I wonder how such a comparison would look like if those included Windows phone. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline] And I wonder what that img means by widgets. Did they announce widgets in the Apple event?

Did they announce widgets in the Apple event?
Well Windows Phone does have more or less the same screen size and resolution (or larger/better), no NFC payments, notifications iirc, widgets (unless the tiles count which it probably doesn't), I was looking for any third-party keyboards and there doesn't seem to be many. Found this fake app tho http://www.windowsphone.com/en-ca/store/app/swiftkey-key-board/b6edaaa9-6ca8-4382-b518-80eb493bd622, there is cloud photo backup with OneDrive, I think there is battery stats.
Also, lenovo really sunk deep with their laptops. * Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 * Dolby Advanced Audio * Energy manager pro * Motherfucking norton antivirus * 2 million pieces of shitty lenovo software * Nitro Pro * SHAREit * ThinkAdvantage protection system * USB Enhanced Performance Keyboard (WTF is this) * Wave editor And the list goes on and on...
So don't get the new Lenovo's? Ok.

I once counted 32 HP programs on a fresh load. (Also McAfee seems to be Idea-brand, Norton for Think-brand)
Lenovo turning into Acer. Stop it Lenovo.
At least Lenovo's build quality isn't as bad as Acer's. ...yet
Also as much as Lenovo is dropping in recommendation, is there really anything notable better? I haven't seen a legitimately good laptop that is remotely affordable in a while. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline] Merge
For a recent Lenovo, which has Windows 8 keys integrated into Mobos, I did a fresh reinstall of windows 8 using the generic key, then activated with the on board serial. Gets rid of just about everything nice and easy.
I have a really hard time recommending laptops I just stopped even trying. Seriously we really need a laptop vendor to just put out a laptop with 0 and I mean 0 vendor software and this bloaty shit.
I've just started playing the game "What fits your budget best and doesn't have god awful build quality" when recommending laptops. I've kinda given up hope. Just get desktops for ever. And a battery backup for mobility.
So don't get the new Lenovo's? Ok.
Management bought them. Not me. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline] The funny thing is that Some lenovo software is making problems on windows 7 and makes the machine refuse to completly power off. Aparently it's tied to the Lenovo fingerprint sensor software.
You know what. I'd start recommending Apple Macbook for Mobility and just recommending users to boot camp it for windows 8 :v:
But affordability.

