Still, why the fucking x1 at the very top? Put the x16 there. Naturally the video card has ALWAYS taken the top slot.
Something like this:
...is all the average person needs. You can fit three dual width video cards and an x1 accessory or two double width cards, a single width x16 device, PLUS one PCI and one x1 device...OR two triple width cards and an x1 device.
Why have the 1x at the very bottom versus the very top? I would think you'd want to remove all possible obstructions from the fan intake. Which means for a double slot card having two slots between them.
So
1x
16x
1x
4x
16x
1x
or something.
I can't speak for every mobo, but on mine at least I don't think I'd even be able to put a GPU into the top slot if it was an x16 slot. there's just not be enough space from the GPU to the mobo heatsink, which could be the reasoning behind it
On mine is justified because right behind the top PCIe x1 slot is the mSATA slot, and putting a card there would make removing RAM a pain in the ass because it would block the clips (so you HAD to remove the GPU to remove or insert RAM). I remember one AGP motherboard I had would also sit right up against the RAM clips. Also fan reasons like BRT mentioned. So yeah, x1 being at the top is fine.

the x1 goes at the top sometimes so you can have a dual-slot SLI setup and have space for an x1 expansion like an SSD or sound card
[editline]27th July 2014[/editline]
also yes, i wish my motherboard had the x1 at the top and the x16 second top because my GPU actually touches the metal fan clips on my NH-D14. i had to bend the clips inwards so they wouldn't touch
http://files.dongers.net/userscripts/YouTube_Google+_comments_remover.user.js
Made an extremely simple userscript that removes Google+ comments from Youtube videos, the discussion in them isn't even related to the video itself.
Dunno about the URL though, might have to update that.
Another thing. Why is it, when you read in the supported memory speed, that it oftens reads (O.C.) ?
i.e. "1600 MHz, 1333 MHz, 2800 MHz (O.C.) ... "
Does it mean speeds with (O.C.) needs to be overclocked or some shit?
Defaults are typically in the 1600 ballpark. OC means that yes, you need to OC it, but the motherboard will work at those speeds.
It doesn't really matter anyways. You get a bigger performance boost by increasing your processor speed when overclocking, and bumping up your ram can cause problems with higher end processor overclocks. In most cases do the processor first, and if you can keep it stable bumping the ram up a few ticks, go for it.
So if i bought a stick or two of 2800 Mhz ram, the motherboard would be compatible, without any special trickery?
[editline]27th July 2014[/editline]
Though i'm never gonna buy those, they're stupidly expensive :v:
I like how my mobo has a mini pcie slot below the first pcie3x16 slot so I can still fit a bluetooth card there

Anything above 1600 you'd just have to set an xmp profile because it will default to 1600
[editline]27th July 2014[/editline]
Just get the cheapest 1600mhz cl9 kit with heatsinks you can find. They all come with lifetime warranties and you don't have to worry about a company's binning process at 1600. Higher RAM speed does nothing with 90% of applications if you have a dedicated gpu
I just realized that Her (2013 movie) is a movie by Hollywood, on the dangers of DRM.
If the main character's AI girlfriend was GPLv3, he could have just forked her and fixed the problem that made her leave.
So i've been sniffing about in motherboards, and i'm now split in between four different ones.
Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H - MSI Z97-G43 - ASRock Z97 Pro4 - ASRock Z97M Pro4
I really can't make up my mind. They're all really close to each other in price, and they're somewhat in the cheapish range, compared to my old one.
One thing. Considering i'm going for some proper GPU this time, and possibly a beefy CPU to boot, i'd like to know what you guys think is the most optimal.
Oh, and another thing. I'm also thinking of going for a much smaller case this time. In my younger days, when a full-tower looked like is was the fucking shit (in my eyes), it's alot more apparent today, how much of a shit choice it actually was. Heavy and bulky as fuck, there's no need for all that room when i can't even fill half of it, and since my "bigger-must-be-better" mentality also ruled when i had to pick the old E-ATX motherboard, the budget did suffer from that back then. So if any, i would much rather prefer any of the microATX ones.
This will actually be my first, a bit more, sensible build.
So i'd really appreciate your honest and professional opinion on the four above-mentioned motherboards as a choice.

I would suggest you make a full post in the PC builder forum with your budget, preferences, and what you have decided so far.

Mmm, you might be on to something.
Anyone got a link to the web installer for Visual Studio Professional 2013 with Update 2? Dreamspark forces me to use their secureshit download manager for some reason.

I'll take a look at it tomorrow. It's late, and i'm just about to hit the bed.

and yet im stuck in here cause my father cant house me in his place and i cant move out to friends either(i refuse to freeload off friends and in my honest opinion i've done it for too long during some other bullshit)
basically im a trainwreck but hey i go here and play games to escape that
That sucks dude, I'm just getting out of a similar situation. Lived with my GF in a student house for 2 years, wanted out for the majority of it. I actually tried breaking up with her once, but it just made the atmosphere in the house worse, plus she went all weird and creepy, leaving notes taped to my door, on my desk etc. Just hang in there, it does get better.
Why is CNET so shit for downloads now, now it gives you a downloader to download whatever you want to download. What's the point of that? Also, the downloader can be bigger than the fucking file I want.
I got a $100 Amazon gift card, what to buy?

They killed an unreleased chip. Good job.

Well, someone has to be the first to try it.
Pretty interesting because it seems to have 12 cores, but the specs say it'll have 8 so my guess is they're binned xeons

Pretty much all Ivy-E i7's are binned 8 core Xeons, so that makes sense. Guess they have a different die for their 18 core though

Because now they can jam toolbar installers into the downloader, it's all about the money
Still can't be worse than an old version of MSN that installed literal adware, popups with music would appear on the desktop every 15 minutes or so
Imagine playing gmod and suddenly you hear that fucking gummy bear song blasting in the background. Now imagine you have 2gb of ram and Vista, alt-tabbing would take absolutely forever
At this point if I can't download it directly from the website (or from something like Dropbox or Mediafire) I don't want to go anywhere near it.
Download managers should just all go away. There is very little point for most situations now.

Shoulda gotten a Xeon. Also, just grab one of the x99 18 core Xeons when they come out. Plus you're looking at double the RAM for ddr4. And iirc the "intel accepted" speed for ddr4 on x99 is 2133?
