Windows has just been like that for me for my entire life, including every single time when I haven't even done anything weird to it. Installing/uninstalling things, general use... I mean yeah sure in theory I probably could use the same Windows install from 2010 but after a while it'd just get really painful with being slow and clunky. Also, older installs tend to generate more bizarre errors in my experience.
Normally, it takes a fair bit longer for a Windows install to get that crufty but these are the previews, and MS did push out some crap builds, especially in the fast lane (which is the point of the fast lane but still).

Chances are the problems I develop can actually be fixed without reinstalling, but since Windows isn't good about giving me specific details like Linux is I can't exactly manage that
Same here, Half an year using Windows and i have to format and reinstall all it over again because it gets clunky and full of errors which pops out of nowhere, seems like the Windows registry is the one to blame, as a lot of programs don't uninstall properly and end up leaving a lot of crap to such an level we have to use an software as ccleaner to clean the OS.
I just hope they are gonna fix the registry by running applications in a sandbox as they said they are going to do.

The registery is really not any different then dropping a config file somewhere in the filesystem.
The registry itself is a filesystem and claiming it causes a slowdown is like claiming the more files you have on your harddisk the slower your PC is.
I don't know why your system slows down over time, but i can tell you its not down to the registry.

Funny how I only had to reinstall after installing my new SSD back in January - running the same installation for more than 2 years.
I haven't reinstalled since Windows 8 came out, and I'm not having any slowdown problems. Not perceivable anyhow.

Can I get windows 10 if I reserve a copy on my laptop which happends to be running windows 8. And use that key of windows 10 on my main pc if I just torrent it when it releases? Without changing OS on my laptop.
I got windows 7 on my main pc but well you know. I do have genuine on all my other work related pc's thought.
I think as long as you have a legit Windows 7 / 8 key (That isn't business or RT) you'll be fine.
I don't know if it's my touchpad drivers or a windows setting doing this
but when I swipe left on my touchpad Cortana goes on listen mode and instantly does a Bing search for whatever she thinks I said
Doesn't help that my mic on this laptop is shit, I was talking to my bf on skype about cats and I swiped left, Cortana heard "cats" as "cocks" and did a Bing search for cocks and shoved it in my face

These voice assistants learn from what you've said to them before :v:
When the upgrade comes out for Windows 7/8 in the next few days, will it require me to format my PC and do a clean install? And if so will I be able to leave my second HDD alone? It's got a ton of storage on it I don't want to lose.

But wont it just be a upgrade key? So it would not work on my main pc.

I would assume that the installation needs to take place first
If that's the case, just grab the key post-installation unfortunately

Any way to just get the key they promised and not install Windows 10?

Maybe in the future. Consumer computers are getting stronger and more energy-efficent so in the end it can probably run something like that without taking much power or memory.

So my mom's decided to buy a Surface 3. Anything I should say about that, or is it pretty capable as an Office and PowerPoint machine? I'm not totally familiar with them, but I've heard good things.

If it's anything like the Surface Pro 3, which I have, it'll be great. I really like the device, have no real complaints. The pen might be a worthwhile investment if she ever wants to take notes as that isn't included, and obviously the keyboard is seperate. The free Office 365 subscription is nice though.
You know what 10 really needs? They need to bring back the brightness slider in the quick settings panel. That was really nice in 8 and the preset percentages aren't doing it for me.

So it should replace her iPad and her Macbook? She only uses Office and IBM SPSS on her laptop, both of which are Windows programs, so I'm thinking she'll be fine.

Is it the Surface 3 or the Surface Pro 3? Big difference. Surface 3 is Windows RT while Surface Pro 3 runs full Windows 8.1. The RT version cannot run regular windows programs but it does come with a special version of office which works on it.
