I don't really understand the race for (package) miniaturization, but isn't the size of the connectors on the bottom of the PS3/x360 chips roughly the same as the ones on, say, an LGA Intel CPU?

The thing with pumping mechanisms is that each pump cycle makes future floods more likely because you're essentially building paths for the water by pumping it off, this is why you make your cellar waterproof and anchor it rather than an always-on solution.
