Do a virus scan, make sure you're not mining buttcoin for some dude in Russia or something
Today I tried booting up Apex Legends and EAC had some weird issue lauching, so I rebooted my PC, now it stays booting forever, trying to launch WinRE results in it taking forever and then simply rebooting. How tf do I even begin debugging this? SMART claims the SSD is okay. Oh, MCT is also being a huge bitch and won't let me create a media on my notebook either, so there`s that too.
For people who search this in the future- it was a dead storage harddrive, not even my main hdd. Windows is absolutely retarded and can hang when it finds a fucked up hard disk, even the fucking windows 10 installer will do that, without any errors because fuck verbose output amirite
say, which free antivirus do you recommend? or is free antivirus a bit of an oxymoron?
MBAM is always a solid choice.
hmm I'll look into it meanwhile I'm using Avira, is it any good? The thing just sits there, blocking modern warfare remastered .exes and sometimes getting pissed at a random csgo file...
Malwarebytes has a free scan and it's very good, but for realtime protection like Avira/Avast/Defender there's a monthly cost after a 14 day trial.
i had issues with steam launching but not "opening up" (it shows it's running in the task manager) rebooting seems to fix it.
it will boot eventually. The checkdisk will fail checkdisk happens on boot, it doesn't tell you
I left it for a long time and it never eventually booted, winRE would just reboot, and the proper install would hang there forever.
I ended up just disabling the sata port
Don't think that's true and was just a coincidence. The data cable is the only thing that is telling the controller the drive is there. That might have just been the BIOS getting confused and was telling Windows the drive was there. The PSU simply dumps voltage on the cables and doesn't really know what's there.
might just change then!
If you have Win10 the default antivirus is just dandy. It's basically MSE but built into Windows. Make sure you have Malwarebytes installed though, using its very nice powerful scan tool on occasion is good practice.
Windows still has the defender thing right? And that requires no nothing other than "yeah don't disable it" right? Can't I just tell MBAM not to run at startup?
Nah I don't think windows handles antivirus applications like that. While you could actually be able to disable mbam on startup, if you have a 3rd party AV installed, defender will modify it's own performance/actions to let the 3rd party one take priority. It's not completely disabled, but it just means actions on the computer aren't being processed by two AV systems at once
You can disable that pop-up. Look in the settings. Also, MBAM isn't really an "anti-virus" per se, it's more an adware scanner. Viruses do stuff like infect the computer and spread. It's a type of malware (malicious software). Adware is stuff like browser plug-ins that redirect your searches, stuff you can accidentally get by not un-ticking the check-boxes when installing your weird third party disc burning clients. MBAM is something you run along-side an AV, not in place of. I don't know why people recommend it when asked for a good AV. As for a good AV, unless you're a business that's willing to spent on something enterprise-grade, just go with the default Windows Defender.
My Windows 10 is being completely fucky lately too and I don't know why. Taking forever to log in, being unresponsive, and then everything being okay again after 10 minutes of being able to do fuck all. I'm pretty sure it's NZXT cam, but I have no idea why it's decided to start destroying Windows.
All of my preview images have disappeared. I cannot see any type of preview thumbnail whatsoever. The only way I can temporarily fix it is if I choose View>Pick any non-Icons>Change back to Icon where it first becomes a pixelated blurry mess. Then I have to redo it. And it becomes just a blurry mess. Then upon the third time the pictures are usually fixed and can (until I switch folder) be seen as usual. I cannot see any type of file. Images, folder thumbnails, videos, music. Anything. It's all just blank. This started happening about 9-10 months ago and during this time I've googled any solutions or causes for this issue but so far not a single thing has helped. I've installed third-party software to force thumbnails, cleared caches and all that jazz. Nothing. They just disappeared one day and that was that. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211241/6faea23f-28b8-4367-9e87-08c7b4c9b404/nothumbnails.jpg
Try this as an admin taskkill /f /im explorer.exe del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db start explorer.exe
Are you also using Avira, by any chance? Avira seems to be clashing with recent windows update.
Shit, I am. I'll get rid of it and see how I go. Best alternative?
I swear there was a command you could run to extend partitions that Disk Manager won't let you extend but I can't find it https://i.imgur.com/reBIaNl.png I just shrank a partition so I could add on to my boot partition, but when I try in Disk Manager it's unavailable https://i.imgur.com/x2bPtRq.png
Default Windows 10 Defender if you feel like you need realtime protection, or go with Avast! if you disable its automatically turned on borderline malware email signature. Malwarebytes if you're willing to pay a sub for the best.
I don't know about the command line, but Disk Management doesn't allow you to extend a partition unless the space directly to the right is unallocated. And if I'm not mistaken GParted will allow you to do so but it'll move all the files from the D: partition over "to the right" and then extend the partition to that location. It takes a while to do though. Note that the GParted process may have change since the last time I had to do this which was many years ago.
It seems every time my PC goes to sleep lately it immediately kicks awake again with the fan on full blast for about 5 secs. Then it just stays like that until it goes in sleep mode again and the same shit happens. How do I even track down what is causing this?
Could be wake-on-lan or wake-on-USB, you can turn that off in your bios.
it's a bug with onedrive iirc. I have the same issue. source: file explorer not showing thumbnails for onedrive folder
In cmd run this: powercfg /lastwake It'll show what caused it to wake up.
This didn't work. Infact I never used OneDrive. I had it but I never once actually used it in any way. And neither did this, unfortunately. Even in Admin mode and running cmd as admin it keeps giving me Access Denied here. I am close to just reinstalling my OS at this point.
