How risky is putting a monitor on top of a Mac mini?
Very? I wouldn't risk it.
How risky is putting a monitor on top of a Mac mini?
why not just velcro it to the back or something
How risky is putting a monitor on top of a Mac mini?
Depends on the monitor - my 27" beast would probably fall off it too easily to risk, but a small 21-23" display should be fine, as long as it's not a CRT or something.
It's uncomfortable for me to lift my left finger to right click, and also TF2 and Gmod
I've never had to lift any fingers like you do...
Although if you press close enough to the middle, you could activate both mouse buttons. Rarely happens with me tho.
Very? I wouldn't risk it.
Why would it be? The cooling solution is on the bottom and you can just fasten the monitor and mac down with some double-sided mounting tape.

Nah I'm thinking in terms of fuckin breaking the damn thing.
I really love google drive. It's a godsend because when writing scripts or reviews or whatever, going from a phone to computer or other computer at any goven time is pretty awesome.
Their document editor is really nice and I can work with other people on the same document at the same time and chat with them while editing. Works on mobile too.
Nah I'm thinking in terms of fuckin breaking the damn thing.
Well its not like the mini is made out of plastic or glass, and provided the monitor isn't that ridiculous 100lb Sony CRT it probably could be fine

i feel like selling a bulk of my computer setup and buying a really high end rMBP. help
i feel like selling a bulk of my computer setup and buying a really high end rMBP. help
Hello, I'm Dr. Nove, this is Mac Purchasing therapy.
Now, first of all, what do you think the benefits of an rMBP would be?
everything :(
[editline]16th March 2014[/editline]
i go to lans a lot and desktops fucking suck for that. my current rmbp makes things so much easier but it's just a touch too weak for some things
What specifically? Why would you go to LANs with a Mac? Are you planning on installig windows?
i play source games, and i already dualboot windows. i don't use it for anything but osu!
[editline]16th March 2014[/editline]
small, light laptops with a huge battery life just simplify things. it's all so much more streamlined than lugging around a huge atx tower and a monitor
Bad news, my M1530 finally gave up the will to live today after 7 long years of service, the Fn+Power check says it's a duff system board / CPU (apparently a common fault on the 1530, the 8600GT heatcycled like a bitch and fucked up solder joints), so now I'm stuck without a laptop :(
I am damn tempted to grab a Surface Pro 2 (£600 on ebay ooh), or a Thinkpad (but I have no idea what the fuck the models are), wanna spend less than £700 really and I want something beefy

What are you thinking about selling for the rMBP?
A relative just asked me if this $2500 prebuilt was good. I said no.
Then he called me again. "So, I asked a friend, this is a Core Pentoum with 8 Gigas of memory. Are you sure it's not good? It even has FIVE HUNDRED GIGABYTES OF SPACE, I could really use that space!"
I then patiently explained to him why that was a very bad idea. For almost half an hour. "k, got it"
And a while later he called me again." Ok, so, my friend is really good at computers, I think he's a hacker or something, and he vouched for that computer, so I bought it. Now, the guy said for $50 he would add a memory card reader, and since I hate having to plug he camera into the PC I went for it. But I don't know where it goes, all the holes are really big!"
Honestly, when a relative needs a simple computer, I tell them to go buy a prebuilt or something. Why? While it's true that they could save a considerable chunk of money with a prebuilt, it's also true that my relatives aren't necessarily very computer savvy. What happens if I build them a computer and then something goes wrong? I'm gonna be on call as their tech support, and I'm just one guy who doesn't have the experience neccesary to fix everything. And these people's jobs rely on having a working computer. If they get a prebuilt, they also get access to dedicated customer support as it's included with the sticker price. It takes a lot of pressure off of everybody involved.
If someone wanted to spend $2500 on a gaming computer, though? I would tell them to build because it's kinda important they know the anatomy of a computer and what each part does, and actually building the thing would provide a perfect educational experience for that. And also they're gonna save hundreds of dollars.
current one, old desktop, old nas, spare parts and some misc stuff. i just feel like doing a bit of a clearout of anything i don't really need
current one, old desktop, old nas, spare parts and some misc stuff. i just feel like doing a bit of a clearout of anything i don't really need
Is the money going toward the setup in general (external monitor, stand, keyboard and mouse, other stuff you might need) or just the laptop?
laptop, probably a monitor. i already recently refreshed my peripherals recently
i think i'll go for it when the macbooks get refreshed hopefully around october.

I'd say go for it. It sounds like you're doing a lot of drmandding work that requires os x and the ability to move around a lot, and the rMBP is good for that.

Too bad the promo isn't permanent.
Sometimes I feel like replacing my desktop with a laptop but there's nothing remotely close to 780 performance in a remotely slim laptop chassis. Still a few years to wait for that yet.
ugh, i don't want to wait till tuesday to get a bank account for paypal. i really need to sell this 660 ti so i can upgrade to a 780 :(

the only games i like regularly play are css/csgo and osu! so i care far more about processor speed for video/photo stuff
intel graphics are coming along though, maybe in the future they'll give nvidia a run for their money when it comes to performance
not that they haven't in the midrange mobile cards, because Iris blows lower end nvidia GPU's out of the water with that insanely low power usage

So you don't already have a bank account?

No matter what payment service you use, you still need a bank account to withdraw the funds.
So you don't already have a bank account?
I've been using my moms, and she doesn't want me to use it anymore.

WWell if you're getting a high end rMBP you'll probably end up with a decent enough gpu with Intel iris graphics.
Which one is better, hd4000 or iris pro?

iris/iris pro is far better than the hd4xxx series
also the high end rmbps have nvidia gpus

Remember to get the one with the Nvidia gpu and then upgrade any parts.
Apparently if you upgrade the slightly lower tier to the same specs as the higher tier model that has the Nvidia graphics, it would cost the same minus the gpu. At least that's what happens on the website.
