I don't blame him. It's a luxury BMW (that he managed to turn the backseat into a trashcan, several times)
Doesn't everyone throw their Tim Hortons trash on the back seat?
i drove for the first time yesterday and was given an 86% by my instructor :) [editline]4th July 2014[/editline] and i only ran one red light!
5Mb/s is blazing fast, you could even stream 720p on youtube with a few tweaks.
Although 5Mb/s isn't terrible internet, pretending it's blazing fast because you can stream 720p on youtube, which is really not too intensive because of their codec that makes everything annoyingly blocky, isn't very fair either.
Doesn't everyone throw their Tim Hortons trash on the back seat?
no, I throw it out whenever I can
Doesn't everyone throw their Tim Hortons trash on the back seat?
why the hell would i do that when there's a trash container in front of the passenger seat
I use my car as more of a wardrobe. I found a suit I forgot I had in it once.

Are Hawaii cards really this crap at idling?
Did the irc channel go down or is my client just a pos
Well shit. Looks like I'm back to square one. A month ago, I ordered a laptop for college only to find out it was defective. After waiting for weeks for the replacement RMA to go through, they change the RMA type to "refund". Oh joy. Back to trying to find a decent laptop for ~$800.
I'm in bloody love with the case I picked for my brother (Bitfenix Merc Alpha), going to order one for myself next week and throw my Zalman so far, so fast, it leaves the atmosphere in less than a minute.

I recommend against trying to game with a laptop in that budget-range, if you want to also carry the laptop around with you, gaming laptops tend to have shit battery life, even when you get one of those hybrid graphics solutions (mostly because they give you a really shit battery, since they're designed to be sitting on a desk).
For 800bux I'd consider getting a tablet instead of a laptop, really. Probably a Windows tablet of sorts.
why the hell would i do that when there's a trash container in front of the passenger seat
Because it's already full of McDonalds wrappers.
happy birthday america!
What was it that you got?
It was an Asus N76VJ. It actually was the perfect little laptop for me, until I had to return it for broken USB ports. It (seemingly) had decent battery life, even though I never actually plan to use it off the charger for very long.

I'm unsure whether to replace the MSi GT640 I have with an N550JV. Would it be worth doing?
So I ordered my first pizza:
You've never ordered pizza before? :o
You've never ordered pizza before? :o
Surprisingly not. [editline]4th July 2014[/editline] Wow, they didn't autograph the box. #boycottpizzahut
ffs nvidia
Speaking of NVidia, Shadowplay is pretty awesome. It has downsides but it's a million times better with every update. I wish it had better audio, the compression is pretty audible. Also, you can only record 60/30FPS regardless of you screen refresh rate.
itunes is so good on os x compared to windows. wow
I wish there was a kickstarted hardware H.264 or VP9 encoder. Like high level stuff.
For streaming, I cheated and put a BMD Decklink recorder card into my rackmounted Nebula VST host :v:
I wish there was a kickstarted hardware H.264 or VP9 encoder. Like high level stuff.
This is relevant to something I've wondered about Shadowplay. Since it uses an encoder on the GPU itself, couldn't you technically use that encoder as a hardware renderer?
Don't they sell shitty USB hardware video encoders? I've never seen anything higher-end that that before.
Yes exactly. shitty ones. I want something that is better than Main 3.1. I want something that can do very fast like 4.1 or 5.1 high profile or something. [editline]4th July 2014[/editline]
This is relevant to something I've wondered about Shadowplay. Since it uses an encoder on the GPU itself, couldn't you technically use that encoder as a hardware renderer?
You can just like with quicksync. But like I said, high level stuff. fixed function stuff tacked on typically sucks complete ass. You need 50mbps to make it just look decent.
expensive gear [editline]4th July 2014[/editline] typically rackmounted things i'm sure. i know matrox has a somewhat popular solution
What kind of gear do digital TV stations use for encoding their streams?
The expensive ones that have multiple fall back just in case one or many of the streams break that can seemlessly switch each line without interuption. For encoding, they use systems that do live rendering that gets sent to the TV broadcaster (i.e. cable TV, satellite TV companies) to whatever the standard format they are using. The majority of content is already pre-rendered for TV broadcast anyways but if it isn't, encoding it wouldn't be an issue. TV stations often use hard drive, flash and tape storage for content. Hard drives are more likely to fail so large TV channels still use tape storage today. They usually have massive libraries of footage and have to easily access them so they get expensive software and computer systems to handle both hard drives and tape storage. Front Porch Digital is an example of a company that has solutions for TV channels. Their customer list includes CBCTV, Discovery, abc, ESPN, NBC and more. Their media asset management software, DIVArchive, is a product the company provides to a variety of TV channels around the world the ability to effectively catalogue, find and access tape media in massive tape libraries for immediate broadcasting. Stuff for live TV is even more expensive, for sports their systems must be able to go back to any cameras feed, playback as a replay and do slow motion or pause whenever with live rendering towards the channel feed. Stuff like FIFA or the Olympics have massive technical budgets because they need them. Some companies are even looking at using Blu-Ray discs for archival use because of the capacity and form factor.
Shame about the USBs but it would have been a good laptop. I'm unsure whether to replace the MSi GT640 I have with an N550JV. Would it be worth doing?
The N550JV is a decent laptop, but you can do much better for the price when it comes to performance by getting a Clevo with an 850 / 860M ("Cosmos II" or similar on this page, and review for the Cosmos II on this page) or splurging the extra on a Lenovo Y50. If you're getting a 15.6" laptop, it's going to be a bit chunky so you might as well make the best of performance for your cash.
