Hey guys, would Crunchbang be the best linux distro for a typical Intel Atom N450 netbook?

No surprise here.
what kind of tiny baby hands do all of you midgets have that a 15" the size of the y500 is considered large
The kind that had used a MacBook Pro for 5 years before my Y500. The Y500 is laughably heavy and thick, especially when you factor in the 2.5lb power brick(never a more appropriate use for that term) you need when you go SLI with it. I'd happily get another MacBook Pro and damn the loss of the second GPU, if I could afford a new computer right now.
how hard would it be putting an ethernet jack on a windows tablet like really
now we gotta get one of those usb plug things, as installing from sticks is a mess
aargh

An Ethernet port is nearly twice as thick as my whole T100, and I think more than twice as thick as a Surface 3. What we need is a low profile Ethernet standard, then you just carry a low profile adapter and there you go.

In other news I just got home from 16 hours of fiddling about in Maya making tiny tweaks constantly to appease unpleasable bosses. "Hey, add this thing that's really difficult to add!" 5 hours later "Wow, that thing that was really difficult to add sure is ugly. Get rid of it."
this tablet i got at work is as thick as a port, and i've had laptops here earlier where the port flips open so it can be even smaller
not a problem really

Think about how much board real estate that takes though. Because not only do you need to add the port itself, you also need a networking adapter chip, and believe it or not that is an awful lot of real estate for the handful of people who would really need an ethernet port.
When did Origin get all those neat old games?

someone should make a tablet for power users
even getting into the bios of this thing is a pain in the ass, and it's not even a standardized one
would buy at an instant

Is there even a BIOS?
Aren't tablets EFI based or something?

i still call it a bios
uefi is such trash, often laggy, no standard in keyboard shortcuts and some stuff requires a mouse
fuckin secure boot too

Oh. Well that sucks. I thought the point of UEFI was to make it simpler by accessing the settings through the OS or something.
Oh yay newegg ships to the Netherlands now, i wonder if i can get parts for cheaper because they always have deals going on:

$103 = €77, let's not do that

... The Raspberry Pi has combination USB+Ethernet controller, it really doesn't take that much space.
I'm not entirely sure why a tablet would need Ethernet though. If you're doing work, get a laptop, tablets are for dicking around.
You can go ahead and laugh at this post in 2 years when the entire tech industry has changed everything again, though.

if i just want to run to the other side of the school and help someone a tablet is way easier to carry around than a whole laptop
and if it has an ethernet jack i can check for network errors too, and connect to the main server

I tried to use a tablet to document cases and stuff, back when I was in helpdesk and did internal on-site support.
That day I learned 3 things:
1. Expectation != Reality
2. A Tablet can't replace Pen and Paper, even if the tablet has a digital pen.
3. A Tablet can't replace a Laptop, even for doing simple documents.
content:
On tuesday, a classmate asked me if I could give his netbook a look, it hasn't worked for months. I agreed, he brought it to class today, I forgot my tools and chose to leave it in my bag until I'm back home.
I get back home, unpack the thing, no video signal or BIOS beep, fans and HDD seem to spin up. Open it up, the RAM's a bit off. I seat the RAM correctly and the thing boots.
This is a clear example that my highschool technician's degree in informatics is complete garbage. This guy is gonna finish the year in four months as a qualified computer repairman (lel, topkek, etc) and he doesn't even know how to seat a RAM stick properly (well, that or something worse like not knowing how to do basic troubleshooting). We've opened the damn things in class before. This isn't a difficult process, you don't even have to remove screws.
I'm actually considering charging him an idiot fee or something.

Well, it can, you just need a flappy keyboard. Although for extended use business lappies are better.

Similar field, Came to the same conclusion.
It's all fine and dandy until you need to remote into something or run command line utilities. At which point the standard input methods such as a mouse and keyboard are just better.
Yes you could carry a bluetooth keyboard, but why? Just get a laptop.
The most successful device for me doing general sysAdminig was a little Acer Aspire netbook.

Not all UEFI is like that, my PC BIOS have that boot to UEFI option with linux livecd but it looks like a standard bios, act like a standard bios, do a standard bios would normally do
Edit: No one is calling UEFI, everyone is calling that F12 menu bios, its easier to say that

It's called an Xjack, and why stop at a low profile ethernet interface when you can impliment PCMCIA or ExpressCard and open the door to all sorts of expansion peripherals.
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/XJACK_network_card_in_use.jpg[/t]
Yet a bunch of machines don't have ExpressCard or PCMIA, ie MacBook Pros.

That looks like it could easily break.
Imagine someone pulling on that ethernet cable. ohgod.

Last I saw the unibody MBP's had ExpressCard.
Got a Latitude XFR in the shop today. I think this thing could take a bullet caked with dirt and running an i5 and a 830 pro
