Determined I'm gonna need to pick up a second monitor... Guess I'm hitting up pawn shops this Friday. Dual 23's is the goal.
I wish I could literally just block certain channels from my Youtube feed. Like PDP, SkydoesMinecraft, RWJ, etc

It's really entertaining to read some peoples Job applications for IT.
Especially when you call them back to get further informations.
Some claim to know programming, but when you call them and ask them for informations such as "What languages have you written your programs in?" and the person on the other line has to think a few minutes, you know something is not right.
Oh and I actually had the occasional guy answering the above language with "English".

I've written programs in english.
It was a theatre program.
cool
so our dedicated server is getting ddosed, and our provider nullrouted our ip. we open a ticket, ask for some logs, and we basically get told to deal with the ddos on our own, and they don't have any logs.
well genius how the fuck do you expect us to do that when you've nullrouted our ip, huh?
And this is when you switch hosts.
And this is when you switch hosts.
This is actually a pretty common for server providers, even for very fancy providers.

Do you not have a KVM switch? Or a fallback connection?
The nullrouting doesn't last forever either, it normally only lasts as long as the ddos does.

for some reason ipmi doesn't come preinstalled, and we didn't install it either.
also they apparently got mad at us and closed the ticket without a reply.

I just realized every management fad is purposefully designed to be inefficient so large companies that follow management fads have to hire more managers.
Yeah, yeah I know - crosspost from the TW megathread, but you guys might be a bit more resourceful with this kind of stuff, and I suppose some of you might play Medieval II: Total War anyway:
So this Medieval II: Total War issue is driving me crazy - it simply refuses to start. No black screen, no nothing. The thing is, the setup process never seemed to run (it didn't run DXsetup the first time I tried to launch the game from Steam), and I suppose this might be a problem. In the installscript.vdf is references some registry keys that I simply lack - would any be so kind as to check out whether they have these keys?
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\SEGA\\Medieval II Total War\\1.00.0000"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\SEGA\\Medieval II Total War\\1.02.000"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\SEGA\\Medieval II Total War\\1.02.001"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\SEGA\\Medieval II Total War\\1.03.000"
By changing the keys "DXSetup" and "Installed" in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Valve\\Steam\\Apps\\4700" to "0" Steam seemingly started the installation you normally get, and it ran the DXSetup. That changed the "DXSetup" key to "1", but the "Installed" key remained at "0", which tells me that it didn't install properly.
Also, do any of you guys have the subfolder "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\SEGA\"? I don't, but it seems like I should.
Also, M2:TW got an update 12 days ago, if this is any indication: http://steamdb.info/app/4700/
I suppose this could be linked, but I don't know if Steam has any options for rolling back updates.
I've tried reinstalling at least 3 times (in the normal Steam directory, and the alternative), and I've validated the game files to no end - nothing seems to work (and Google isn't helping), so I'm beginning to look for pretty far fetched stuff. Thing is, this started very recently a few months after I installed 8.1.
Would really appreciate it if anyone of you could do anything.
My CEO sure knows how to make a new job tempting.
My contract at my workplace runs out on August, and I am considering going to another Software firm, as a real Developer, since I am currently a "Developer", but do 99% Sysadmin work.
I don't really dislike Sysadmin work, because it's also fun as hell, but I'd rather be a programmer.
And now, the CEO is offering me to stay here for 1-2 Years. He's currently offering me Leading the project in which we replace the complete IT Server infrastructure.
Holy shit I can't decide. Programming would be cool, but Being a Project lead replacing the Server infrastrucure of a whole company is fucking rad and would be amazing on my resume.
And I wouldn't have to get off my lazy ass and search a new job.
Damn this is tempting...

While you don't write the actual programs in English, if you can't articulate, you can't be a good developer period. Being able to write code is nowhere near as important as having the ability to explain what you did technically in a way that someone who isn't a developer can understand.

At the current stage, we are looking for a person who actually has programmed before. If he has the ability to make his code readable, and document it well enough to be understandable even for non-programmers, does currently not matter.
Step 1 is finding a person who has knowledge about programming. How much he knows does not really matter at this point.
Step 2 is finding out what he knows about programming and special traits that are needed when programming (Commenting, documenting, etc...). For this, the person we deemed applicable will be invited, and will solve some mathematical problems with a language of their choice. If they have problems in doing so, we will provide guidance as necessary, and of course an interview.
Step 3 is sitting together as a team, and discuss which person seems to be the best for the job. Here we look at the following (Not nearly everything, just a small part):
* How did he progress while solving the problem(s)?
* Did he need guidance? if so, where?
* What resources did he use to solve the problems?
* How does the final product look and work?
We also look, if a person does write comments, and if those comments would be useful for a person reading the code.
Of course, this is a very simple version of the evaluation process. In reality we have so many factors indicating if a person is suited for the job. I don't fucking care if you have knowledge about X. If you are willing to learn, anything is possible. But of course, finding out if a person is willing to learn is not an easy task.
Seems similar to what we do. We let recruiters throw potential developers at us, we discern if they actually know anything about coding (writing "MS Sequel" on your resume is all too common) and vet them on the phone. If they pass the "Is your resume fabricated bullshit" and "Do you have actual code knowledge" we interview them in person and basically do a problem solving test. FizzBuzz, string reversal, et cetera just to get an idea of how they think.
Considering though that we have a lot of senior developers, the overhead for guidance isn't extreme.
Also, talking about possible applicants.
We got a job application as a programmer from a person who is deaf.
And she looks cute as hell.
Since she wrote that she wrote some PHP and did some webdesign (Also sent us some of her work),
So we are gonna invite her over.
This is gonna be fun, since we never had to work with a person who is deaf.
But seriously, That must be hard to live with.

i can only think of that doujin with a deaf girl
Don't hire her, you need to be able to hear the whispers of a computer's soul to program effectively.
Being physically deaf just makes you that much more receptive to the Machine Spirits.
