gonna wait until tomorrow and see what I can do about the networking thing. other than that, do you guys think a 38 bits password is enough security for my password database and my boot parition (TrueCrypt)? I have 120 bits or higher on everything else, but I don't know if a 38 bits password is strong enough for vital things like my password database?
I always go with 100+ on anything offline.
here's zenmates web store link https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fdcgdnkidjaadafnichfpabhfomcebme
I always go with 100+ on anything offline.
how am I supposed to remember a 100+ bits password though? I need to have something which is easy to remember while being secure. I can't use my password database to log into my encrypted drive because I don't have access to it at all yet, and I can't use a password I don't remember for my password database because then I won't be able to access my other passwords that I can't remember :v: [editline]10th December 2013[/editline]
here's zenmates web store link https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fdcgdnkidjaadafnichfpabhfomcebme
[t]http://puu.sh/5IpmP.png[/t] forgot to mention that HTTPS websites does not work without the certificate my stepfather uses to sniff my secure traffic :v: can't access the chrome store
My suggestion is talk to your dad, you're over 18 and if he thinks that you shouldn't have access to porn then he's a loony talking to him might also reveal his intentions and give you a better idea of what to do if that doesn't work out

the only solution then is to find a dial up ISP good luck blocking that
Or a VPN, I'm pretty sure that's a much better alternative unless that's blocked too
Or a VPN, I'm pretty sure that's a much better alternative unless that's blocked too
VPNs are completely blocked. I started with them but he ended up blocking them after a while
You should still be able to access HTTPS sites, but Chrome *should* only warn you about them, not block them completely.
it's completely blocked for me without the certificate, sadly. I can use firefox to add an exception but chrome doesn't allow me to do anything like that
Due to the shortage of R9 series, my desktop just got into a state of limbo. Should I buy a R9 290x now, or get an R9 290, and try to wait for when they become super cheap and maybe get another? [editline]10th December 2013[/editline] R9 290x s are now $625
Have you considered using a VM and changing the virtual network adapter's MAC address and using that for your private traffic, while using the host for your typical activities? Unless your dad has set up port security on the switch, the worst that would happen is the new host would override the old host's connection (until the old host does a dhcp renew).

The lack of a certificate makes your traffic unsecured to everyone, not just your stepfather.
Err. The lack of a certificate makes your traffic unsecured to everyone, not just your stepfather.
I imagine this is how it works. His stepfather's firewall is outright blocking the certificate he would normally use. He needs a special cert to make the browser think he has a secure connection to the website, which the firewall decrypts, logs, and reencrypts sending his data to the site and vice-versa. Its a textbook man-in-the-middle attack by taking advantages of loopholes in the way cert based security works. At least I THINK that's what he means. I won't lie. All of this seems a bit....excessive for a home network.

If you setup a second wireless router, hide the SSID. Should be good enough for his dad. Also, it's a bit paranoid though keep your computer setup as it is, so there's some traffic. Then great a VM hooked up to a wireless card / dongle so you can browse inside of that. This way he'll still see some regular everyday traffic. If the modem is also a router and has multiple ports, you should be able to plug your new router directly into the modem. This way, he wouldn't see any changes on the firewall. However, there could be some issues if you put the new router in between the modem and the firewall.

At which point he's stuck again.

I'll try to switch out some cables so I'm directly connected to the router tomorrow to see if I'm blocked by anything then, then I'll buy one of those small portable routers and hide it within the cisco router (thx lord crypto for your terrorist ideas)
get a 780
A gtx 780 is still about the same price, but with less performance than the 290x
But the 290x is a leaf blower.
Non-ref cards/nzxt g10
Non-ref cards/nzxt g10
Aren't out yet.
Aren't out yet.
Already waited 1.5 years, couple weeks isn't too bad
Already waited 1.5 years, couple weeks isn't too bad
If we even get that, we have no information on non-ref cards at all right now. For all we know AMD made all the OEMs sign a contract that made it so they can't do non-ref designs or some shit.
