If you really wanna put on the tinfoil, how can we even know what the OS is and isn't monitoring?
What it says in the TOS and what it is actually doing could be different. I'm not saying it is, but unless windows becomes open source we can't know.
Somebody should run a packet sniffer on their router and see what it's doing (if you're paranoid, you wouldn't run a packet sniffer in the OS itself, because the OS could just hide that information from applications running within it, but it can't hide anything from the router)
Windows 10 and steam are having a bad time with this latest build :(

How so.

I've seen a lot of people report of their games and steam are just closing randomly
I've seen a lot of people report of their games and steam are just closing randomly
I'm Installing Windows 10 tomorrow on my main. I'll see if that holds true for me.
when I had the previous build I couldn't download any custom files from tf2/gmod or any source game and TF2 crashed randomly after ~10mins with an Access Violation error.
Has anyone seen anything on how good the new battery saver mode is? Like, has any tech site done a study or anything like that?
I've seen a lot of people report of their games and steam are just closing randomly
TF2 started shitting itself yesterday for me, but I had also just started a song with the Grooveshark plugin on the server I was on so it's very much possible that was the cause more so than Win10.
Apart from that I haven't had any problem aside from Fallout getting a little more stuttery, but nothing I can do about Bethesda being trash v:v:v

Steam itself is crashing. When I play CS:GO, sometimes it'll CTD and steam crashes.

Strange, been using steam almost daily since the 10 TP came out without any issues.

Same here, I haven't been having any problems with steam as of lately, on the newest technical preview.
But it probably just is a problem with Phrozen99's hardware config.

This has been an issue since 9879 involving VAC-secure games and steamservice.exe. 9926 made it slightly better in terms of making those crashes less frequent, but there's still the occasional crashing involving those games. Should we send in support tickets asking Valve to cancel any pending VAC bans against us or should we just wait for either MS or Valve to actually fix things?
I don't think Steam sees it as a VAC infringement, just that something in the new Windows code causes the VAC code to crash and take the game down with it.

Nobody has been VACcinated for playing VAC-secure games on Windows 10, and it'd be insane if the VAC system did do so.

If it did, valve would revert them, because they aren't cheats
false positives are really rare though

Without a doubt, especially after the resulting outcry.
I would actually be surprised if Valve didn't and it had to take Microsoft pressure to do so.

It is technically an unrecognized modification to important DLLs, and last I checked VAC just bans for that sort of thing unless it's specifically whitelisted.
I'm not worried about my account at all, worst case scenario I have to wait for Valve to reverse it, I was just wondering if I had to take any action myself.

By that logic you'd get banned for using different linux distros. You won't.

wouldn't one have to tamper directly with a game running VAC for anything to happen? I doubt Windows would directly modify a DLL it doesn't own, and if VAC relies on a modified Windows DLL, I imagine it would just crash instead as we've experienced

lol valve wouldn't reverse a vac ban
valve literally has 1 guy on customer support and he doesn't deal with vac bans

There's precedent. Valve has reversed VAC bans in the past, there was a game a few years ago that threw false flags for some reason and there was a big hubbub about it.

VAC has only banned GNU/Linux players once, and that was only when players ran games through the WINE fork Cedega.
VAC checks if the games DLL library is modified, good example is when a Call of Duty game updated once modifying DLLs, VAC wasn't updated simultaneously, resulting in a fair amount of players receiving a ban.
Both cases where reverted

That's the one I was thinking of.

Correct, you would need to test access to the memory of a game's process in order for VAC to bite you.

And when the Call Of Duty one happened Valve gave everyone banned a copy of Left 4 Dead 2

MSFT IS ACTUALLY OPENING UP WINDOWS RT/WoA
Did hell just freeze over?
Judging by the snow and ice out here, yes it must be.
Well, that's a surprise. I was just thinking about what they were gonna do with Windows RT - it's been a total failure, and I was just thinking that they might be able to integrate parts of it in Windows 10 Phone.
Doesn't really make sense to maintain RT if it's only going to be for developers - kinda expensive for what it is. I guess they want people to create Metro apps on the hardware?
