Depending on what you're using the VM for, an i7 won't make a big difference (unless of course, you run 4+ VMs at a time or need multiple threads). RAM, disk drive speed, and video performance tend to be bigger bottlenecks.
I only use my VM for very light-weight stuff which consists of pretty much nothing but SS13. I used to have better performance, but for some reason it has tanked a lot now. audio is stuttering and it lags out my entire system the second I start the guestOS. I have 8GB of memory and an i5 4670k, so I wouldn't have thought that this would be an issue
I run Win8.1 on it, given it permission to use all 4 cores, 2GB of memory allocated and I've enabled VT-x on it. I use VMware Player for it. for some reason the CPU usage is very low in the guestOS, but the CPU usage on the host system goes batshit insane which also lags the guestOS out
and VT-d, I wish I was aware of all of this when I bought this CPU

wait, you mentioned disk drive speed? that only affects it if I were to actively use the disk, wouldn't it? for heavier stuff like downloading, moving lots of files etc.
woah holy shit chrome remote desktop supports headless
wtf google you're just handing this shit out for free i would give you money for it

so what is headless?

Yeah it will only affect stuff actively using the HDD. I mention it because if the host OS and guest OS are accessing the same physical drive its very easy to overload it.
Also, for what its worth, I've read in certain circumstances, multiple core on a VM can perform worse. Reason being is that the hypervisor needs to wait for the number of cores assigned to the VM to be available on the physical machine before it can do anything (this is where an i7 having 8 virtual cores could be in handy since you will have 4 cores ready more frequently). When you only have 4 total cores, its not going to happen often. I would actually recommend taking it down to 2 or 3 cores and see if that helps.
In other words, since you told the VM to be a quad core, its spending a lot of time waiting for all four cores to be idle. You need to set it down to 2 or so it only needs to wait for 2 cores to open.
so what is headless?
Runs as a background service AFAIK.

ohh, that makes sense. it used to be at one core, but I changed it to four which probably explains why everything just turned into a big soup
So DDR4 is on Newegg now

Then that would explain it. Unless I need the multi thread performance, I just stick with one core. Or if I'm pegging out the virtual CPU, I will use two. Then everything is snappy it runs on demand.

I was planning to build a top of the line gaming rig once Haswell-E and GTX 800 comes out, but the price of DDR4 makes me doubt my decision
Hopefully by next summer prices are down a tad, unlikely though

basically i've got a computer sitting next to router to act as FTP
using chrome remote desktop i don't need monitor or kb/m by it, i can just access it from my PC
(its windows running there)

What does Chrome remote desktop offer that RDP doesen't have?

But I don't wanna wait another year :(
the struggle is real
What does Chrome remote desktop offer that RDP doesen't have?
complete crossplatform
the ability to connect to windows boxes that aren't using pro/business/ultimate
Does chrome rd work on chromeOS yet?

Go choke on a bag of cocks, intel.

dafuq, even my laptop i5 has it. I thought of all things, an i7 would be the one to definitely have it.
Same sorta bugs in SA, boats are fine but swimming is uselessly slow
Driving school is also impossible to finish (can't barrel roll, 2 wheel and a few other things)
Same fix for Vice City, set V-sync on for the game in your graphics card drivers and it should fix it. I've been playing San Andreas fine now in 60 fps (Set the frame limiter off once the modification in the driver has been made).
Yeah, I'm gonna put V-sync on. But it's interesting to see which things are timed after the framerate.

And I'm also surprised that it's still somewhat playable even when running 10x faster than it's originally intended to.
Does anybody know any free or affordable program for like finding the largest file on your system?
I have a problem with disk space and I cant figure out what is taking up all the space, my games should only be like 50 GB total and it's all I use my rig for.

Spacesniffer, makes a big grid of every file and folder on your hard drive, scaled by their size
WinDirStat is the other big one but it always crashed on me so I switched to SpaceSniffer
Got nick-picked again by my step dad. He doesn't like it when I leave this thing on overnight or just when I'm generally not using it.
At first, his argument was that it was wasting power. I then explained to him that just because my PSU is 900W doesn't mean it draws that much. Then he switched the concern to "it's the static". For a guy that works in a glass factory, where this type of knowledge is fairly commonplace, he tends to get absent minded about PC's themselves.
Well I have that 'problem' too. The difference is that my brother that was complaining, not my parents. But I know his logic, 500W power supply means that it always use 500W...
But the thing that makes me really mad is that he claimed that hibernating the pc is consuming power, because it is equal to sleep. Again, his logic is that it is 500W, if its hibernating it still consumes power and it will consume a lot of power
Does he unplug his 1500 watt microwave when it's not in use?
Wat, so he's saying it can use power while unplugged?
It sounds like he is getting confused between sleep and hibernate.
Well, yes. And our microwave is always unplugged except if we wanted to use it
If he only could search on google about hibernate... its really sad considering he takes computer science in his university and I'm just a 10 grader...
Sounds like you need to warranty your brother, I hope you got an extended warranty, nobody should be that stupid after about 12 years after manufacture.
