll back to your old Windows install by:
1. Hitting Win+R to open Run and running 'msconfig'
2. Going to 'Boot', toggling the Safe boot checkbox, Applying and restarting
3. Opening and closing the Start menu, notification bar icons and Settings app
4. Repeating steps 1-2
5. Opening the Control Panel (Likely will have to do it through Right clicking Desktop and hitting Personalize) and going to Update & Security > Go back to Windows (Your Previous Version)
6. And waiting a rather long time for it to finish rolling back.
If you still can't get to Update & Security after turning off Safe Mode, try switching it back on and running Go back to Windows there.
Frankly, after that experience, I think I'm gonna hold out for a couple more months before upgrading. :vs:
So I just installed Windows 10 and I have a few questions:
1- Screen resolution won't go above 1024x768. My monitor is 1366x768. I looked it up and apparently I need the NVIDIA drivers. Okay, I downloaded it, it says that the file is not commonly downloaded and may harm my computer. Uhh okay, I open it and then it says "Non 7z archive.". What's going on?
2- I decided to download Vivaldi. It says that the file is commonly downloaded and may harm my computer. I open it and it just doesn't work.
3- Apparently I can't change my wallpaper because I need to activate Windows 10 before I can personalize my PC. Why? I'm coming from Windows 7.
after 2 days of agony i managed to upgrade
today was a good day
I have 3 monitors driven by 2 GTX 670s in surround mode and windows 8.1 used to treat each one individually when it comes to window maximizing. Now if I try to maximize in windows 10, it stretches the entire window across. Is there anyway to bring the old behavior back?
I cannot turn Cortana on even though I live in the UK :wavey: I tried the language pack suggestion but that hasn't helped.
The windows store is loading a blank white screen then after awhile saying the server is down.

Under Optional Features, add a feature, and add Speech Recognition and Text-To Speech.
Make sure speech, region and location are all set to uk.

Got it working :D I used Display Driver Uninstaller to get it working.

I've done that and Cortana still will not turn on.
My update keeps failing so I can't go up to Windows 10 yet :(.

Sounds like you had the same problem on my laptop where you have somehow installed the American version. I couldn't figure out how to get cortana to work other than a full reinstall with the correct iso.

a bit late to the party, Microsoft? :v:
I've updated and reverted back to 8.1 twice. I'm trying to get my internet connection working but still to no avail. The wireless and the Ethernet connection aren't working on 10. Any ideas?
I have the license, it was given free to me as a student, now since updating to Windows 10 I have to reinstall it and it won't work. Literally can't install the drivers for my GTX 960 either, defiantly a lot of early release bugs.
Okay, so here's the thing. You didn't own Photoshop. Nobody ever does.
You owned a license to use a specific version of Photoshop. That version no longer works in Windows 10.
Now, you can either subscribe to CC and move on, or you can contact Adobe support (which we are not) and figure this out. Either way, we can't really help you. It sucks, but that's life.

Here's the part where I try to make things look snazzy. Just gotta do some new steam grid images because I forgot to back mine up.
