I was hoping this would be the version where they actually take the UI seriously. Oh well, the new features look cool but I don't think I'll end up using most of them.
This is a leaked early version we were never meant to see. For all we know most UI changes are still being worked on in labs and weren't added in to this version yet. Remember, Windows 8 looked like Windows 7 with square corners until the release.
Yes, but Didn't WinFS get canceled?
It's been off and on since 1990. Bill Gates said in 2013 it would come back eventually. Most of it is in SQL Server now so I don't think it'd be too difficult to bring it back.
Hello! Microsoft's going to have an event at the end of the month: http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/15/6151417/windows-9-event-september-30th-san-francisco
September 30th Who called it?
Date was rumored since august.
Actually it's in honor of my 21st birthday. The question is which drinking game do I play...(I kid)
Actually it's in honor of my 21st birthday. The question is which drinking game do I play...(I kid)
If you are turning 21, the only drinking game is "shots until you black out." Work for me was really fun the day after my 21st... :v:
http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-9-resolution-support-up-to-8k-better-dpi-scaling
about damn time. I hope they find a solution on making current non-highdpi programs not look like absolute barf. [editline]20th September 2014[/editline] http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/18/6375419/microsoft-office-16-features-screenshots Not really Windows 9, but the new Office version looks pretty nice.

In 2013 the only color they use is pure white, even in the "dark" theme. Also another thing they're bringing back is:
Those transparent taskbar screenshots look really nice, are they going for the Chrome OS look?
I should think so, it's been around since at least 8.1.
Why aren't they simply adding vector support to explorer icons? Honestly there's no excuse anymore in this age of flat design and high dpi desktop displays
UI elements in general that are defined in pixels and not a size independent format, are dumb. [editline]21st September 2014[/editline] Specially in 2014.
I meant this. [t]https://s3.amazonaws.com/pushbullet-uploads/udxZS-UEWPmgxANzFrhRO14N8qdoP5q8wOTbhx/44258599.jpg[/t]
That looks really good. That's a huge step forward. I really hope that's real. Also, is it me, or does the icon for documents suggest a new documents app? It does bother me that they've got that search button and the search bar is right next to it when you open the start menu. I don't get what it's for. Maybe that's just a placeholder for Cortana. [editline]21st September 2014[/editline] Oh sweet, and I just noticed, the start menu background is transparent.
Why aren't they simply adding vector support to explorer icons? Honestly there's no excuse anymore in this age of flat design and high dpi desktop displays
Probably so they can control the sharpness on fine lines and details.

Looks like it's transparent
Looks like it's transparent
Hmm, it is too That's actually pretty cool having a transparent icon for it

So stoked right now. I actually REALLY like 8.1 and I can't wait for 9.
Where did you get this from? I hope that Windows 9 will have a subscription model. If it does I'm buying it immediately.
I hope that Windows 9 will have a subscription model. If it does I'm buying it immediately.
Highly unlikely that this will happen. Especially since all other OS's are now free (OSX, ChromeOS/ChromiumOS, *NIX, *BSD). [editline]23rd September 2014[/editline] They will probably offer a free version which will probably force you to use MS services (MS Account only) and such. [editline]23rd September 2014[/editline] Gonna assume that Satya Nutella will focus more on the Cloud aspect and offer a free Windows 9 that is tightly integrated into the Microsoft Cloud environment.
Well free sounds even better.
don't count on it
