The 5___s are often compared with the 2__s. What do you expect benchmarks to be compared with? 3___s estimates?

welll...... i was kinda thinkin they could be compared with teh 6000 series... but what do i know?? heh

He said what they're supposed to be compared to. Of course they're going to be benchmarked against the GTX 2 series.
You'd need several CPU's to run them in crossfire without a bottleneck.
Several cores, obviously; but that's completely different than having multiple CPU's.
Now, would someone who's actually technologically inclined, please give me a reasonable answer to my question? At the very least, the grade of a CPU you'd need to run a single 5970 without a major bottleneck.

meant to compete =/= currently compared with

i7 920.

It's just two 5870s.

Thanks for the reasonable reply. What about 4 in crossfire, I'm curious what that would take. That would be equivilant to a bit less than 8 5870's. PSU too, is that even really feasible? Each draws what under load, 350 watts?

Crossfire/SLi only support 4 GPUs, so you can only have 2 5970s
Crossfire/SLi only support 4 GPUs, so you can only have 2 5970s
I thought that it treated the 5970 as a single card allowing for crossfire, although it's a dual GPU card. Huh.
Crossfire/SLi only support 4 GPUs, so you can only have 2 5970s
I thought Crossfire supported up to 8 GPUs.

by the looks of a quick google search, it's the drivers that only have support for 4
by the looks of a quick google search, it's the drivers that only have support for 4
I thought that the drivers treated the 4870x2 and 5970 as singular cards.
AMD has already built a computer that has four 4870X2s in it. So it has eight GPUs; drivers will not be supporting eight GPUs at this point of time.
from 08 though, might have changed since then
from 08 though, might have changed since then
I hope so. (not that I'll ever get a quad 5970 build though)
assuming it's possible, how long d'you guys think it'll be before Trubritar got quad 5970s
I'm going to say a week, maybe 2
Come to think of it, it would be impossible because the 4870x2 and 5970 cards have only 1 crossfire connector each.

Depending on the amount of time it takes to have the stores back in stock.

oh shit yeah
well there's the 4 GPU limit
Each card draws 393 watts under-load. 393x4=1572. 1572+consumption from all else= about 1850 Watts.
Good luck finding a single PSU with that much juice. It would be impractical in theory as well.
2 PSUs
Thought about that, not many cases are able to house 2 PSU's though. Then you have to take into mind cooling, and how hot a case is going to get with all that in it. HAF932 has 2 spots though, doesn't it?
A full comparison for people like me that own the 4870 and want to know how much better this card is.

Can't wait for the 2' 8970. :downs:

so they just stop until technology advances far enough for them to halve the sizes? :downs: they don't make them bigger because they fucking feel like it
For Australians:
www.pccasegear.com had 2 different 5970's (Powercolor and Sapphire) which are both sold out with no ETA when the next will be arriving, both were priced at $999.
Does it have crossfire support? :smug:

I built my last computer for around that price.
Fuck that.

Jesus fuck, my 4870 is a cunt, I need a 5series for less power consumption alone!
