that is still the (only?) way to get tv broadcasts over here
never seen anything else than antenna cables on tv's
Well its still standard for receiving terrestrial TV, as I said before Cable and Satellite have switched over to F connectors.

One of these ancient beasts.
They gave us a new HD capable one for the same rate we were paying for that old one. And no extra cost for HD versions of all the SD channels. Doesn't have clock on the front though, which sucks.
Why are cable boxes so common in the US anyway? Here in Denmark, cable boxes are pretty rare. We just plug our TV directly into the apartment RF connector, and all channels are digital (Most are HD) and most channels are also available in analog, for old TVs.
Because we need half a billion channels for selling knives and sports we didn't know were still played.

I still got cable boxes, but they are in the shape of a plugin module.for the TV. Its for some channels you have to pay for, but my old ass CRT TV still get some channels straight out of the wall

Well, that card is more like a code card I think, for encrypted channels.
The way we have it is that we paid for a package and then we just have access to them in the wall, no code card or shit required.

My parents live outside of cable providers so they get terrestrial, where you need said card for paid channels.
But yeah where I live it's magic that spurts out of the RF connector too

Us 'mericans don't get time off work, so we have to DVR our precious reality tv shows
Us 'mericans don't get time off work, so we have to DVR our precious reality tv shows
Tivo just got released here, and it seems incredibly useless (also it works like 60 % of the time it seems to me)
Us 'mericans don't get time off work, so we have to DVR our precious reality tv shows
Nah, that's not it. Not all cable boxes have DVRs, and dedicated DVRs exist as well.
Actually, DVRs are pretty obsolete these days anyway. Most newer TVs can record digital programmes if you connect a hard drive to it.
Since I have Rogers Cable, I get Rogers Anytime TV which lets me watch stuff on the go on computer, phone or tablet. Unfortunately it's pretty shit sometimes. The app for it is pretty shit. But when it does work, it works alright.
I don't we even get cable out here. We use satellite ever since this house existed.
I don't remember why you hate them.
Someone want to give me a refresher?
Bought a laptop, not a low-end one either ($1500). It was an IV-B launch product, and since IV-B was delayed it took a few months more to get it than I expected. Not Asus's fault but something to be mad about in general. Once they finally released it, the only site that stocked it was some sketchy unknown (hid-evolution.com, iirc).
It took over a week to ship because they decided to truck it across the entire United States. (For you Europeans, that's equivalent to trucking it from Paris, to Moscow... and back).
It died after literally three hours - complete motherboard failure, wouldn't even power on.
Shipped it back. Took six weeks to repair - the merchant refused to give me a refund so I could buy another one elsewhere, and Asus refused to just ship me a new one instead of repairing the current one. It's not like I had any data I wanted to save off the hard drive.
It took another week to ship back to me, once again by truck. Guess they didn't learn their lesson the first time (long-range shipping by truck is a good way to break things - I suspect that may have been the root cause of the failure).
When I finally got it back, they had forgotten half of the power cord. Which fortunately is just a standard PC power cable which I have plenty of, but still, how the fuck does that even happen?
In the two years of use I've gotten out of it, I've realized it's actually not even a great laptop to begin with. No 5GHz Wifi, despite having some massive fans it has mediocre cooling, and the structural design is broken (it's all-plastic despite weighing nine pounds - it flexes visibly).
I'm actually thinking about starting to pronounce it "ASS-us", to emphasize that they can KISS MY ASS.
I don't care that most of their products are probably decent or even good, I will hate them until the end of time, or until everyone else pisses me off just as much.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks they're hot garbage.
My Asus experience?
2 out of 3 motherboards had to be RMA'd, one of them three times. One graphics card had to be RMA'd. My monitor came with dead pixels. I had one tablet that was splitting apart at the seams when I bought it, and it was also completely broken functionally. The disk drive in my Asus laptop stopped working after 3 months. My T100 developed a stuck pixel in a month and gets phantom touches sometimes.
Fucking garbage company.
[editline]24th June 2014[/editline]
Oh lol and now this

Fucking bravo, Asus.
My experience with Asus is a TF201 tablet
First one I got wouldn't connect with the keyboard, dock connector was fucked
Next one I got worked okay, then after 2 or 3 months the charge connector was covered in that green corrosion caused by leaking batteries, so it takes about 20 attempts to make the charger work and bumping it will stop it (Also uses a propietary connector and charges at 15v so good luck getting a replacement if it breaks, they're $50 each), friend has the same problem on his Win8 Pro Asus tablet
The screen has a random white spot, the back scratches ridiculously easy, official support was abandoned really fast (Got a grand total of 1 android update), the GPS doesn't work at all (They put the antennas BEHIND A METAL FUCKING PLATE) and the case has actually started separating in one spot
I haven't touched it since I got my Nexus 5, it's practically useless now
Gonna see if I can get it replaced under warranty and sell the fucking thing

Because cable companies encrypt all channels generally. So the box is to decrypt it. Secondly, they have to include a shitty guide in 320x240 for your HD channels. Thirdly, it's so you can have something to pay for every month.
My only exposure to tablets was a Thinkpad 730TE.

I have never touched an iPad. Seriously.
Edited: Oh, and the TransNote if that can be called a tablet.

I've used OS X for less than 5 minutes total, and an iPad for less than 30.
The OS X usage was only because I had to remove a password from a Macbook, and I went "I know this, it's a UNIX system", booted it into single-user mode, remounted / as rw and changed the password.
Secondly, they have to include a shitty guide in 320x240 for your HD channels.
Most of the US cable boxes I've seen look like they are running software from the 90's
cable boxes were designed in 1908 by a cabal of blind monks refusing the advances of technology and choosing to base design on a number of leaves found drying near the entrance to the cave in which they passed their entire lives
they have not changed since
If the TransNote still existed, I would have bought it with an i5, touchscreen running Windows 8 Pro with Office 365.
I wouldn't be able to use it sadly, my writing hand would be leaning on the laptop :v:
So I found a spare SSD and plugged it into my PC. Time to do a dualboot.
So my internet's down. Tried calling the ISP tech support, and it's busy. Like, not "your call is very important to us" busy, it's just the busy signal.

i like how they just changed the message instead of fixing it completely
Just got through to a nice prerecorded message stating that due to some accident there is an increased amount of callers, and if my issue does not involve internet not working then I should stay on the line.
WELL GEE I WONDER WHY PEOPLE WOULD CALL TECH SUPPORT IN THE FIRST PLACE
So my internet's down. Tried calling the ISP tech support, and it's busy. Like, not "your call is very important to us" busy, it's just the busy signal.
Do you at least get corny music to listen to while waiting?
Do you at least get corny music to listen to while waiting?
they were so busy their call system thing could not handle calls
shit is fucked
i see reports of internet down flying onto their russian facebook clone page at least

It's weird how different OEMs handle with different people. The two ASUS RoGs my sister and I use are the best laptops we've ever had(coming from a history of Sony Vaios).

I know mine is mostly bad luck, but it's frustrating. I'm contemplating selling my T100 and getting one of those new Samsung tablets. I actually like TouchWiz and my phone/Gear are treating me well.

I had to listen to One Direction whilst on hold to EE so I could get my phone contract ended next month.
