I'm pretty sure the Flash in my Galaxy S2 gets better performance than that RAID.
I think the 4GB Microdrive I have in my PFSense box gets better performance than that.
You're honestly the last person I'd expect to hear anything like this in any context :v:
SCSI RAID is nice and all but that's if you're running a Pentium Pro or some PowerPC mac.
If I could, I would of moved to Fiber channel ages ago but the two main problems are the sleds and controllers are still quite expensive and used drives are generally so worn out it's not worth trying to reuse them.
Then stop masturbating over old bad hardware.
Brt, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.
You see, I'm not a well off person and I didn't grow up in a well-off family. For as long as I can remember we have all been living off hand-me-down's. It's not that I intentionally want to use old shit, it's that we can't afford new shit.
Please remember that.

that's lovely
but i'm sure you can find a computer newer than 1999 for a couple hundred bucks on craiglist
You can find decent dual core desktops for a couple hundred dollars
Or even for free, if you just check a local recycling center
it is nice that replacement thinkpad parts are so cheap
I use my T42 to steam chat and as a textbook in class when it's -10C outside and I don't want to carry around my $1200 laptop, had to find a replacement motherboard and it was $16 with free shipping
Dude's wasting a Titan's worth of cash, every month, by using tech that old.
I don't know what use-case that's for, but if it's a small home server, imagine one of those motherboards with an Atom built in, with a small SSD, could probably run the damn thing off a small solar panel.

Isn't the thinkpad heavier...?
Or even for free, if you just check a local recycling center
The only parts of my computer I've paid money for are my heatsink, and SSD. :v:

I really wish I could do this to maybe find a Core 2 Duo machine. But alas, our recycling center doesn't allow people to pick up computer stuff.

Ask them how much it cost instead. Most recycling center are willing to let you take things away for a couple of bucks depending on the weight, dimension, etc.
The one I worked for wouldn't sell you anything unless you bid on it in a silent auction, and you couldn't bid on anything without a business license, and going through a couple audits.
They just gave shit away to...certain employees on a short list.

You say that, but I don't believe it. You seem to seem to work hard to not upgrade. If that was the problem I'd have mailed you old parts I have. I've mailed videos cards and ram to people before because I can't even sell them. I don't think you look hard enough, of that's just the story you tell people.
Hell, if you needed something, we threw away stuff at my job everyday. Laptops, Desktops, drives, video cards. Most still working.

Well, our recycling center is more of a "hazardous waste" center, so they accept a wide variety of things. They have also held a strict no-exceptions policy traditionally. First time I went there I asked and they said "absolutely not".
But I saw on their website that they are testing out a program to allow people to take used televisions and computer monitors. I have more monitors than I need at the moment but hey who knows, they may allow people to take computers eventually, minus the HDD's I imagine.
I should look for one near me.

Does your state not have an E-Waste program?
Thought maybe some of you still rocking a socket 775 board might be interested in this. My new CPU arrived, an upgrade from my Q6600 - a Xeon X5460.

Just add the little magic bit...

Put the cheap 771 Xeon in a 775 motherboard...

Its South Dakota so probably not.
Entire document on E-waste by the SD DENR.
http://denr.sd.gov/des/wm/hw/documents/E-WasteManagement_000.pdf (its a whole page).
Proper disposal and recycling of electronics is only required by commercial properties. Its only "encouraged" when it comes to individuals. Our hazardous waste facility only accepts electronics because of a city ordinance prohibiting electronics from going to the landfill.

Doesn't help me - my desktop's still rocking dual LGA 771. I'm undecided whether I want to just upgrade the CPUs ($100 can get me to 8-core 3GHz), or do a whole new build using whatever's reusable (just my GPU and storage, really - not even the case/PSU can be reused).
Try a local University surplus, if you can find them. The University of Utah has a whole surplus building where you can buy their outdated equipment for cheap, 80 bucks starting for a core two duo machine sans hard drive. The prices go down the longer it's there too, so if you're willing to risk it, I once bought an old junk machine for $12.

Wow, I sorta feel like doing that now, it'd save me from upgrading even longer :v:
Oh, I found my issue.
You CAN build a RAID 5 volume with three disks but really everything expects that you have at least three drives and a hot spare which I don't have the room for. Nothing complained about this but it gimps everything. I'll just have to deal with RAID 1E. Not like I'm dealing with massive 50gb files anyways.

Tried looking, there's just not a whole lot out here. However, I did find that the city does a surplus auction every year though. And they had tons of printers (might be worth getting a network capable laser printer), computers and monitors. Also had loads of Crown Vics, although that's a bit out of my price range. :v: Might be worth looking into, however that's not until about August/September.

I realize I'm probably completely out of favors at this point, but have you got a spare laptop with working USB ports that could run Facebook (and possibly World of Warcraft on mid-low?) Mom's has been shitting the bed something fierce recently.

You'll want to check that your motherboard is compatible, some require a modded BIOS flash. You'll also need to cut out the alignment notches in the CPU socket but that's fairly easy and will still let you revert back to a 775 if you need to. A typical overclock on these is about 3.8Ghz or higher - one guy on OCN pushed his to 4.8Ghz.

I left that job in April, or I'd help out.
I got 4 GX280's on my shelf all with 4GB ram, and windows 7. I just loaded them with all our spare parts and asked to take them home since we were throwing them away.
Edit: But I sometimes come across old hardware, I'll keep you in mind if I find something.

That's already more than I was expecting to get, thank you :v:
dicking about with linux nvidia drivers
so I have to disable EDID to get my bigass center monitor to work because it is one of those korean panels
but disabling EDID makes my side monitors have a resolution of 800x600
and reenabling EDID makes my center monitor derp the fuck out
hmmm
You can disable EDID for specific monitors, though you have to edit the xconfig yourself.
