If you have a Google Account at all, whether it's Gmail, Youtube or Android it takes one click to join a hangout.
IRC requires you to download a whole new program/browser extension, find a server and create a channel.

I suppose so, but once its all setup I can set the channel to launch at startup of the client and also I can start searching for other channels that may also interest me (I consider IRC to be the Reddit of the chatroom world). I've found some pretty interesting channels on networking and System Administration personally.
