It is kind of a bummer, but there's always OS X Lion in the meantime, that said I'm sure a lot of people reading this thread aren't using OS X. I will say I'm pretty happy that Apple's realised the AUD conversion rate is pretty good and decided to only charge $32 instead of the normal 15-30% markup.
September most likely.
September sounds about right seeing as that's when Apple tends to announce new iPods, it's also seeming increasingly likely that they'll announce the new iPhone there. iPods aren't nearly as big for Apple as they used to be and due to the lack of news at the WWDC it seems likely that they'll turn it into an iOS device keynote instead.
Yeah, there's now separate apps for Movies and Music; along with Photos they have a pretty nice set of apps for each type of content. I think it makes more sense this way as it's how the iPod Touch has always handled it and now that's consistent across every iOS device.
Regarding iPod branding, I don't think the brand means much to Apple anymore, In fact it wouldn't surprise me if they launched the next iPod touch with a 128GB model, a new name (not iPod) and stopped making iPod classics. When people think iPod they think a glorified HDD / SSD with a tiny screen, that's not the iPod Touch at all and it would make sense if it became it's own device. It would make even more sense for it to be the positioned as the 'iPhone Wi-Fi' (like the iPad) since it has iMessage now meaning the only thing really missing is voice calling and how long do you think it'll be before Apple gets into that?
I do think you make a good point about the probable convergence of the Touch and iPhone, but for the moment, the way I see it is that on the Touch, since that IS an iPod, there is no need for an "iPod" app. The entire product is the iPod. This contrasts to the iPhone, where an iPhone comes with an iPod as it were. I agree though the inconsistency is jarring, and the fact that films were under the iPod app, but not photos was just a mess (I understand that this roots from previous iPods, but it's just messy).

As for your earlier iTunes screenshot, I bet the volume dial is there to stay. Apple used a hell of a lot of those polished disks in their WWDC icons, even for stuff like Mail which has an icon already. That and iOS5 is using smaller disks too for the sliders rather than rectangular blocks like before.
Yeah I get that it's staying, I think Apple has learnt from their past experiences with brushed metal and the new elements making use of that style are gorgeous; case in point the Launchpad icon, but I have a thing for rockets in icons. That said they're overdoing the faux-leather a bit too much now, iCal and Reminders stand out as potentially looking pretty dated in a few years in much the same way as brushed metal does now.
I love that they're giving iOS updated UI elements, like they did with Lion. I just wish they'd update everything like they did with Lion.
Erm, I'll pay 2$ to anyone who gets my UDID registered, really want to try this thing.
Is an update to iOS 5 fairly guaranteed to work? Seems concerning that you can't downgrade
Is an update to iOS 5 fairly guaranteed to work? Seems concerning that you can't downgrade
Definitely not guaranteed, I've read of some people having issues. Worked perfectly for me though.
has anyone here gotten the "voiceover/notification center" bug to work on an iPad?
if you don't know what I'm talking about: its where you can install iOS 5 and activate it with no udid by triple clicking the home button, tapping on the clock at the top center, then swiping down from the top with 3 fingers to reveal the notification center, from there you tap on the little Yahoo icon on wheather or stocks and then just tap the home button and you're done.
I got to notification bar about 10% of the way down, then it stops.
What is this UDID being registered? I'd love to give iOS5 a go :shobon:
However, i'd be prepared to wait I guess.
The UDID is the "unique device ID" It is different for every device and must be registered with apple for you to activate your devices using iOS 5.
well, I guess I'm not testing iOS 5 :frown:
Just got the beta running, it's very nice :buddy:

I figured this out the hard way. I had to downgrade to 4.3.3 ):
I figured this out the hard way. I had to downgrade to 4.3.3 ):
Ouch, that has to suck.
Is there anyway to test this out on a 3rd Generation iPod touch?

Is this new?
Yes it's very new. The entire preferences panel for notifications got an overhaul for iOS 5.
That is hot.
Huh. I might give this a go over the weekend, I need to blow away my 3GS anyways.

yes
[editline]8th June 2011[/editline]
oops, left window open and didn't refresh to see replies :v:
Holy shit nevermind.
Guys, if you have an iPod Touch or iPad, you don't have to have your UDID registered, apparently. Also, that above glitch works out fine without the emergency call - turn on voiceover by clicking 3 times, and 3 finger swipe down from the status bar, weather widget, WALLA.
[editline]9th June 2011[/editline]
It's to bad I can't get the notification center to come down no matter what unless I'm in voiceover.
:smith:
Been using this since the announcement yesterday, no problems so far.
Pretty similar to Android in terms of dragging it down, but better looking and better control in my opinion. You can customise lots of notification settings, and specify whether to do new style notifications or old ones per app etc.
Does it work with carriers or is it like that non-dev thing?
i'm having problems, crap.
Dragging down doesn't work unless VoiceOver is enabled and there's no multitasking, double clicking the home button doesn't do anything. It probably has something to do with the workaround, or something, maybe I don't know.
[editline]9th June 2011[/editline]
Heh, nevermind, everything's fixed. I was messing around in Camera.app when I got sent back to the setup, and it let me continue as normal and now everything works. No need for a UDID.
The setup process is fantastic, you have no reason to use a computer ever for this device now. It'll especially be useful for iPads, though.
[editline]9th June 2011[/editline]
also background syncing & wireless syncing hnnng
So you were able to do it on the iPad? I have an iPad 2 16gb wifi and the notifications tab only comes down about a 10th of the way and then stops.
On the advert thing for iOS5 it says 'It's years ahead of it's time'.
I think they meant a year behind

you should go into advertising
I got the notification center to come down.
But, erm.
iPads don't have the weather app V:v:V
[editline]9th June 2011[/editline]
and I can't be assed to downgrade, so I'll just look for people to get my UDID activated.
[editline]9th June 2011[/editline]
Thank you DogGunn!
Checking it out - the new iPod (or Music) UI is really cool.
Also you can use the device during sync now. Nice!

Is this new?
Damn it. I was hoping there would be a mix of notifications. Some things like Facebook I don't care about, but other things like "Can't connect to Carrier network" would stay as a modal window
Fuck, now I see why they didn't allow to use the device during sync before, everything starts to lag.
