If I were going to college I would put a BIOS password on my own machine right from the beginning, as well as enable PW on wake and setting a very short sleep timer.
if I had gone to college, I would have just bolted my laptop to a table, done a full disk encryption and a BIOS password

I used truecrypt on my laptop, by enabling csm and then just install Windows 8 as usual (non-UEFI) and use truecrypt to FDE the harddisk like normal.

Heh my friends do that sometimes. Stuff includes taking apart your phone (taking the battery out, Sim card), your laptop (take out battery, if you're really out they just take apart the whole thing and lay it on your table, or take out your ram, hard drive) but nothing too major like fucking with your laptop while it's updating or breaking much things.

put the laptop in a case with a lock
then handcuff the case to yourself
also kensington lock the laptop to the case
truecrypt the laptop
do not use usb dongles
do not use a detachable battery
override powerbutton settings to prevent restarting
have a decoy laptop at hand (preferably an old thinkpad; also can be used as a weapon or a shield)

Get a small Linux box set up, and you can use [URL="http://www.tcpdump.org/manpages/tcpdump.1.html"]tcpdump[/URL] to capture the traffic, then read the files it spits out in Wireshark. It supports segmenting files by size and time, so it shouldn't be too resource heavy (besides disk space).

If your laptop has bluetooth, you can set things up so that it locks when your phone is not in range.
Takes a couple tools to do, but it's a nice thing to have for the absent minded folks.

I think all newer asus boards have it. Mine does that if i pull the power lead/flip the main power switch while it's still running.

I'd much rather have it trigger once a week and be false than it not triggering and my entire computer gets fried.
So, I'm actually doing some research right now regarding my current PSU and found someone on an amazon review saying that both 12V rails combined can deliver a maximum of about 280W, with the whole PSU being rated at 550W, while my GTX770's TDP is 230W.
That combined with the fact that the thing has seen better days and the summer coming down hard here in Germany I can see why it could crash when firing up some GPU-heavy tasks.
While shopping for a new one I found the Corsair VS650, which has everything I need for a pretty low price. Thoughts?

I had the exact same problem with mine, but my computer was new. disable the ASUS anti-surge in the bios, it tends to be rather trigger happy for no reason