[editline]10th September 2014[/editline] The funny thing is that Some lenovo software is making problems on windows 7 and makes the machine refuse to completly power off. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline]
No bloatware or shitty software > affordability. I'm willing to pay more as a consumer.
I'm thinking more of the people who literally cannot pay that much. Cheaper to buy a laptop and just fresh-load it.
You dun goofed Lenovo.
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht081324 That seemed to work for a single reboot, but now it's back to hanging and have to rape the power button to get it to shut down. Safe mode works.
Judging from personal experience, nuking the drive and clean install Windows + Drivers gets me less problems down the line, than trying to clean up the wasteland provided by the manufacturer.
I see your point. Maybe I just don't have the patience to fresh-load OS's.
I personally agree with you, but seeing as I need a laptop and my budget is extremely low, I'm going to have to go with my method. Unless mentioning that I want a Mac to my very wealthy grandfather who I have always been the Windows side of that stubborn argument nets me one.
lenovo isnt as great as they used to be but i will keep buying them forever because i am contractually obligated to do so or they will steal my putrid cock. just keep a clean windows install prepped when you buy a new laptop these days from anybody.
The Hardware doesen't look too bad, but please for the love of god, Don't touch the software side. This is why OEM laptops have a terrible reputation. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline] Especially when you want to update your GPU driver and then it says: "This laptop requires a manufacturer specific version of the display driver, please check the manufacturers support website for more info." Then you check the OEM website, and the most recent version of their shitty driver is from 2010. Fuck that shit.
Thanks guys, these posts are really getting my hopes up because i just bought a thinkpad s440 last week :v:
Thanks guys, these posts are really getting my hopes up because i just bought a thinkpad s440 last week :v:
Personal experience with the T540p version: Preinstalled Version of Windows 7 is horrible and has problems with shutting down Preinstalled Version of Windows 8 is horrible and doesen't have problems with shutting down I don't like the touchpad the newer lenovo laptops have. Rightclicking on them is a bitch. Haven't had the chance to test out how linux works on it, but I guess it can't be worse than windows. A Clean install of Windows 8.1 seemed to work best.
you guys should buy macbooks liek every other college student
you guys should buy macbooks liek every other college student
Surprisingly enough there's only ~5 people using macbooks. Then again C# programming on a macbook would just be stupid
you guys should buy macbooks liek every other college student
I Personally am biased a bit towards Macbooks, but this is mostly due the fact that I really like OSX. If I could reliably install OSX on a non-apple laptop without bothering, then I wouldn't really think twice. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline]
Surprisingly enough there's only ~5 people using macbooks. Then again C# programming on a macbook would just be stupid
There were only 2 out of 12 people in my programming class using macbooks. And I was one of 2 persons running Linux in my Class. At least the class was structured to be Platform independent.
I had a tank of an old Fujitsu Lifebook I never used( and bought for ~$100) with a bluray drive and some 3000 series AMD/ATI GPU that's terrible, but plays games like Civ V ok. I traded it to my brother to buy my car back from him.
you guys should buy macbooks liek every other college student
I've started working on a Macbook, and I honestly don't like the OS. Some parts of it are great, but other stuff just seems dumb. I like the multi touch support, though. And while the Macbook is extremely well built, comfort is just... kinda shitty? My wrists hurt from using it, the edge is just uncomfortable. My old Sony Vaio had a shit touchpad and plastic all over, but at least using it didn't feel like slow wrist-cutting suicide. I'm of course exaggerating, but I don't know why this doesn't come up as a con in most reviews.
What I dislike most about OSX is that it yells fuck you in the face if you are a dev and use a non-apple keyboard. <>, [] and {} are in such a dramatically different place, it almost hurts. (Mainly applies to Swiss German KB Layout)
my only drag is with macbooks which is becoming less of an issue now is software support but i have this exact same gripe with linux everything i do needs windows and im just not used to alternatives or over ways to use the same programs as i do but in other OSs.
My needs for windows were mainly because of Microsoft Office. But now that LibreOffice is speeding ahead nicely, and I have set up Office 2003/2010/2013 machines's in my ~cloud~ if I need proper conversion or whatever, I don't really need anything that ties me to windows. Developing Python2/3, JavaScript (Node) or Ruby has always been a bit painful on Windows, so I'm glad to be able to move my deving work to Linux or OSX. Except for C#, but C# is also targeted at Windows systems.
I still gotta rework my Cloud System to provide more features. Maybe move away from Hyper-V to ESXi or XEN, and get a proper firewall. [editline]10th September 2014[/editline]
maybe I need a haitus and I should sell my rig and buy a mac instead and see how the other half lives, and then have a linux laptop as well
If you do, just go into it with an open mind. If your exact workflow doesen't work as you know it from Windows, then learn how to do it on OSX / Linux. Most people who try out other OS's go into it, expecting it to work just like Windows, and then disregard it as soon as they see that it's different.
All this laptop talk is making me seriously depressed. My w500 damn near had a critical meltdown a few days ago. temps hit 98C and went up before the bios hard shut the machine off. The heat sink was loose. I've completely disassembled it, reseated the processor, reapplied a thin layer of thermal compound, and reassembled it. It's still working, but I'm having to do things like this on it more often now. I had to do some drilling to bolt some of the frame back together earlier in the year. It's not long for this world, it's underpowered, and I don't know where I'm going to get a replacement that will live up to it's standards.
Man, all this talk of iPhones makes me realize: I really do need a new phone. This Droid is increasingly ancient. I noticed even the Twitter app isn't supported anymore, and the old version no longer works with images. What's a good sub-5" smartphone? I can afford a top-end phone, I just don't like the big-ass phones everyone makes nowadays. Preferably something with good software updates or well-supported by CM or whatever.
HTC One M8 Lumia Icon or Lumia 930. Nexus 5 Sony Z2
