• Buying new UPS - Help

APC is the best from personal experience for a UPS. I've got a Smart-UPS 1500 on my desk here and it can keep my PC, Monitors, Speakers, Phone, Router and Printer on for 40/50 mins after power failure and the devices only ever use 2/5 of it's maximum load. UPS are good to have, but not exactly practical for personal use due to the cost, I have mine due to an excess at work and getting it free until they need it. But sure, if you've got the cash available go ahead and get one. For just a single computer I'd recommend one of the lower-end APC ones.
is the 450W APC one powerful enough for my stuff?
Do you know how many watts your PC is actually using out of the 500W available? 450W UPS would be cutting it close with the monitor and anything else also attached.

My PC isn't that great, and I don't have two monitors, two video cards, etc.
uhh, why not? everyone here obviously owns a PC and a lot of people buy UPSs for safety.
I'd only buy one for a data(base) server, or mission critical workstation. Then again, I'm just keeping it real :eng101:
I really don't see why a individual would need a UPS
I really don't see why a individual would need a UPS
I live in Florida, and we have a lot of lightning/storms here.
I really don't see why a individual would need a UPS
Its real helpful if you're in an area that gets constant power outages. Where I live we get wicked thunderstorms in the summer and all the power surges and outages are no good for computers. These UPS solutions aren't for powering your computer for hours on end without electricity or anything, mine only lasts about 9 minutes with 2 computers, 2 monitors, a switch, router and modem. Only long enough to make sure everything is powered down or keep it running if the lights flicker during a storm.
I live in Florida, and we have a lot of lightning/storms here.
APC makes decent UPS units. They're expensive, but they've been used in almost all server installations I've seen. Or you could buy a used one with a dead 12volt gel battery, and replace the battery with a ordinary 12volt car battery.
No one here is going to have experience with UPSs.
I do. Just make sure that the wattage of the ups is equal or greater than the wattage of the power supply.
