What monitor is that? Looks exactly like my VE258Q.
I'll look into it when I get to work if I remember.
let me introduce you to the magic of windows dpi scaling [t]http://www.surfaceforums.net/forum/attachments/microsoft-surface-pro-2/1347d1385875579-surface-pro-2-chrome-screenshot-12-.png[/t][t]http://community.spotify.com/spotify/attachments/spotify/001/82301/1/blurify.jpg[/t][t]http://core0.staticworld.net/images/article/2013/02/big-picture-mode-100026453-orig.png[/t]
that looks absolutely terrible on a big monitor
[t]http://puu.sh/9Kki3/1331158daa.png[/t] I have no idea what I'm doing! Background: I'm a Comp. Eng. at an intern where they want me to help them setup a few servers. I'm not an IT guy, so I'm experimenting with some VMs first. Got to get more RAM...
Hey, you don't need that much ram to use the servers. Roughly 2GB will work fine. [editline]25th June 2014[/editline] Mine was running at 1.25GB due to lack of RAM on my machine at work and it dealt with decently well.
Hey, you don't need that much ram to use the servers. Roughly 2GB will work fine.
I'm going to be attempting to virtualize a fileserver, the windows server (in the screenshot), Mac OS X (and/or) windows 7 to test compatibility between a few server programs before buying physical hardware to run them. Running 3 OS on top of Win 7 needs more RAM.
Ever since SB or so the Pentiums have been pretty reasonable budget choices, actually.
I've just seen these holy shit the latest Pentium line up is actually decent. Rate me clocks for days as well for not even noticing this.
Not clocks. The Pentium in that benchmark is the new unlocked Pentium that isn't even out yet.
Compared to an atom? Probably smooth as butter.
That might actually convince me to do a budget file server with a pentium instead of a atom. I wonder how freenas would perform
That unlocked pentium when it comes out would be a great choice. It can apparently hit 4.6 ghz on stock cooling. Also ASUS is releasing a bios update on H81, B85, H87, and H97 to allow overclocking apparently...
good luck getting the anniversary pentium, i hear it's going to be sold pretty quickly. best to preorder it
Mergggeeee [editline]25th June 2014[/editline] God damnit
just bought a 4k monitor on monday i shall transcend from master race to god race
what one?
asus pb287q
just bought a 4k monitor on monday i shall transcend from master race to god race
RIP framerate 2009-2014
Just got done with that livestream chatroom thingy. Only about 6 people in there, but it was great. I talked about gaemz I played and being zero delay it was great for conversations.
asus pb287q
ehhhhhhh [editline]26th June 2014[/editline] i'm not seeing the point in buying an asus 4k tn panel at this stage of the game. spend a little more for an IPS offering from dell (or possibly less, i don't know US prices) or get an amazing 1440p monitor

My tablet has a higher DPI. I use 0 DPI scaling, why would I waste any of that desktop real-estate at all? It makes no sense to me.
Everyone keeps saying this. I don't understand it. My tablet has a higher DPI. I use 0 DPI scaling, why would I waste any of that desktop real-estate at all? It makes no sense to me.
Because you're not wasting desktop real estate under OS X. The actual desktop space when running at the highest scaled mode is 6016x3384 and that gets scaled down to the panel. Even in the 2x scaling mode any parts of applications that need to address 1x1 can do so, like the video frame in a movie editor or the canvas in Photoshop. It's not like Windows where everything is stuck at the same scaling value. Anyone who uses a 4K monitor at native res on OS X doesn't understand how scaling works on it. Honestly anyone who runs a HiDPI at native res is actually getting a worse experience for display real estate on OS X than they would at the highest scaled mode. This is grabbed from the framebuffer on a Mac Pro running a Dell UP3214Q at the highest scaling mode, but not native res. You actually end up fitting more than you would just running at 3840x2160 because offscreen it's rendering everything 2x in both dimensions. I don't think anyone can comprehend how massive this image is. It's a 20MP desktop. [img_thumb]http://images.anandtech.com/doci/8023/hugedesktop.jpg[/img_thumb]

That part sucks, not an issue with a mouse, though.
Because you're not wasting desktop real estate under OS X. I don't use OS X, nor was I referring to it (Sorry about that). I mean Windows, OS X's scaling is great and I would use it if I could. But I can't, so I'll clear up my statement; I'll never understand why people DPI scaling under windows for high DPI displays.

I don't understand why you would buy a HiDPI display and use it on Windows unless you knew you could use it at native res properly. From my experiences with the SP3 and Razer Blade units the scaling is still terrible and there's no backing scale which means you can't benefit from both sharper UI elements and large screen real estate. Microsoft is honestly doomed to forever have a bad implementation of DPI scaling because if they had a solution it would have arrived in the two years they've had to do it. Variance in screen sizes and resolutions just makes handling it impossible, and Windows software devs don't care about following guidelines or updating applications. Microsoft's own SQL server 2014 application doesn't even work properly on scaled HiDPI so who can really blame Windows app developers for not caring either.
because some people don't have vision as good as you :x @wingless

I don't know why you would buy something like a 4K display unless you could use it at native because the alternative doesn't work properly. I agree with you that the only solution for Windows is to run at native res both for reasons of shitty scaling and the fact that Microsoft has no way to give good real estate and sharper assets at the same time.
I'd go with this over a 4k personally.

Double misunderstanding I guess. Either way, I'm turned off of 4k until we get good quality for good price. My T221's were the biggest turn-offs for 4k. They're absolutely fantastic displays, love them to death. Except they're the biggest pain in the arse to actually run. Never, ever, ever, ever buy a T221 unless it's a DG5 or DGP. They're pure fucking evil otherwise.
