wait... can you run a gmod server on one of those cheaper vps plans? like ~$20?
that would be pretty handy actually, never looked into these things before
I'm running a gmod server off a £2/month OVH VPS :v

How's the lag?

that's insane
i don't know anything about hardware these days
stopped giving a fuck back in 09, too much stuff came out
How's the lag?
Non-existant :)
EDIT: Although its basically at its limits, works fine though
Garry's mod really doesn't need much memory to run on. It's more processor bound than anything, and even then that shouldn't be much of a problem if you aren't on a sub netbook tier chip. Half a gig is plenty for a few people to play on until you start making contraptions using tons of props.
At least it was that way a few years ago. I have no idea if it's ballooned a bit with recent updates. I wouldn't be at all surprsied if you could run it on a half gig premium SSD plan from ramnode with zero problems (outside of a smallish player cap).

That's the thing, it's running what is essentially just a deathmatch gamemode so it barely uses anything.

I had an equivalent to the $5/mo plan (512 MB SVZ) for my old sandbox server. It lagged like crap in the very beginning then steadily got better (though admittedly most of that was probably because it was the early days of Linux servers for GMod).
If you're willing to shell out for the $20/mo plan I recommend it for GMod, since it will run way better. But you could probably skate by on the $5/mo plan.
got a new macbook pro
this screen is pretty

I want a retina macbook.
Probaby gonna get one after a few more refreshes, since I got a new Ultrabook some time ago.
10 dollar plan should be fine. He could start on the 5 and see how it runs. If he really needs more, he can just upgrade the plan. All that happens is you get an invoice for the difference in price.

I wanted to wait for a big refresh before picking one up, but I've using the same macbook since 2008 and finally decided to get one since they did a decent update the other week
delicious standard 16gb of ram and 512gb ssd, and the GT 750M shouldn't be that much of a worry since it should let me play "simplish" stuff like WoW and CSGO when on the go. huge jump from a 2.0GHz C2D, 8gb of ram, 9400m and 120gb ssd

Got first-gen i7, 8gb RAM and 256GB SSD. I'm gonna wait a bit like 1 generation after broadwell, and then upgrade.

I think my dad has the same one.
I think my dad has the same one.
Mine is still performing like a fucking champ, So I see no reason for me to upgrade right now.
But I can't wait for the day I get a new one. It's gonna be a huge jump.

$20 is literally nothing, pretty cool how it's so cheap
when i get better i'm definitely moving my server to a dedicated host with multiple servers
i7 9xx master race, who's with me?

I remember when 512mb VPS's were like 20 bucks a month.
My Amnesia A Machine for Pigs review is almost done. After like 25 rewrites I think I've settled on my opinion of it. Just gotta record one amendment to it and a little skit for the opener.

This is bizarre. Dxtory is having problems maintaining a consistent 60 fps output at 1080p suddenly. It's not a processor limitation, and it doesn't look like a disc limitation either. I'm stumped.

are you fucking kidding me this computer is literally two days old

PC Decrapifier = win.

I use vegas for gameplay stuff because honestly I find it faster. I do use Premiere for "filmic" things now.

Revo ftw
... Just reinstall the OS.
good VPS host? need a fairly low end VPS (1GB of memory and a single okay CPU) but decent amount of storage space and bandwidth limit. everything between 50-100GB of storage is preferred with at least 1TB bandwidth cap
If you want a fuckton of storage space at the cost of less hardware fault tolerance I'd recommend looking into the storage plans at VPSDime (affiliate link if you're feeling nice). For $15/mo I'm running ownCloud with 1TB storage, my websites, Mumble and Subsonic servers and it's been working well for me.

Was about to hit buy. Then I saw the TOS.

...yeah, I was gonna use it for Torrents. Oh well.

holy crap, that's incredibly cheap. there has to be a catch somewhere when you can get 500GB of storage and a fairly okay VPS for only $7 a month
[editline]3rd August 2014[/editline]
oh, wing found the catch. no thanks

No TS, but okay for Mumble?
