Hell, so much so that there have been some rumours going around that Intel might kill desktop core development entirely, Develop desktop chips as beefed up atoms (Yes. Really.), and devote the new resources to building an entirely new core series for Xeon, and compete where they really getting hit hard. Keep in mind, this is entirely a rumour, could be complete bullshit but honestly... I want it. Intel's getting hit extremely hard in the server market right now, 2s and up, where the money matters. Power8 is a fucking MONSTER. There is no Xeon that will compete with that. Not with Intels current trends. The only way they'll beat them is with their cache, mem latency and fab advantage. That's the ONLY place where Xeon will beat it, plus the P8 core is fully licensable. IBM's playing HARD and it's put Intel in a tight spot, but this could be the an awesome thing to re-invigorate development from Intel. If you really want more than a beefed up Atom in your desktop, build a Xeon workstation. Low end Xeons would still remain cheap, and would be better.
Not a completely unreasonable rumor. When I was designing a series of chips (not actual chips obviously, just general specs), I went with a three-tier approach - one between Cortex-A15 and Atom, one between Atom and Core, and one above Core. The first was for phones and cheap tablets, the second for "ultratablets", laptops and small desktops, and the last for desktops and workstations (servers had all kinds of strange permutations, including some that had some of each). Intel's current lineup works, but in a general way, not fitting into any niche very well. I'm not sure the big competition is from Power8, though. Too many places are wed to x86, or just don't trust PowerPC for whatever reason. I'd imagine Bulldozer-based Opterons are at least as large a part of it, since many-core fits well with virtualized hosting. Then again I don't do much with "heavy" servers - the servers I "administer" (somehow writing the code that runs on them means I do the maintenance too) are all VMs with weaker specs than my laptop.
Saw this on reddit. Retarded but funny
Today I learned an important lesson about using Compact Flash cards as SSD's. Those cheap 2, 4, 8 and 16gb cards are great if you work exclusively with older systems when the IDE but was generally mode 0 and the odd high-end controller supported mode 1. Same goes for SCSI-1. Once you get into the newer stuff that supports stuff like UDMA you begin to see WHY those cards are so cheap. They stick to the original CF standard where mac throughput is 1.6Mbit/s. It's hard to explain how that one card can make a dual 1.4ghz PIII server with two gigs of ram and a virgin OS install run so slowly. It isn't made any better with virtual memory disabled. Simple things such as opening the start menu can take a few seconds.

My D430's HDD in there is dying and I really need to get it on its feet again.
I'm back, bitches
Still, I'm currently unemployed and don't use my camera much, so if I was going to throw $200 at something, I'd rather it go to my server or car. On the other hand, I might start using the camera again if I have some decent lenses to work with. But it will have to wait.
It's cool. You just made it sound like $200 was a lot for a lens. You might find some good deals on used lenses.
You can also consider renting

Why would you ever write a VM for something terrible in something even worse
Happy new year everybody!

Yes or no, should I upgrade to Windows 8?
FB, come on...
bottom left is my post
Yes or no, should I upgrade to Windows 8?
Do any features of Windows 8 entice you? Do you find any offputting? Do have the personality type that is easily angered because a button moved a few pixels or do you learn those things quickly? Are you willing to shell out the dosh for those improvements? Seriously answer these questions. Personally, I think if your on Windows 7 and didn't get a copy of Win8 for really cheap or free, its probably not worth it. There's some performance improvements and I like some aspects of the UI more than Windows 7. But I wouldn't shell out the $100 for it if I'm not making an entirely new build.

Do it I shall!
Dual boot to try it since it's free anyway, what i did. Probably switching back to my Win7 copy once the code runs out. Windows is damn expensive
Have a good drunk-as-fuck new years! In other news: I am drunk as fuck. Also, for my new-years party, I found one of my soviet-russian aged S90 and a home-built amp and my dad's old laptop with Spotify and a bottle of my mothers rum.
I want a Pacific Rim video game with Rift + Omni + arm and torso motion tracking.

Anyone here who has experience with building litecoin/bitcoin mining rigs want to hit me up on steam? (or just reply to this post i guess)
overclocked my i5-2500k today help
Did you actually attempt OC'ing or did you do something random and now it reads those clock speeds?
I tried OCing to with a multiplier of 45 (which should be 4.5ghz, according to my mobo) and now it's sitting at 7.14GHz with 50c full load. oh, and my CPU Vcore is 1.3v
