huh, cool. does my phone need to be rooted?
also, would it even work as a phone in australia?
After a whole adventure of bricking, flashing, fastboot, bin files, KDZ files, CWM, TWRP, battery removing, battery inserting (x10000) and holding all possible key combinations at boot I finally did it.
My Optimus 3D is running ICS and everything seems to work, including 3G and 3D.
It's official, the Optimus 3D now has ICS ready and available. It's only released in China, but that doesn't have to be a problem if you know how to flash.
Now that my phone has ICS, it is slightly less shitty. Can I live with my phone a bit longer and wait for the next batch of high end phones? I'll use my phone for a couple of days and I'll see. So far the improvements look like they're huge.
LG finally did something right update wise, but they're still motherfucking cunts for taking so long.

You will need to flash the ROM and then root, and then change your CSC back to *OPS* (Australia).
EDIT: if you're not comfortable with these things, I would suggest not doing it since all the 4.1.2 ROMs have non-Australian CSCs, which may possibly soft-brick your phone until you can change the CSC. Although I'm not sure how much influence the CSC has on actually being able to connect to a network.
EDIT: actually, Australia has multiple CSCs, so before you flash anything, dial *#1234# and write down your exact CSC (the three letters after "I9100" are most important).

yeah, mine's XSA, I already got that
but you might be right, I'll give it a miss since I don't know enough about all this to be confident
I'm not sure I want to do anything that wont be reversible anyway :v:
Other than the battery icon, I love that notification bar.

So, since Glass runs on Android, would this be the place to talk about it?
Yes, Glass is okay here.
And I love how everyone assumes that Exynos 5 Octa will be A-OK for power consumption on a phone when the max TDP allowed to CPU is around 1-1.5 W, when just two Cortex A15s at 1.7 GHz hits 4W max and four will hit 8W max. The TDP of the quad A7s is like .65W, which is small but almost within spitting range of dual Krait 200s or A6 Swift. If quad A7s don't deliver enough performance to equal a dual core Krait, this thing is beyond fucked for battery efficiency because of how often it'll need to touch the Cortex A15s. Using more than one is liable to make the whole fucking phone overheat in minutes, so I'm pretty sure Samsung can't let the phone run a benchmark at full throttle, the Cortex A15s are probably heavily limited to meet TDP limits.
The 5250 can't even go in phones. It's absolutely insane to think the octa could, even with big.LITTLE. Samsung will eventually design their own core, like Qualcomm and Apple. A15 is a server core, it just doesn't work in phones and really not great in tablets either.

And then you have the comment threads that are filled with cries of "OMG CRAPDRAGON" every time the possibility of a Snapdragon-only Galaxy S comes up.

It's people who are stuck in 2011. Better single threaded performance with less cores is the way to go for both overall performance and efficiency, Swift and Krait prove this compared to quad core designs. Qualcomm isn't going to fall behind because there is no jump like A8 to A9 to crush them, because the jump comes with a huge increase in power usage. Honestly the problem is with so many android owners you get lots of idiots, who don't know what they're talking about. Comment threads relating to phones usually cause laughter or frustration and are probably best ignored.
[editline]12th March 2013[/editline]
Also the Snapdragon S4 galaxy S3 still has the most fluid launcher I've used on an Android device. I haven't used the exynos one but considering without tons of widgets the S3 was 60fps most of the time it doesn't matter. A lot of these performance boosts are just dick waving. How about you have it run nicely on two cores, and focus on efficiency so you don't need a huge battery to keep it going all day.

Meh. I think the Snapdragon 600 is clearly the best SoC right now for a phone, the single core performance is solid and with every core having its own power island and individually clocked, it's much more power efficient.
I think the S3's launcher is definitely smooth, but I dislike the functionality. Maybe it's just because I'm used to Sense, but I really don't like Samsung's aesthetic, or lack of it. Sense 5 so far is the best of the OEM UIs that are not basically AOSP, in my eyes. Hopefully the next few updates will make it possible to remove Blinkfeed from the homescreen and bring back the max of 7 homescreens for the Sense launcher.
Vanilla android > anything
[editline]13th March 2013[/editline]
I have heard literally noone that likes their OEM-skins, except maybe Sony's which is quite minimal as it is

I think people that really believe that AOSP is the only possible skin people can like do not have proper sampling. There are people that actually like Touchwiz a LOT. I personally prefer Sense over AOSP, mostly because I don't want to spend years and years finding apps to replace functionality lost from Sense.

I'm the same way. AOSP actually feels too barebones to me. New TouchWiz is the best overall, but I actually like the Sense icons (messaging/phone/etc) and widgets. I think the Sense lock screen is ugly and awkward though. And the extra functionality is the most important thing, more important than the actual skin (I'm back on my HTC and I miss a lot of extra things bundled into S3 TouchWiz). People who call them "OEM skins" instead of OEM frameworks don't realize that there's a lot more than a theme there.
I prefer debloated Touchwiz, mainly for the motion movements, and other cool things.
And Google Maps fucked up for me, I couldn't get get out of the search even after spamming the back button or the Maps button.
Hey, Glass is supposed to have a glasses-mounted module out by the end of the year. Hot holiday item, anyone?

I hate how whenever I turn off imo and I get back on the internet, it jumps back on and my phone lags like shit because of all of the incoming messages...

To be fair, most of the "Friends" I talk to over Skype or whatever are people off the Internet around the world. No one I really know in my area talks to me. I don't even have text messaging for my phone plan.

I actually met one of them at a convention I went to last weekend without even knowing it. Pretty insane tbh

More Cores=Better Device duh! (not really), if carriers and OEMs didn't have to add so much stuff onto the devices (I.E AT&T),AT&T added their own contact app on top of the stock contact app, it wouldn't need an absurd amount of cores. Also you'd probably laugh at a comment on XDA, the person thought that the E in E-IPS stands for Economical.
Oh and Xperia Zs in different regions have different displays from Sharp or JDI/JDC, there's a thread on XDA seeing where and what display people have.

Sense 4's lock screen looked a bit archaic, but Sense 5's lockscreen is so nice. Really like the minimalist weather widget and the unlock animation.
Looking for a new Android phone. I'm keen for a Nexus 4, anything better or is it a good choice?
Wait for the Galaxy S4 announcement first.

I like TouchWiz because of all the functionality it adds.
So I have had my new sim card in my phone for a day, battery life on 3g has Improved by a huge amount, about 60%. No idea how it has managed that with a new sim. Sure the coverage is better but I didn't expect a battery life increase by this much.

We had a 3g Samsung flip phone back when 3g was hot new shit
When you used a 2g sim, the battery was horseshit, calls randomly dropped, and the best part of all:
The Java games were unplayably laggy
All because of a sim card :V

you use more battery when your signal is low
or something

Uh, the phone reads the SIM information when it is inserted, it's like an ID card. It doesn't constantly read it to work. There should be no connection between newer SIM and signal strength
