It has little to nothing to do with modern tech.
Speaker acoustics are pretty complicated. Size does matter to a degree, but those JVCs probably have thin cabinets, cheap drivers, and uneven frequency response.
No speaker is perfect, but I'm sure the Audioengine speakers will sound better than the JVCs in most conditions.
