My dad was doing some logo work for a friend in town and he downloaded some fonts from dafont.com (a generally great site for fonts)
However, he was silly enough to let the website download an installer, and he ignored the installation process, simply clicking next until the installation was done. Little did he know that he was agreeing to add even more installers and crapware onto his computer.
He called me downstairs since he couldn't watch more than ten seconds of a YouTube video without it stopping to buffer, and every few times he'd click in a webpage a blank one would open up. He said he updated Java and it didn't help any.
I did the usual shredding of all the recent downloads and caches and cleared all of his temp files, but the problem persisted.
It turned out that the blank webpage was supposed to be filled with ads, but my dad didn't realize that since he had adblock on. I did a little snooping and googling over the URLs and figured out that the pop-up was coming from one of those adware programs that puts "shopping" hyperlinks into plain web text. I found a few instructional pages on how to be rid of it, and after skimming past the step I'd already taken, I downloaded some French malware detection program and let it do its stuff. The files it found were all in the registry, and my dad recognized the names of every single one of them. The program cleared the adware and rebooted the PC.
When it booted back up, there was a simple BIOS message that read "Operation system not found." I got worried that downloading the French program wasn't the smartest idea and that it could've been one of those viruses that doesn't fuck anything up until you reboot. However, rebooting a second time got the computer running just fine. Youtube videos loaded properly and there were no more pop-ups.
tl;dr: My dad made me spend an hour and a half troubleshooting problems he could've prevented by reading about what he was fucking downloading.

I switched out my 450 watt psu for my old 650 watt one, which has never had a history of buzzing, and now it is doing it after i switched. wtf?
