i was joking
I hope this isn't true, I want competition.
wait if ati becomes the only graphics card company, wont that mean they can drive their prices up as they are the only choice?
Haha, no. It's illegal to monopolize. IE., All the grocery stores cannot become one big company and jack up the prices of food. The government would take over and deal with it.
Remember when VooDoo ended?
Well this is nothing like it because it's fake.
Nvidia status: told

It's not a source if it uses the original source as its source...

Groceries are not the same as graphics cards. It's not like nvidia are going to be nationalised.
PDATE (11:37): Meanwhile we got a reaction from a Nvidia employee. They told us off-the-record that the GeForce GTX 285 isn't at the end-of-life, but at the same time they heard they weren't selling it. Who gets the difference may tell us, because we don't. The same guy told us that GTX 275 is at this moment very unsuccessful, but that the GTX 260 still sells pretty good. This is pretty much the same story as told on SemiAccurate.com.
Rough translation, but better than Babelfish :v:
It's not end-of-life and they aren't selling it? That can only mean one thing...
They're going to rebrand it :v:
Time to buy some AMD stock.
Larrabee is coming, so ATI wouldn't have the monopole forever.
Not that Nvidia is actually giving up.
god damn it ATi are going to skyrocket the prices on gfx cards....
They can't, they are too elastic (economically), maybe they can rise the prices by 50 or so dollars, nothing more.
This is really sad, to be honest.
I like nVidia.

You just couldn't read the translation of the last bit...
While this article may be bullshit, there is a lot of truth in their other article. Nvidia definitely makes less profits with their cards than ATI. Big and expensive chips along with 512-bit memory bus makes it very hard for them to keep competitive with ATI's prices, while ATI still has a lot of space for lowering their prices. Not so sure about Nvidia making losses with their gpus though. Semiaccurate i guess.
Godamnit, I just bought a fucking GTX275 not 3 weeks ago.
Glad my next card will be a Quadro FX 5800 or the Fermi equivalent.

Doesn't mean it's going to stop working? Why does it matter?
Wow. This makes my GTS250 old. And I bought it a few months ago.
But... but... but...
I LOVE nVidia...

It's not going anywhere, anyways why is everyone so worried, the GTX 280 had it's EOL very early with the introduction of the GTX 285.
I'll give it to Charlie- He really hates Nvidia and will work his ass of trying to drag them through the mud. He seems to be thorough and willing to spend time & money for accuracy on his reports. He is also very careful not to slander to avoid lawsuit.
Charlie, I hate you as much as you hate nvidia but +1 for you and your hard work.
This is a post from another forum, and relates to an older article written by the same writer, but I think it holds fairly true. This guy might be a completely biased asshole, but when you're working in press, you can't openly type random shit up without being hit by a lawsuit for slander, I wouldn't be surprised if this article has quite a bit of truth to it. At least, he does seem to have quite a few industry connections and he does some pretty indepth research, even if most of it is to just bash Nvidia.
The article is probably slightly off, but hey it's true i would go for a 5850 or 5870.
Atleast nvidia fanboys will go wild since it's more of them.
*I mean hell the 5850 is 40bucks more than gtx 275 and a lot cheaper than gtx 285. It had been fucking retarded to buy nvidia high end right now and gtx 295 is not even close worth the money. Not to mention eyefinity and new directx the 5xxx series will bring you.
This.
We should put a ban to any site that charlie goes on. Semi Accurate is one. He shit talks about Intel and NVIDIA, and makes up crap. Fudzilla has been bad recently, but the manager has been quick to correct the "misarticles"
on topic: you guys do know that the demand for graphics cards are extremely high, but the supply is running low?
Graphics Cards Vendors Complain About Tight Supply of GPUs
Taiwan-based suppliers of graphics cards have accused ATI, graphics business unit of Advanced Micro Devices, and Nvidia Corp. of creating shortages on the market of discrete desktop graphics processing units (GPU). Meanwhile, both ATI and Nvidia have shifted their inventory policies, which does not allow their partners to receive huge discounts when buying graphics chips in large quantities on the last day of a quarter.
A number of recent media publications suggest that ATI and Nvidia have started to reduce supplies of previous-generation high-end offerings, e.g., ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 285, as well as previous-generation 55nm graphics chips in general. Due to short supply of GPUs, graphics board vendors are reportedly even considering to increase pricing of graphics boards in order to fulfill the demand. Some claim that shortages will persist till Q1 2010.
