General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. Install Arch
It's possible the disk had some residual GUID Partition Tables just laying around, and when you cfdisked it, you merely replaced the legacy/protective MBR. Parted uses GPT so it could've recognized the GPT and ignored the MBR. If you messed around with parted, the partition tables got borked even more. Upon running syslinux install the tables were so thoroughly buttdestroyed that the install had no idea whether the system was using MBR or GPT and it likely just decided to shred the tables and shit all over the hard drive
[editline]31st October 2012[/editline]
The moral of the story: don't use both cfdisk and parted.
So you mean I have to wipe the entire disk with cfdisk and use nothing else? Arch wiki told me that parted uses both MBR and GPT, and I think the only place where GPT stuff could be is on my "work" ntfs partition which had a linux install inside a .vhd file that I've deleted a week ago.
holy shit fish is amazing.
even better than zsh.
But very few people support fish and it's weird variables
Okay, got it working!
Boot flag was not set through parted
Edit: Now I have a working, first ever 64-bit desktop on my main PC! Thanks for the help through.
EDIT2: HOLY SHIT SOUND IS WORKING TOO AS IT SHOULD!!! (thanks to my new asus mobo)
OpenGL stuff also has more FPS in bigger resolutions than on windows 7 with default settings!!
hey guys i know this is a linux thread but i think/hope my question can be answered by you guys too.
i need to "disable anonymous ftp" in solaris 10.
is this reliable?
echo "guestserver" >> /etc/ftpd/ftpaccess
Then try ftp as anonymous ,you will get error message like below
$ftp serverip
Connected to T2000 FTP server ready
User (129.227.159.23:(none)): anonymous
530 Guest login not allowed on this machine.
Connection closed by remote host.
$
is there a simple way to do it, preferably not adding anything to ftpaccess?
i know svcadm disable ftp works but it disable the whole ftp, something i do not want.

Not for 64 Bit users it isn't.

I use arch 64-bit, and have no problems with it

Currently using it on a 64bit system. Why is it bad for x64?
If I have to use a proxy that blocks certain websites and I also want to use a VPN at the same time, is there a way I can have both agree and use the VPN? I have a VPN configured and it doesn't work on this proxy.

Depends on what you mean by VPN:
If you're using OpenVPN, you have to use the http-proxy directive in your client config file.
If you're using anything else (especially PPTP) stop using it and use OpenVPN.
rekonq browser identification is the best thing in the existence

I need to find a good GTK2/3 and maybe openbox theme. I used to use Shiki-brave, which looks great, I now tried Zukitwo-Brave which is ok-ish but has some really fucked up parts to it.
I need something easy on the eyes and that works with both gtk2 and 3.
Any ideas?
I've been using Albatross for a while; it doesn't have an openbox theme, but it should be hard to find a match.

There's also blue and grey variants if that's what you prefer.
Ok I caved. I'm downloading Linux Mint 13 (Cinnamon, 64bit) now.
Planning on doing a triple-boot with OSX and Windows 8.
If I end up liking it, which I likely will (only reason I disliked Ubuntu is because it's badly bloated), then it'll be:
OSX for iPhone dev stuff and Mac-exclusive JB tools. Basically I'll rarely use it because it sucks balls.
Windows for gaming or for applications specific to Windows.
Linux Mint for daily use, provided the web browser and flash behave, and provided it has good power management that'll get me the same 7 hours OSX and Windows 8 get me.
Fingers crossed.

Linux has never been great at power management when it comes to laptops, but it might be the same or even better with Jupiter.

Just wait patiently for Luna and you will see the real meaning of "Energy Saving".
Anyone got any tips on making Wacom tablets work on Linux Mint 12?

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:doctormo/wacom-plus
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wacom-dkms
then reboot
Well I'm getting an assload of trouble installing Linux Mint. It doesn't like that my laptop has two GPUs (discreet Intel/AMD). It just hangs when booting. Tried nomodeset among other things but it's not working. Not a good start.
Someone was asking for someone with LFS experience, which I have.

Disable one or the other in BIOS and see if you can boot from there

I wish but this is a MacBook Pro. There is no BIOS. :(

Either I really blow at researching or I'm just being unlucky. I've researched this issue on Google and it doesn't seem anybody has a fix that works. Which is odd considering the popularity of these laptops. I doubt I'm the only person out there with a MacBook Pro with 2 GPUs that wants Linux.

When I installed Arch on my MBP the only issue with the 2 GPU's was that I could only use the integrated GPU.
Anyone got experience with getting the Arch installer to boot as an EFI app? I can start the EFI shell fine, but when I go to launch the installer app it just hard-hangs the system with a non-flashing _

What's wrong with L2TP/IPSEC ?

Normally if you're using a VPN (and routing your traffic through it) you shouldn't need a proxy at all and a proxy will not hinder you. Perhaps a firewall is blocking your VPN connection from being completed? Or if you're behind NAT there are extra things that must be considered. Let us know more about the setup.
