Do you mean Windows 10 was running in VMWare or running VMWare in Windows 10? If you mean running VMWare on Windows 10 then yeah, shutting down a VM freezes Windows.
I mean that. Thank you for also confirming this, is it still happening in the latest build?
is visual studio totally boned for anyone else on 10. the UI hitches constantly for me
Try disabling any programs that tap into the way it renders, things with overlays like Fraps or Mumble might be doing it. Mumble was doing it for me until I disabled the overlay.

Installed Intel chipset with the the latest revision (Cpu Upgrade from AMD) and any time the Windows Search Index became active, the screen started flickering purple, CPU and HDD usage went to 95%, and everytime the purple flashed, Explorer.exe would crash and restart placing me in a nearly broken loop. I could get out temporarily by going into the CAD or Lock menu, but I had to give up and revert back to my Windows 7 install.
I hope Windows 10 has better compatibility than 8 & 8.1. I didn't upgrade to 8 because Medieval Total war didn't work on it, and it's one of my all time favourite games. It makes me wonder why compatibility mode even exists when old games don't even work in compatibility mode. Really don't want to have to use a virtual machine with an unsupported OS which can't be bought any more just to play old games.

It does work sometimes, just not always. Its probably going to get worse before it gets better though. If it stopped working as of 8, something changed that it depended on, and I doubt Microsoft is going to go back just to fix that one thing. Unfortunately, keeping old OS's around for old games is a reality, and is mandatory in many cases (your not going to get 16 bit DOS and Windows 3.1 games to run in Windows x64). Not much you can do.

It was a challenge, but definitely worth it.
I just can't get build 9879 running smoothly. explorer.exe just goes on a crash spree. I don't mean once or twice. I don't mean every few minutes. I mean every 2 seconds. This is on two different machines, one which was upgraded from the previous build and one with a clean install from a pro ISO. The latter actually having been reinstalled for this very issue which immediately re-appeared. It seems to happen some time after installing Visual Studio. It's fun to test nevertheless, everything else works well - even if it does mean I'm running things from command prompt.
Both my Laptop and Desktop have updated to a new build this week. The thing is, a Windows.old have been created and fills up quite a lot. How do I delete that thing, I don't see it in "Disk Clean-up" menu like mentioned on different guides? Oh yeh, and already tried deleting it, but I don't have permission.

There'll also be a hidden $Windows.BT folder under C:\ which I believe acts as the recovery files if a build upgrade goes wrong, you're choice to delete - I did. For both I simply change the file owner to myself and then I can simply shift+delete the folders.

Could you (Or anyone else) elaborate on how you do this? - Mostly regarding the user permission.
The WinBeta folks got hold of a build featuring Cortana: [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA0Sk28TsP8[/hd] http://www.winbeta.org/news/exclusive-heres-cortana-running-desktop-windows-10
Interesting, but I hate talking to my devices, it's just weird to me.
Interesting, but I hate talking to my devices, it's just weird to me.
Probably would take written commands too. Will be surprised if it didn't actually
Probably would take written commands too. Will be surprised if it didn't actually
At that point I'd rather just do the actions directly.
idk, I totally dig Google Now, wish there was a more convenient implementation of it than having to open a tab with Google
? Mind you, this is dev channel Chrome, so I'm not sure if it's in the stable channel.

So...I can't seem to use 10 on my laptop for more than the initial boot or the system instantly hoses itself once I reboot. I have no idea why...
9901 Leaked. Here's some screenshots: http://www.thecollectionbook.info/gallery/?f=/windows/nt%20kernel/windows%2010/10.0.9901.0/english/technical%20preview
I like how they chose Cortana as the name. I really hope they move from Metro as far as possible. I never have liked blocks and flat colors in technology. Looks lazy. I like my see-through windows and fancy task bar.
I'm definitely liking the Allchin-era attitude that Gabe is having regarding leaks. Sinofsky would fume if he were in charge and actually once terminated employees on the spot for leaking a Win7 build (and this was before the Microsoft Confidential disclaimer was added in to 8/8.1/10 builds).
Interesting. The new camera app is a straight port from the Windows Phone app. check it
We added the option to choose which folder is the default when opening File Explorer, which many of you requested. We also added the ability to turn off recent files and/or frequent folders in “Home”, and added a little animation/transition when opening the Start menu, which were also frequently requested. There are a great many more but we’ll wait to talk about those in more detail soon.
I'm really liking this new development workflow, the transparency is appreciated.
I find the open development workflow very fitting for something thats being used by hundrets of millions of people. Windows 10 is shaping up to be a very good operating system. With the recent open-sourcing of the .NET environment, I wonder if they start to open-source various parts of the Windows ecosystem (cmd.exe, explorer.exe, windows shell, etc...), so we can replace or improve certain essential windows programs. The Explorer could really benefit by supporting long filenames, seriously. And cmd.exe / powershell.exe could really need 256-Color support.

You have to change the values of the 16 presets' value in the registry. http://stackingcode.com/blog/2011/11/14/zenburn-powershell

So I just installed the preview, but im stuck on build 9841. I've tried windows update and that preview setting thing but I can't get a new build anywhere (I did sing up to be an insider). Does anyone know what's up? This is what i see on the preview setting screen: [t]http://i.imgur.com/9vIVzll.png[/t]
