Windows phone 7 and 8 run natively on the hardware while Android runs in a virtual machine, hence why Windows phone devices have much Lower spec than Android. It's because it's not needed. Windows phone can render 60fps just fine everywhere too.
I've been using Android for the last 2.5 years and my experience is mixed, probably because I have a potato phone and haven't used fad devices extensively enough but I like many things in Android that isn't anywhere else.
I'll still try someone else's Windows phone or tablet but I don't see myself getting one myself. Except for a windows laptop.
Android isn't in a VM, but everything it runs is (Including NDK. It's JNI). And WP7 apps are also in a VM. It's just an extremely better one. WP8 can support true native apps but not all that much uses it. From a technical perspective, WP8 is VASTLY better engineered than Android in many ways, although some through a more fixed hardware control, and there's still a bunch of technical stupidities.
Yeah, maybe I'm biased because I work exclusively with .NET for my job and I'm a raging Windows fanboy, but Windows apps are a pleasure to develop, too. My small stint with trying to make an Android hello world was insanely difficult - but I can have a pretty well functioning Metro app in under an hour.
Say what you will about Microsoft but they treat developers of their platforms pretty well.
I blame Java for a lot of androids lag and issues
Besides being poorly made in the first place
I'm learning Java and I've been reading up and down about the inefficiencies and annoyances of Java
I'd get a windows phone if it wasn't for apps being horrible. Don't get me wrong, most apps are probably pretty good. But I have a friend with a windows phone, and I see apps leaving a black bar in the top of the screen, etc. And apps like Kik don't even run in the background, so everytime he goes into it, he has to wait like 3 seconds for it to open. It just seems like a very beta experience as far as I've seen. I'd give it a chance, but I'm afraid I'd end up with a phone that'd stop getting updates half year from now. The Nexus 5 is what I'm saving up for and it seems like a good choice for me.

Java isn't at fault. Dalvik technically isn't Java, it's a custom VM.

I'd love to experience using a high end smartphone running Android on a daily basis. I'd be able to actually make phone calls without lagging! And I guess do a bunch of other stuff.
If SwiftKey and some other Android exclusive apps made it onto Windows phone o even iOS I'd be all over it. Oh and Google drive and maybe Chrome (?).
i just want a phone browser that supports userscripts and isn't a huge piece of shit (hello opera mobile)
My RAZR is starting to age. My dialer crashes occasionally requiring a restart before it works again, other times videos won't play unless I wipe my cache and dalvik.

Thats probably because he closes the app making it having to start up again. And there are plenty of apps.
Twitter,6tag(Instagram) 6snap(snapchat),facebook,skype, Mytube ( probably the best youtube app i have ever used on a device. Spotify, Whats app, Viber, Vine, UC Browser if you want a better browsing experience. MetroMail if you want to use gmail.
Livegaming which is a twitch app with which you can even chat, which you couldn't in the official app for twitch. Also has battlenet authenticator if you play blizzard games. Snes8X for Snes rom's.

But is there stuff like emulators? And can you even use stuff like Bluetooth controllers on windows phones?

Yes. Depends on the software but Moga support is getting popular which is nice, unsure about other stuff (Never tried. Will need to investigate)

Well i guess windows phone isn't for you, as Google really doesn't give a shit about it and you are in google's ecosystem. The only google stuff i use is Gmail and Youtube, Other than that i use Firefox and skydrive, hotmail, skype etc.
Also i never really liked mobile web browsing that much. Id rather use my tablet, much bigger display.
Btw i really liked these videos:

The same happens with iOS apps but not with a black bar or anything.

With GDR3 you can use the MOGA Controller for it. Don't know about other bluetooth controllers.
How about wireless screen mirroring? A friend with an android phone mirrored his phone screen onto our smart TV, it was pretty cool.
And, (getting into things I'd most likely never use anyway) how about OTG USB? Is that a thing?

Nokia Beamer.
Can't use USB OTG with mass storage. I'd like to test other stuff like controllers but I don't have a USB OTG cable.

What for? I've never had a use other than controllers, but I never gamed on my phone much to begin with.
What for? I've never had a use other than controllers, but I never gamed on my phone much to begin with.
Well I've used them to connect wireless keyboard and mouse combos and use a phone or tablet as a desktop similar to a Windows RT.
It's not something I'd do often since I don't have a wireless keyboard and mouse combo that's not the main one I use on a computer, which would be silly to use it back and forth. So I'd rather connect bluetooth keyboard and mouse and not have to use OTG. Plus I can charge whatever device I'm using too.
I've connected an external hard drive via OTG onto my phone, ran an FTP server off it and was able to access files off the external hard drive. I've yet to see if this works for uPnP media server or not. Or maybe it's just the apps fault or it can't search the mounted volume. The main issue is power, there doesn't seem to be a way to connect OTG and have it charging at the same time. Power seems to be unable to charge the device as every OTG cable I've looked for would only give power to the device connected rather than the host.

Anyone know why my iPhone 3GS's battery has gone from 'Lasting about two days with some usage' to 'Completely drains overnight without any use at all' with no changes to apps/tweaks in between?

The 3GS is quite old. Maybe it's time for a new battery?
