It appears I can get a free windows 8.1 professional upgrade key through my school.
I despise metro and the lack of start menu, but I know there are apps to bring back the start menu. Is there absolutely any way to disable the start screen or atleast make desktop the default?
Launch to desktop is a taskbar setting as of 8.1. You can also use applications like Start8 to bring the Start Menu back. I don't, because I don't really care (they are different means to the same end to me), but each to his/her own.
I found I can go with the 290 and still keep my 4670k, but I'm worried about the noise of the damn thing.
Is it really as loud as people make it out to be? Can I get an aftermarket cooler to replace it if it is?

That looks quite expensive for what you're getting, plus it doesn't take the VRMs into account.
I've seen Arctic Cooling doing their own 3-fan system for about £30, does that sound good?
I just use a free version of Start8
I came home to see a letter sent using Royal Mail. I thought to myself, what the f--- could this be, only to be reminded that it was from Facepunch! Got my christmas card today :)
speaking to my stepfather about the internet thing was a no dice. wondering if I should just buy my own internet altogether instead of trying to get around his firewall
People will probably hate me for saying this, but to be fair, it's his connection, and thus, he has full rights to decide what it should and what it should not be used for. If you've got a good enough signal covery, a cheap 4G connection would probably be your best bet to get access to the things your stepfather will not allow on his connection.
And if he somehow starts messing with that connection as well, he has absolutely no legal rights to do so. (Unless you're below the age of 18, that is, but if so, you won't be able to sign a contract with an ISP, anyway).

...Well then. This is interesting.
Let me blogpunch for a second here: just came back from downtown, and it's fucking spooky there. 75% of stores were empty, closed and fenced/shuttered down, or had all windows covered in paint (or all three). There were more storeowners running up and down the streets lugging merchandise around (to cars or houses) than actual shoppers. On my bus ride I saw two or three big stores that were reinforcing fences or welding them shut.
Apparently, the police think they aren't getting enough cash, and their form of complaining about it is just holing up in their stations and not working. At all. And that's enough to bring out the worst in people and for them to loot entire provinces' worth of stores in a couple nights. And that's going to happen here in a day or two.
Scary shit.

Until there's some concrete proof I'd take all that with a doritos's bag of salt.

So I finally took the time to finish Bioshock Infinite. Boy did I get hardcore mindfucked. Like I understand the ending and all of that, but still I just wasn't expecting it. Damn that was a good game, wish I'd played through it sooner.

Best mindfuck ending ever, because it makes sense in retrospect, ties up a lot of the things that didn't make sense, but even with all that stuff hinting at it you still can't see it coming, and it still leaves you with some unanswered questions.
I really should play BioShock again soon.

I'm not sure the ending to any other game has made me feel so many emotions.

Or leave me as totally fucking blown away by what I'd just seen.

There's a lot of stuff that makes absolutely no sense in the last part if you think about it, though. I mean, don't get me wrong I thought it was a great game, but I think they lost sight of it themselves at the end.
KOTOR had the best plot twist though.

I also like how it made certain things in the first and second Bioshock make a lot more sense.

Woah, my monitor seems to like refusing to reconnect to my PC after I leave it to go to sleep. This only just started happening today so I can only assume it was an update that caused it.
I'm only on an 8800gt, but would a driver update help?
Got four copyright claims today on the new systems.

I never noticed the creepy face in your avatar, TrafficMan.
I got an lg g2 today. The basic launcher is really grossing me out. I'm in the Aviate beta, and I may just use that for now, but I kind of want a more "traditional" android launcher. Just simple. One home screen with a weather/clock widget along with a plain app drawer. Ideas?
A teacher is having problems with a thief.
I suggested the idea of using motion detection and video recording software to attempt to catch em in the act. The teacher likes that idea.
This will be fun.

Reinstalled OS and upgraded to Windows 8.1
I changed a few settings, so now when I press the Super-key, instead of the old Start screen, it shows this instead:
