Do you realize you tried to put DDR2 Ram with a DDR3 motherboard? ECS...eww...how about Asus or MSI?
I didn't, actually. Fixed now.
$600...let's see... Athlon II x2 250 -> $60 HD5770 -> $150 Some MOBO (785G?) -> $70 640GB HDD -> $60 Disc Drive -> $30 Corsair 450Watt -> $50 Antec 900 -> $100 4GB DDR3 -> $90 I feel like I'm missing something, but t'hell withit. $610
I'm not. Point me to a page of statistics that show a quad core vastly outperforming a CURRENT dual core, and I might change my tune. But until I see statistics that show that it's fucking amazing (which I haven't), shut up.
Run GTA IV on a dual core, and then on a quad core and judge for yourself.
Despite the fact that game is well known to be a cunt to run on almost every system? [editline]09:59AM[/editline] And is everyone forgetting it's a budget system?
Here's the cheapest DDR2 Ram without a rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161241 DDR2 has gone up a lot in price.
The price of DDR2/3 hasn't changed, the value of our currency went into the toilet. Takes more dollars/pounds/euros to buy same amount of product. You can thank Bush/Obama/Retarded bankers for that. You can still find some really cheap memory on the spot market (usually 50% or more cheaper) from new-old stock, or people just getting rid of their old stuff. It is much riskier though because many of the memory modules in the spot market are bad, and the seller knows it. You can make it less of a risk by only buying name brand memory that has a lifetime warranty so you can send it in for repair.
AMD Athlon II X4 630: $100 ASRock M3A770DE: $60 G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB DDR3 1600: $106 Gigabyte 5770: $145 Corsair 650W: $75 COOLER MASTER ELITE 335: $50 Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB: $56 (OP states that he has a DVD drive, so no optical purchase) Total: $592

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/97?vs=88 There's a quad-core beating a current dual-core. Now shut up. [editline]02:31PM[/editline] Just to avoid confusion early. On the charts that the quad-core is below the dual-core still means that the quad-core wins. Take a look under the category title to see how the scoring is determined. It worked.
So on average you gain 10 frames a sec? considering we're talking solely about gaming here, nothing else, I don't see that being the extra dough on.. well, not even just a budget system. Yeah it benchmarks better but you're gaining 10 frames/sec, why not take the money you'd save on the CPU and put it towards a better GPU that might get you an extra 50 frames/sec?

And why consider solely gaming? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. And please, tell me. What GPU has a 50FPS gain on the 5770?
Considering GAMING because GAMING is specified in the title, and how the fuck often are you going to be doing anything else in that benchmark? And what? Where'd the 5770 come from? I wasn't talking about any specific card, I was speaking in generalities.
Look at this quad (the 630) :http://www.anandtech.com/show/2836/8 It's really cheap and it nearly performs as good as the i5 at some games... If it's a budget pc, it's a good quad.. And in crysis it scores pretty good..

I've been thinking about getting the Athlon II X4 630 instead of the Phenom II X4 955. Is the Phenom really worth it?
http://anandtech.com/bench/Product/88?vs=105 (Keep in mind that a higher bar isn't always better, check the description on the side for what is) You can decide whether it's worth it to you. The phenom overclocks well, and very easily, so you should probably take that into consideration.
