To me, 21:9 feels like computing through a door's letter slot.
Why it's not 3840x1600 blows my mind. 2.4:1 which is both 1600 pixels high and 3840 wide is killing me.
Edit: shut up with factory processes are easier.
I'm gonna be honest. A 700$ won't really be able to play Arma 3 anywhere near playable levels.
Maybe if you turn everything down and even reduce the render resolution, which in turn makes arma 3 looks so bad it's not worth it.
He says even $800 is alright. He wants a laptop due to college, I mean better specs for a desktop, but you cant bring a desktop around to your classes.
To give laptops credit, the 800M~ series GPUs are actually really good and would likely run ArmA 3 fine - although the cheapest laptops with the 850M-60M are Clevos in the $900s range.
Wonder how hard it would be to find one at $800?

split it down the middle for two close to 5:4 windows?
also, 21:9 is the aspect for most movies :x it's not really meant for most workflows
It's a pretty great monitor but I've always felt that unless you just watch movies you don't gain much by going 21:9 over a 16:9 or 16:10 with the same horizontal resolution but a greater vertical resolution.
Ya know, I actually really like my current 21:9. I really like it for games, and it's nice to comfortably fit 2 VM's on the same screen

5:4 makes me feel sad.
and that's not true, 21:9 is neither 1.85:1 nor 2.40:1 It's kinda a poor inbetween.

the amount of footage getting clipped off is tiny, it's just an easy way to fit in with manufacturing processes i guess. straight up anamorphic would probably be more expensive to produce i assume

Probably. You should post that photo of the 21:9 with your wallpaper again. The real reason for 21:9.
iirc the exact aspect ratio for film varies a fuckton by small amounts. So nothing is really perfect for it.

Although I do have to say that 21:9 is pretty bad for webpages. I usually have chome on either of my side screens which are 4:3 in portrait.
iirc the exact aspect ratio for film varies a fuckton by small amounts. So nothing is really perfect for it.
yeah. can vary from 2.35:1 to 2.40:1
I am however trying to figure out where to fit a 4th monitor/what to use it for. I still have all these screens sitting around the house with no use.
i want a portrait monitor to the left of my 21:9 panel for twitter/email and stuff like that, and reading

it was one of the worst matches i ever played. yeah, we won. but my team was so fucking frustrating. the entire time they used only novas and one of them started yelling at me because i wanted them to go A.

I really feel that a 4:3 monitor in portrait is perfect for webpages. I picked up two older Dell's with rotating/height adjustable/tilting stands for $25 a piece, and they work great. DVI on those two, DP on the 21:9
if i ever get another external monitor it has to be DP or HDMI, sadly. neither of which are found on such cheap monitors :v:

DVI-HDMI cords are cheap

The difference between an $800 lappy and a $900 new one off of xoticpc with a 850M / 860M is so large it isn't funny, but you could alternately find a Y510p on eBay and then shove a second 755M in there later if you don't care about battery life.
Everyone keeps saying this. I don't understand it. My tablet has a higher DPI. I use 0 DPI scaling, why would I waste any of that desktop real-estate at all? It makes no sense to me.
Windows dpi scaling is terrible when you have it plugged into a tv accross the room.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PKZyqs i'll throw this out too incase he's a intel only person
there's nothing wrong with what fen selected either so any of the part picker builds is decent enough
He's honestly open for either. As of now he says he might look into a desktop, and just get a laptop later on. Tried to explain that a laptop won't really be running ARMA 3. Seems odd that my PC isn't hitting 60FPS in the game either, yet GPUs are only working at 70-80%
I guess I could sell him a R9 270x for a decent price too

The lenovo seems decent enough, although I'm not sure if he would buy used.
I should've listened to Amiga OS... I just played 8.3 hours of Rust... Except it was fun. I played it with friends I haven't seen in a while and we all reconnected and are all going to keep playing games from now on as a group.
Someone said a few pages ago that a $700 rig wouldn't be able to run Arma 3 properly?
I'm running it on a GTX460 right now. I don't know what your standards for playability are but apparently they're much higher than mine.
On the other hand I've been thinking of upgrading for a while.

Speaking of which, I'm kinda out of the whole hardware thing again, would this be a decent deal?
Not planning to literally go out today and buy it but just kinda wondering. I might want to upgrade something else at the same time, as well.
Arma 3's performance is really random. During the alpha you'd get better performance by INCREASING your graphics options. On my old PC I could drop everything to absolute shit and only get 2 or 3 frames better than all high
The Scenario you play has a huge effect on performance too. Some have so many useless scripts and extras added that it kills your framerate
I don't mind wider monitors, makes it even more comfortable to look at compared to 16:9. We have 5:4 Dell monitors at college and it gets really hard to focus my eyes on them at times. Probably wouldn't use it for films though as the resolution of 2:39.1 films on Blu-ray is effectively 1920x800. (I don't like upscaling)

How do Surface tablets work without DPI scaling?
There are some programs on Windows that I'd love to use on a tablet PC, but Windows' DPI scaling is atrocious.

chrome has shit scaling but other browsers don't afaik. I know that firefox and IE do it well, not sure about opera.
