Whats the best/fastest way to transfer files between two laptops on the same network? My main laptop's hinge has broken so i'm having to send it back to be repaired if it's still in warranty. If it isn't im fucked :/. But I have an old terrible laptop to use for now.

Ethernet crossover cable and SMB shares. With GbE you often end up bottlenecked on disk, not network.

I don't have a ethernet crossover cable and I need to transfer these files tonight so I don't damage the laptop further/crack the screen with the broken hinge. Could I do the SMB shares over wireless?

Well at least its going to be better than someone causing my death, my Dad quite often turns off the heating in cold weather. I have absolutely no doubt he would do so in double negative temperatures.

Yes, although if it's a huge number of files it might be too slow. When I was copying 30GB of music to a new computer, the ETA over wireless was something like two days. Using a crossover cable cut it to half an hour. Using a regular Ethernet cable going to the switch/router (from both) should be somewhere in the middle, unless it's a GbE switch in which case is should be just as fast.

I'm loving this year at uni with electric at a flat rate being included in my rent. Two desktops and a laptop 24/7 and my 1500W fan heater when I need it, why not?

After some un-scientific testing (downloading the same album in three different formats and listening to it) I literally can't tell the difference between AAC/FLAC/320MP3. it's probably my crap speakers.

Yeah you can do it wirelessly through wlan or even run a ftp server if you wanted to
