It's weird how different OEMs handle with different people. The two ASUS RoGs my sister and I use are the best laptops we've ever had(coming from a history of Sony Vaios).
I bought a few RoG laptops and they were pretty damn mediocre or bad. The earlier G53 / 73 series had a design flaw where the DC plug pin would break off and ASUS was very spotty with warranty coverage, meaning you were screwed out of several hundred dollars because of a well-documented design flaw if you were out of warranty or had to make multiple returns. Also, the G50V series had a design flaw of having a cover over the fan which looked like a subwoofer but actually just impeded airflow to the point that drilling it out reduced temps greatly.
Internet has been down for just 4 hours and i already used up half of my phone's data
\o/ My rural ass town just got fiber optics! 70 down 17 up on the way :D
\o/ My rural ass town just got fiber optics! 70 down 17 up on the way :D
My town has Fibre Optic cable, convincing my Dad to get it is another matter entirely.
I could get VDSL+ or whatever (25/10) instead of our current line (12/1) but I haven't bitched that in yet. no fiber in houses though, only in apartments
My town has comcast and slow as shit DSL

I think they are starting to offer better connection that replaces the last mile with Fibre however this is quite costly.
My town has comcast and slow as shit DSL
- Every person who lives in the USA
- Every person who lives in the USA
- Except me. (TDS Telecom)
My town has Fibre Optic cable, convincing my Dad to get it is another matter entirely.
It's the same price for it as your regular package. Cheaper in our case since we're dropping any time calls.
- Every person who lives in the USA
Canada says hi
Same thing here. I was paying $99 for ADSL. But since I've moved to VDSL im now paying $119. Fibre is the exact price as ADSL for 30/10, 100/50 is $129.
I want it for the upload to be honest, 20 down is enough, 1 up isn't.
Why are cable boxes so common in the US anyway? Here in Denmark, cable boxes are pretty rare. We just plug our TV directly into the apartment RF connector, and all channels are digital (Most are HD) and most channels are also available in analog, for old TVs.
Its for higher channel packages. Basic digital cable you can usually receive with any ClearQAM capable TV (which is pretty much any TV after 2008). However, for more channels, the cable box has a unique MAC attached to your subscription which tells it which channels to decrypt and allow access to. Any TVs in the house not on the cable box will still get basic cable though. As for analog cable, that's up to the provider. Ours discontinued most analog channels (except for a few local ones) for bandwidth reasons, especially internet, as they are horribly inefficient. I know some others have removed analog cable altogether.
we have freeview in the uk which lets you watch the more popular channels like bbc and channel 4/5 the main subscription box is sky, and it's frankly pretty fucking shit.
Most of the US cable boxes I've seen look like they are running software from the 90's
Can confirm. Ours looks like this: Actual resolution, even at 1080i. The difference when I upgraded from the old box to the new one? You can see the video in the corner in the guide, remedial widescreen support, an "HD" option and renders significantly faster. Run the exact same software otherwise :v: In all honesty, I don't think its changed since 2006, and before that, it was even more gaudy believe it or not.
if i moved in to a house that had no RF connector or tv aerial i wouldn't really care. watching tv on tv is for scrubs
I keep trying to convince my roommates to ditch the cable TV and just pay for Internet and Phone, but they won't listen. The only time the cable box is ever used is when everyone's stoned :v:
This is the last time i buy something from ASUS. First Motherboard, gigabit wont work at all, only 10 mbit. Then this R9 290 from asus with that shitty Direct Cu ii cooler. I mean look at this: Gonna have to RMA this shit.
Can confirm. Ours looks like this: Actual resolution, even at 1080i. To say the least, it would work then suddenly toss it's shit. Sooner or later, they fixed it up.
watching tv on tv is for scrubs
More often than not though, TV is better quality than internet video.
The AM2 Asus board has been rock solid for the past 2 years I've used it for a server. Only quirk it has is that it only displays the chipset temp at boot, but never updates until you reboot. It runs at ~85F anyway though so I don't care.
~85F sounds way too low or I've gotten myself too used with laptop temperatures.
The CPU is more around 95-105F right now, but that's because I closed the closet door and our A/C fan is broken. And it is running two VMs.
Are you sure it's measuring F and not C? Because I'm damn surprised.
Its an Athlon II X4. It doesn't run very hot even under load, which is pretty good for a 95 watt CPU with the stock heatsink. The 123.6 F is the bugged one. I have no idea what its actually running at since it hasn't budged.

I accomplished two things today: - I opened up to TrafficMan a little bit, made him feel violated - I made progress on my Firefox branding now I just need to figure out where that "Nightly" is coming from (and figure out why the fuck it's segfaulting on Linux) and it might be legally distributable!
I needed to move my modem and router to the basement, so I thought I'd hook it up to the coax cable where the unused Eastlink phone box sits. Though annoyingly, it seems like they disconnected that run at the demarcation box. Now I have to call them and hope they'll actually be able to come out and connect it without charging a stupid amount of money.
