This is fucking awesome.
firefox and ubuntu and tizen will fail because they have no apps
google can't really ditch android so easily.
the best solution would be to slowly start rebuilding android as a google os:
start locking down the play store
get rid of dalvik
replace holo with the google ui thing (aka what all ios google apps and google now use)
start making actual google phones, enough of that nexus bullshit
do a chromium - chrome thing, where chromium is the open source thing anyone can use, and chrome has lots of google with closed source
[editline]5th March 2013[/editline]
but to make that happen google needs to have a solid base, because they will piss oems off a lot if they do this
Won't happen. Eric Shmidt has said before that their strategy is to gain lots of market share, to have a bigger piece of the pie but not a controlled system. It's basically a veiled way of saying "we made this to get user info and ad revenue, we really don't care if more control would give you users a better experience."
They're already working toward the Google phone thing.
As far as the rest goes, I think it would take time, but they could totally phase android out.
And as far as the other OS thing goes, I'm really only worried about OEM systems like tizen. All that have to do is release an android-tizen port tool. That would be easy. Especially for Samsung specifically because, let's face it, people who done want an iPhone want A Galaxy.
For the average consumer, calls, texts, basic social networking and Web browsing are the only things that matter.

The problem is, that's under attack now. Amazon is leading the "let's abuse open source software" charge.

Honestly google needs to worry about what happens when every other OEM says "Okay, this OS isn't working as a business model because we're making no money." Samsung is doing great with Android, and although they could try to knock google out of the picture by transitioning their fan base, they're not the ones with as much to gain as another OEM might.
They released an actual competing API. And it goes with their Android fork.
Amazon will be a threat to both the platform and Google's market share of they don't put at least some controls in place.

How so? I don't see the other OEM's lines as actual recognized and coveted brands.

Uh because if an OEM drops Android that's tons of potential users lost? HTC still sells millions of phones. What if, theoretically, they adopted WP8 exclusively? Not a great outcome for Google.
I understand that, but I think samsung has the most to gain. I was just wondering why you say others have more.

I thought about it after posting. It's not so much less to gain for Samsung as it is, less need to gain, because they're actually making money. Where as the other companies simply can not sustain their business model and change is a necessity.

I agree. I think HTC is doing a good thing with the one line, though. I could see them switching places with samsung as long as Sammy keeps making a billion phones no one wants.
More to the point, I think once Google actually starts using Motorola, OEMs will become less supportive of Android anyway.

this has me wondering... why isnt google using Motorola now that they got that resource?
They just pushed through the rest of what Moto had in the pipeline (all those new razrs).
The XPhone is gonna be a test run for just that. They're dipping a toe in the water. It's coming.
cool
And any way you slice it, the Android system of today is coming to a close.
As Kaabii said, the OEM's just can't sustain it.
I'm just really curious about where Google takes android from there...

It could be different if they hadn't fucked around in 2011 and let everyone buy an SII as it dominated the market, giving Samsung a huge grip on the android phone market.
I agree.
In other news, latest 10.1 nightly supports the OG RAZR. Not sure about the Maxx, but usually what works on one works on the other.

You mean exactly that which caused HTC to drop from being the top-1 Android phone maker? :haw:
The latest CM10.1 nightlies are giving me UI cancer. The Play Store button is wrongly aligned, it's too close to the right side of the screen.

Hey who here has Evernote Premium?
Using Chrome on my s3 seems perfectly fine, the only problem I have is its not very good at predicting what link I wanted to press when on a site like FP
Hey guys, not sure if this is the right spot to ask for help on but I was thinking of getting my first phone and thought to get an Android - but my issue is I just don't have credit to my name so my only choices is to get a phone online with no contract (no credit check) or go to a store to get a phone w/ contract. And the only good Android devices with a affordable price that I can find without contracts would be the SII and Nexus 4, but I don't know about the SII with it being soon two generations behind.
Am I not looking hard enough or should I just go to a store?

What's wrong about the Nexus 4?
What's wrong about the Nexus 4?
Oh, nothing wrong with the Nexus 4. I was just wondering were those my only choices?
Yeah basically, and I'd choose the Nexus 4. Better in every way except for storage and maybe camera.

Alright, guess I'll try to get the Nexus 4 with 16GB tomorrow.

Now I gotta think about which service provider and plan to go with, uggh

HTC is doing a good thing, but it doesn't matter. People don't seem to understand that just like the PC industry, even if a company makes a superior product, it doesn't matter because without marketing they're going to get steamrolled anyways.
Samsung carpet bombs the media with ads for their phones. They spend more money than Coca-Cola on advertisement, and I have never seen anything but a Samsung Galaxy ad. No one can top that.

It's funny because I never see Samsung ads on TV here in Canada, although I watch it very infrequently. I've seen Apple ads though and I see phones from Samsung and other OEMs promoted through carrier commercials. But never a Samsung Galaxy ad. I know they exist though because I've seen them all on Youtube.

It has no LTE, so your choice is either AT&T or T-Mobile. The former will almost definitely have better building penetration because they use 850/1900MHz while T-Mobile is 1700/2100. But obviously price factors in too.
