I thought this was supposed to be a Windows 8 update?
I thought this was supposed to be a Windows 8 update?
It certainly looks more like Windows 8.2 than Windows 9.
I wish they would just revamp the entire thing and just let people choose how DPI scaling actually works, like choosing the precise size of a monitor and what kind of scaling programs run at (nearest neighbor >2x upscaling for older apps, something like hq4x for high detail or biliniar / bicubic scaling for a smoother look, for instance). And vector art or extremely high resolution assets for windows' theme so it scales correctly no matter what size it is, whether it's 4K, 8K, 16K or whatever.
The UI doesn't need to be refreshed, it needs to be rewritten so laptops and desktops can actually move into high-DPI and using Windows on a tablet isn't an exercise in hunt-and-peck precision (or blurriness).

It's not even a milestone build, there's still a lot of time for polishing.

I was following the Windows 7 and 8 threads since they first leaked, the early builds looked almost exactly like vista/7, I'm pretty sure this is gonna look at lot different near the end of the development cycle if they're promising to rework the status bar entirely

I completely forgot about all that. I remember people complaining about 7 looking like Vista and saying it was shit because of it. Good times.
Also all the endless fussing about SuperFetch. :rolleye:

People also genuinely hated the Start Menu in 7. It wasn't a common opinion, but they would always complain about how MS is forcing their OS on people because they removed the option for the Classic Start Menu that was in XP and Vista.
People get really violent when it comes to that little menu you see a fraction of the time your on your PC.

Oh, hopefully they'll get some serious work between now and April, then.
I love Win8 but even in beta stage there was plenty to gripe about which was fixed in 8.1, so I guess I'll remain optimistic.

for larger images as well. (They don't do compression as much as imgur, if at all)
Hopefully it has better DPI scaling since 4K displays are gonna get real popular real fast.
I hope they get rid of those glossy icons that are in since vista since nothing else is glossy.
I also hope they never get rid of that start button right click menu. Just too useful.
I hope the new taskbar won't split the community in half, like almost everything else did
Only thing I can think of that everybody was fine with is the Explorer window layout in Vista and above, but that's just because the sidebar in XP was a complete useless waste of space
Personally I'm afraid this is gonna make it worse. Honestly I prefer Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, them bringing back the old stuff made it worse IMO.

Metro supports DPI scaling quite well, but desktop apps are fucked, and will remain that way, and there isn't much that MS can do about it.

microsoft cares too much about legacy shit to even bother

This. The Windows API's that most apps use weren't designed with scaling in mind, the best Microsoft can do is just resize the viewport of the app. It's mostly up the the developer to make sure their application scales well.
Though what I'd love to see from Microsoft is a whole new set of desktop API's that are built with modern things like DPI scaling in mind.

Doesen't WPF support High-DPI displays?

the least they could do would be to make dpi scaling properly configurable so it has legacy support but doesn't look like ass

In what way? Everything I can think about 8 -> 8.1 is a direct upgrade.
Why don't they just let the users style windows/taskbars/everything like linux users have been doing for years now.
You're disabling it wrong
Funny, seeing as that it's the only way to actually disable it. I disable it via registry just as I use the auto sign-on feature (auto-fills my domain account password). It's insecure, and hey, I'll pay the price, but I just prefer the quick responsiveness this way.
As a software dev I take my personal preferences aside and follow the MS guidelines when I'm actually programming though.
i hope they include ability to adjust app volume
because you have to lower your whole computer volume so you could listen without going deaf
anyways, if its a free upgrade from 8.1, i'm digging it then

I hope they kill RT, Bay Trail + full Win is arguably better in all aspects.

The tablet interface works well on tablets, the desktop interface works well on desktops.
I think one of the additional problems is the convertible notebook computers / touchsceen laptops. They're really trying hard to push Windows 8 through those.

They could still kill Windows RT (arm) and disable the desktop interface for X86 tablets and vice versa. Even in Metro, Full win8 has a larger app selection than RT (and a bigger app selection is what metro mode needs the most).
rt is not going to die anyway because windows phone is gonna become a part of it
Speaking of unnecessary Windows versions, is there going to be a 32-bit version of 9?
And if yes, WHY?

Supposedly I heard that Windows 8 would be the last 32 bit mainstream Windows OS. It wouldn't shock me if they kept 32 bit alive for legacy hardware and software. But virtualization is so cheap nowadays they could always do that instead.
