Why the hell does W10 use the first five letters of your email as your user folder name when you install fresh using your Microsoft account? I noticed on both my computers the user folder is named "zacha" and now I'm gonna have to reinstall both and make sure to set local accounts first since it's bugging me.
My MSA name is set up correctly so I don't understand why it did this. I googled the issue and I found a bunch of others who had it as well.
I just wish I was given the option to set my own name through the normal set up procedure. I don't know why it would default to something like this. This is on 10240 as well.
Is there any benefits in terms of performance if I switch to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 right now?
My card is a GTX980 so DX12 is obviously no problem for me.

You'll never really know without running some benchmarks, I can't honestly tell if my games are running better, could be a placebo effect.
Windows 10 does feel a tiny bit more stable though. A tiny bit, ish.

Been using Windows 7 since ever. What do you mean by more stable since it never crashes?
Can I stop Windows 10 from downloading in the background when it gets released? I don't want space wasted with an OS I won't be using for a while.

Also is it true I am forced to update Windows 10 Home? I can't make it ask first?

If your current license is a home (premium) license, you'll get Windows 10 Home. What did you expect (not meant to be snarky)? Only Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise will get updated to anything but Home.

I meant update updates, not updating to the Home OS.

You can probably delay updates by a week or the like, but no, at some point you'll have to install them. You don't have to reserve Windows 10 before the 29th to get it for free.
Will changing to a local account deactivate my Windows 10 RTM?
How will this work on the 29th? Will those of us on the Preview just have an update to install the full version of windows or will we have to do a proper install/setup

I think it pulls a default out of its ass.
The same MS account has given me "nrfoc_000", "nrfoc" and "nrfoconnor", and the last two were on the same OS installation.
I've reserved my copy. Does anyone know if it'll give me the option to format before installing or will I have to put it on a disc/USB stick and do it myself?
Hoping the RTM will be available on MSDN immediately.
Whenever I open an image with the standard file picker (Paint, Chrome, Photoshop) it hangs the entire app (I recall having this issue back with like 10074 but thought it had been fixed), resulting in errors I never thought I'd see

What the fuck am I doing wrong? The event log sheds no light except an "Application Hang" event, of which Chrome's one has a binary dump of "C r o s s - t h r e a d" in the data block (Paint's is "U N K N O W N")
Weird, you're not opening some stupidly large image files or anything?
Weird, you're not opening some stupidly large image files or anything?
Literally any image format and size.
I would just say "fuck it" and reinstall, but maybe someone else has an idea. I use all of those programs to open images and everything's been fine on 10240. Have you been upgrading since 9926 or something? I could imagine some stuff could and would break if that were the case. I went from 7>8.1>10166>10240 and everything's been working perfectly so far.
Maybe something's up with the hard drive, maybe try running a check disk.

This is a clean install of 10240 on a known working SSD. The only stuff I've got that could possibly be interfering with explorer are tortoisegit and winrar, but both of those are installed on my Surface (also running 10240) with absolutely no issues.

I know this was a few pages back but GTA V works fine for me. I just waited to test it because of scripthook.
can someone explain to me exactly what the upgrade entails? like, am i going to have to reinstall all of my programs to get full functionality (context menu entries, programs set to startup automatically, etc.) or is that stuff going to transfer?

Everything transfers. There may be one or two programs that doesn't work properly right of the bat, for me that was my Apache installation. Regardless, context menu entries transfer, programs set to start automatically still do. All your files are untouched

I honestly regret missing the chance to take the screenshot when the "Windows has recovered from a graphics driver error" message that was showing while this was happening.
Apparently PIN isn't working. Tried resetting it but nope.
