That's a bid
Artificially limiting products so that you can sell the same thing under another name for more money should be illegal
Ok, only a certain batch of dies are actually good (50-70%), so they lock it down so they can sell more and it would be cheaper for the consumer because they don't use only good dies.

I'm like one of those Chinese pirate copy factories.
Anyone wants to buy genuine 6970's?
Linus did a video on this

Ordered a XFX 6950 a few hours ago. I think I'll still wait a month or two to do this trick, I'm still thinking it's going to fry alot of cards.

will post results on unlocking + benchies!
[editline]30th December 2010[/editline]
OH HOLY BEJESUS IT WORKED, benchmarks in a minute or 10.
A friend of mine got an XFX 6950 the other day that didn't unlock well. It ran really good, but started freezing up and stuff.
Shouldn't be too common, and I suspect there are many HD 6950s that are nearly perfect for the unlock but keep in mind that this doesn't always work.
Results are in:
Using Unigine heaven benchmark on all high 4x AA and AF with extreme tesselation on 1920x1080
Un-unlocked: avg fps 24.8 score 624
Unlocked + powertune: avg fps 27.4 score 691
Hot damn, that's quite the improvement for 5 minutes work and $100 saved!
By the way, mine was an Asus and it unlocked no problem. No graphical glitches during the benchmarks either!

If you guys are genuinely interested, could you add me to Steam, DrFire08?
Intel and AMD do the same shit.... Hopefully Nvidia will never pull this shit.

They already do, they just make sure to always set the eFuses before release.
I wish I had some money to get one of those.
And even then, my current setup would bottleneck it horribly.

The GTX 465.
Intel and AMD do the same shit.... Hopefully Nvidia will never pull this shit.
why? there's no reason not to do it if the other CPU/GPUs aren't suitable for being fully unlocked
they don't lose all the profit from that CPU/GPU and their customers get a wider variety of products, I don't see what's wrong
Intel and AMD do the same shit.... Hopefully Nvidia will never pull this shit.
AMD and Nvidia have done this for quite awhile, it's just that you haven't been able to unlock them before.
And again, these are different cards for a reason.
And again, these are different cards for a reason.
possibly, but probably not. it's cheaper to machine one set of cards (a 4650 costs the same amount to produce as a 6970 just saying) and lock half via the bios than it is to machine two different sets.
Locking features on purpose is the stupidest fucking thing I have ever heard of. The whole computer industry makes me sad.

Make them all "full" cards and set the price in the middle of the "two".

Why? They would make less money.

That doesn't make sense from a corporate perspective, and wouldn't be good for the consumer either. The point of having multiple cards is to meet the many varying financial abilities of the consumers.

Yeah but it's still fucking retarded.

no seriously the point is to make as much money as possible and they genuinely don't give a shit about their customers beyond whether or not they're buying the product
If it makes amd feel any better I'm proud with my 6970 purchase.
I'm surprised the Chinese have not cloned high-end video cards yet. They would make lots of cash by selling them cheap.

why did you rate me agree, I'm arguing against you
