The only thing I have to do now is kill UAC and I'm done.

Imagine giving absolutely anything root access without giving a shit
I never really had any problems with UAC, not even in Windows Vista.
Some system services rely on UAC, Apps also require UAC.
I assume he's not actually turning UAC off, he's just turning the notifications off, which is only a part of UAC.
At the moment malware is launching itself and UAC is blocking it through popups, your system is already compromised.

Good luck with that. You can disable it in gpedit, but you will break everything that is a metro app. That consists of pretty much every system app, including the Settings and Windows Update. Yay!
Imagine giving absolutely anything root access without giving a shit
Lots of people are capable of handling that level of responsibility. UAC is also horribly inconvenient and not exactly the most effective solution.

Wow... Completely missed that there was another page...
Some people thought I was joking that UAC does not turn off metro apps but it actually fucking does, it's hilarious. Nah I only did it this time to a point where it doesn't dim but I would love it if it would whitelist known applications or at least have an option saying that "oh you've ran this before would you like to add it to UAC's whitelist" just so everytime I try and run first time set up on steam it doesn't do this:

Why would you run the Steam first time setup more than once per installation of Windows?
I assume I'm not the only one who plays Diablo and WoW in this thread, anyone else struggle with the Battle.Net updater constantly invoking UAC every like 10 minutes?
Games don't start unless I do first time setup. Brand new install of steam and Windows 10, just added library and it still asks for first time install.
Of course it would. You wouldn't need to authorise the SteamService again except if you reinstall Windows. I don't see how this is a problem.
I assume I'm not the only one who plays Diablo and WoW in this thread, anyone else struggle with the Battle.Net updater constantly invoking UAC every like 10 minutes?
Hasn't been a problem for me. It would only do it when I quit a game that ran off the Battle.net client.
The problem is that even though I've hit yes once it will still trigger if I go and do first time setup. I can yes bypass this through a task scheduler trick.
schtasks /run /TN "steamservice.exe"
But then I have to point it towards the game I want to do first time setup.
This isn't really ideal. There is no way to authorize steamservice.exe and let it run by itself uninterrupted with UAC turned on.
That's my issue.
Have you had this problem on any other version of Windows?
Yeah. Windows 8 and 8.1 did the same thing.
I have Steam itself installed on a separate hard drive, and when launching Steam.exe after a fresh Windows install it only requests authorisation once, for steamservice.exe, then it takes about 5-10 minutes to set itself up.
Ahh.
I have steam on my SSD(which also happens to be my OS drive) and my steam library is on another HDD.
Wondering if that's the reason why.
Probably, I've not used the library feature before.
Have you tried changing the Log On credentials for SteamService? (Services.msc -> Steam Client Service -> Right Click -> Properties -> Log On tab) For testing, perhaps an admin account might work.
That, or changing the ACLs (Access Control Lists) for the library (Properties -> Security Tab). However, I think your Registry is not getting written to by Steam's first time setup. So, you'll have to open the SteamApps Registry entries and change them to make each affected game look like it has already gone through setup. You could also change the ACLs for the SteamApps Registry keys.
I always turn off UAC and have never had problems. What are you on?
Can't you just disable UAC prompts?

I do this and Metro apps still work, in 8, at least. And I never get UAC prompts.
UAC (like foozball) is the devil...

Use these .reg files to default it to Windows Photo Viewer:

Saw it in the LMAO pics thread.
Pretty sure that's fake. What it can do in search is suggest store applications, but no proper ads.

Yeah, I saw a later post saying it was fake, my bad.

he's talking about steamservice installing the game prereqs

Question regarding activation.
I installed 10130 on my laptop quite a while back (clean install), then never touched it again. Recently I updated it to 10240 with no issues.
So yesterday, I decided to update my desktop's Windows 8.1 installation to Windows 10 using the same ISO, then update it to 10240. But now it won't activate (specifically, it says the activation server has blocked the product key. Note that I didn't enter any, I assume it used the default insider preview code).
What I'd like to know is whether it's safe to wait until release (will it activate automatically?) or whether I should roll back to Windows 8.1 and wait until release to update to Windows 10 (and whether that's even possible).
I think it would be safer to roll back to 8.1 and wait
Alright so for anyone in the same situation: don't bother rolling back.
It rolled me back to 10130. I can't roll back further.
[editline].[/editline]
Managed to activate it? I used a Windows 8 key (not the 8.1 upgrade, not the original 7 key), and while the activation process didn't appear to do anything, after rebooting, Windows claims to be activated.
I've gotten nothing but BSODs when upgrading, and it invalidated my W7 key causing me to have to reformat back to w7. Too bad I lost my W7 key. In quite the pickle.

Close all Steam processes, run Steam itself (not SteamService) as administrator for a few days. Eventually SteamService will correct itself and this will cease to happen.
It wasn't only for dialogs, but for entire system: icon layout on desktop didn't save and any folders' settings too. The Shell Bags in registry that contain this information just were not created and I had no idea what caused it in the first place and nothing helped.
So I just reinstalled out of despair, hours wasted.
It broke again, I have no fucking idea.

Process Monitor shows that it tries to access AllFolders Bag instead of individual Bag.
why :suicide:

Yea I was going to move to 10 tonight since I got some new hardware and just read the keys were officially revoked. I couldn't use a 7 pro key could I?
I can't set my PIN to be the lock screen password for some reason. Or change it.
Has there been any troubleshooting for this?

Try resetting it. It was just the automatic login method after I set it up.
Why the hell does W10 use the first five letters of your email as your user folder name when you install fresh using your Microsoft account? I noticed on both my computers the user folder is named "zacha" and now I'm gonna have to reinstall both and make sure to set local accounts first since it's bugging me.
