Have the Atheros 5K wifi drivers been removed? The mPCIe card I bought in 2008 no longer works with Kernel 3.0+ for some reason, and I thought going with an Atheros chip was the most recommended chipset for Ubuntu.
The ath5k driver should still be in kernel.

My system isn't initializing the card. It's detected in ifconfig, but won't turn on. (It's wlan0, and typing in sudo ifconfig wlan0 up does nothing.) And yes, I've tried every combination with the hardware switch too. (Fn + F3)

Should I use Arch64 or Ubuntu?
I like Arch because:
- I can install my own DE (mainly this)
- It is rolling release
I dislike Arch because:
- I can break things easily. I'll probably blow up my Windows Partition and be sad because I lost all of my programming projects, screenshots, music, time wasted DLing things on Steam etc.
I like Ubuntu because:
- It's hard for me to accidentally break things; stuff is setup for me already
- It's got a large community and is one of the most popular distros. Support!
I dislike Ubuntu because:
- It is not rolling release. Things become out of date.
- As far as I know, uninstalling a DE completely is difficult.

If your only dislike with Arch is that you can easily break it, then I'd say you learn a bit more about Arch and go with it. In the end, it'll totally be worth it.
I was wondering, what dock is the best one for KDE 4.8?
It would fit with my new setup for my desktop.
kooldock? I am not sure actually, i wan't to be able to change the icon and fiddle around with it.

Wen't with Cairo Dock

You could try Arch in a VM to get used to it first.

You can install and uninstall DEs easily in both, and the only moment you can break something in Arch that you can't in Ubuntu is during setup.

Very unique. It's actually fairly impressive how lightweight it can be on resources (Xorg plus just the WM only take up about 200MB of RAM) while staying pretty much fully featured. It's basically a window manager with pretty much any feature you could ask for - It's stupidly easy to theme, it's very expandable with modules, has a built in file manager, a built-in application launcher and file locator (which is also expandable), and also looks quite nice with subtle eye candy.
The only problem is that it's been in development for aeons, never had an official release. Arch has SVN snapshots built every so often, though.
What do you mean by widgets?

wicd doesn't display widgets? Huh?
I mean buttons etc. I was asking because changing my gtk theme wasn't affecting it but for some reason the changes took place after a restart.

i checked kdm log at /var/log/kdm.log
/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdm_greet: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXi.so.6: undefined symbol: _XGetRequest
and i had this error at the log..

btw, while upgrading pacman asked me if i want to replace
these packages:
mach64-dri mga-dri r128-dri savage-dri sis-dri tdfx-dri
with extra/libgl for some reason..

Welcome to rolling release.
It looks like Arch shipped a newer version of KDM that depends on a newer version of libXi than what Arch has on their repos.

Those are video drivers for really old video cards, I think those drivers were removed from a recent version of Mesa.

There's a git version of libXi in AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=18975
I want to setup a VM to have as a webserver/git repo/general server to practice and mess around on but my laptop isnt the best so I want a lightweight distro, I was thinking of going with arch or are there any better solutions?
I have just installed arch in virtual box but I cant get the networking to work, I have tried both NAT and Bridged mode. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

There's lots of things you can do; I added you on steam so we can work it out, but for now you can try to find a way to add an ethernet device through your VM. Then follow instructions from the arch wiki here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Configuring_Network#Device_Driver

What exactly have you tried?
Aha, messed aroundwith some rc.conf settings and it seems to be working now :)
sorry for my newby-ness
Is there a good GUI for Pacman similar to Ubuntu Software Center?
Is there a good GUI for Pacman similar to Ubuntu Software Center?
terminal :v:
I've asked this before but, should I really repair my disc, repartition and change my bootloader again? Or can I just tell arch to use my existing partition, that would make my life a lot simpler
Is there a good GUI for Pacman similar to Ubuntu Software Center?
Nope, write your own if you want one.
How would a GUI make pacman any better?
How would a GUI make pacman any better?
More people would be attracted to using Arch Linux I suppose?
More people would be attracted to using Arch Linux I suppose?
If they can't use pacman without a GUI they shouldn't be using Arch.

packagekit has some gui available, was decent when I tried it out
Hey, guys. I've never used linux before and I've got an old laptop that's collecting dust, thinking about formatting it and putting linux on it and use it for school. What distro would be perfect for someone new to linux to start off with? I'm not computer illiterate (if that's useful to know).

Nobody seems to read the thread version... why even have one? (:v:)
[editline]18th March 2012[/editline]
Seriously though, I've had no complaints with Arch and it's my first linux install ever.
Use Arch unless you feel lazy and just want a working computer with no effort at all.
