puppy linux is really cool
That is, of course, a reference to the great text editor schism (sometimes even known as a war) from which originates the statement that emacs is a good operating system that lacks a decent text editor.
(Unlike the GRUB instance, however, the emacs case can be allayed with viper or evil, or by running vi[m]? under emacs)
[editline]31st October 2012[/editline]
I wonder if there are people who seriously run emacs as their shell
This is absolutley hysterical, I wish I'd started into linux sooner because the more I learn the better it gets.
Have anyone tried League Of Legends on Linux? - Sometimes i play it with my friends, so I wan't to know how good it can run!

Also looking around for some Photoshop alternatives (or as close as it can be) for Linux, all I am hearing is GIMP but really. Is this the only option? bah.
There is a port of Paint.net but you're not going to get a good alternative of photoshop anyway.

Just get used to GIMP. It's only obfuscated because you're probably used to photoshop.
Engadget popped out a reasonably reasonable guide on picking a WM, what do you guys think? http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/30/how-to-picking-a-window-manager-linux/
Only 4 choices, not really a comprehensive guide.
I have a windows 7 VM setup, I use it to run office and photoshop when I need them (which is not often). I also sometimes use it when samba decides to flip shit like there's no tomorrow and everything stops working.

So, FluxBox is a choice but Openbox isn't. Nice one engadget.
After spending a frusterating night with Crunchbang's alsa having audio through the speakers while headphones were plugged in, I decided to try another debian-based distro. Any ideas? Or any other distros not neccisaraly debian?
[editline]31st October 2012[/editline]
Fuck it, I'll do a debian netinstall in the morning. Hopefully it runs with my wacky Conexant sound card... If that doesn't work, I'll do ubuntu 12. Otherwise, WINDOWS7FOREVER. fuck im tired

I can't use photoshop anymore because that i'm used to GIMP.
Help me, guys... MATE borked.
There are no panels and preferred apps do not launch.
It's probably an issue with mate-conf.

I can't. It's just an empty desktop with a few icons. :L
Whatever. Disregard these two posts from now. I'll use KDE.

Arch Linux news:
ConsoleKit replaced by logind
With GNOME 3.6, polkit and networkmanager moving to [extra], ConsoleKit has now been removed from the repositories. Any package that previously depended on it now relies on systemd-logind instead. That means that the system must be booted with systemd to be fully functional.
In addition to GNOME, both KDE and XFCE are also affected by this change.
Edit: rate me late, I haven't updated my system a week ago
Just switched over to systemd on my productive workstation at my workplace.
I'm glad everything went well.
So, I just installed Fedora (as I ran brokend on my arch system) and
where the hell is fish
why the hell doesn't it have nano
why does it ignore my keyboard layout settings

I have this really odd problem with pcmanfm. My pcmanfm doesn't show my usb stick. It used to do it a while back, but no it's all kind of fucked.
The arch wiki doesn't say anything about this. The bug tracker has nothing. I think the problem is related to udisks and polkit.
I can manually mount the drive using udisks. Once I do that it actually shows up in pcmanfm, and I can unmount it with the unmount button.
Another odd thing is that pcmanfm shows me the smb shares I have defined in /etc/fstab.
On my laptop, I removed consolekit. The problem is still there. In fact, I have had this problem for a while now.
Any pcmanfm users, do you get anything like this? If you don't, what's your configuration/setup/etc?

Works fine for me on Sabayon, no need to configure anything it's just perfect out of the box. I haven't used Arch for a long while, so I'm not familiar with the new system it uses, although I'm recreating it on my Sabayon box. I hope you get it working :)
I am trying to use thunar to replace pcmanfm. It seems like the problem where my SMB shares are displayed is there as well. I have also installed gvfs. Thunar and pcmanfm are still not working properly.
Just got around to install MATE, any recommendations? I mean, this theme is ugly as hell! I looked trough the themes but none suits me, got any good ones? [sp]and how to install them because i really suck[/sp] - This default look is killing me :suicide:

I think it has also GTK 2 support.
To install it, go to Appareance, click on themes tab, and click install, then select the tar.gz that got downloaded. If this doesnt work, place the folders (FlatStudioDark, etc.) inside .themes folder.
Allright, this is really odd. The problem seems to originate from somewhere other than thunar or pcmanfm. I installed gvfs and tried to find see what was going on. It seems that gvfs has the same problem as the two file managers. It only lists the damned smb shares, and when I mount my disk manually, it can see it.
According to the Arch wiki pcmanfm uses udisks or gvfs or god knows what. Both are listed IDK how it switches or which it uses.
Thunar uses gvfs.
gvfs should be using udisks2.
All of these, in some way depend on udev, polkit or udisks.
It's probably not a permission issue with polkit because I can manually mount everything through udisks (1 and 2) and through gvfs.
It might be a problem with udisks, in the way it reports the usb drives and somehow can only report whatever is in fstab and is not mounted.
It could be the same problem with udev, where udev labels the usb stick as something udisks shouldn't display.
It doesn't help that half of the Arch wiki is now either wrong or slightly off on anything remotely related to a base system, because people didn't have time to update the articles for systemd.
