I do like the looks of those WMs, but i'm kinda scared of testing them out. Are they easy to configure?
Yes. sudo apt-get install openbox obconf obmenu tint2 nitrogen lxappearance and optionally Conky and Menumaker It took me maybe 20 minutes to get my install to look like it does. [editline]4th December 2012[/editline] Use the openbox configuration page on the Archwiki if you get stuck, it's rather informative.
Does anyone here still use awesomeWM? I haven't been around lately because I installed Windows 8 when Arch shat on itself. I'm thinking of getting Debian unstable next. I don't trust Arch anymore.

I'd just like to figure out how to add things to start automatically without using a script.
Yes. sudo apt-get install openbox obconf obmenu tint2 nitrogen lxappearance and optionally Conky and Menumaker
I recommend aptitude over apt-get
I recommend aptitude over apt-get
The differences aren't really that critical, especially in this case But yes, aptitude is generally better long term
But yes, aptitude is generally better long term
People always say that but I've never heard a single actual reason for it. So, any examples?
People always say that but I've never heard a single actual reason for it. So, any examples?
It's better at managing dependencies. [editline]4th December 2012[/editline] But to be fair, apt-get has autoremove which does the same thing.
I'm sitting here, i have downloaded Super Meat Boy from my humble bundle 4. The file is a .bin. When i double click it it says "not executeable". So i set it to be one, but when i double click nothing happens, no error no boot. Am i being stupid?
Recently tried to install Linux everyone I tried had the same problem. 'Nouveau gpu lock up' Tried Mint, Ubuntu, Kubuntu and another few that I can't remember. My GPU is a GTX 580. I've had Linux working on my PC before, don't know what the problem is :/ Any ideas?
just do ./supermeatboy* in terminal and it should work that is if you set it to be executable
I've set it as executeable, renamed the file to "supermeatboy" , i placed the file in my home folder and i do:
./supermeatboy
All i get it: "No such file or directory"
Install the proprietary nvidia drivers, Noveau is garbage for now.
How do I do that without installing/booting into Linux?
-bad reading- [editline]4th December 2012[/editline]
How do I do that without installing/booting into Linux?
Hold shift while booting in to mint and choose root command line or w/e, then install from there [editline]4th December 2012[/editline] I'm also certain you could just use your integrated card if you have one to install them
Does anyone here still use awesomeWM? I haven't been around lately because I installed Windows 8 when Arch shat on itself. I'm thinking of getting Debian unstable next. I don't trust Arch anymore.
I only ever use awesome. sadly I can't really use any other wm since I've gotten so used to how awesome is and how it works.
I should really use a tiling WM instead of XFCE or Openbox. Considering the way I work it's only logical to use a tiling WM. I just wish I could get used to them. I've pretty much tried them all except Xmonad. Do you think I should give that a go for a week?
So I done 'sudo apt-get install nvidia-common' and it seemed to work so I restarted it and still the same problem. Removing nouveau didn't work either. Might try making it use my integrated graphics, how do about this?

Change the permissions to make it executable.
chmod +x yourfileofchoice
So I managed to install Linux Mint but I'm still getting the same problem. Holding shift while booting does nothing. It also says: '[DRM] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: Failed to idle channel 1. [DRM] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO - playlist update failed' Then the same again but with 2 instead of one.

If I try to start Xorg with the open source drivers it just hangs for a minute and then displays corrupted memory to the screen (I get random pixels, mainly purples and whites in semi-blocky patters) I'm not sure how to get proprietary drivers in Ubuntu/Mint, but in Arch it's a fairly simple matter (shameless arch recommendation)

First you get the novelty factor, which lasts a few days max. After, you hit a wall of "this is so damn tiring, I feel like I'm resisting using a gui all the time!" Once you get past that stage, it becomes natural to use and it's great. I believe in you.

So I'm not the only one whose computer Nouvaeu doesn't work for..Good to know.
We can form a tiling support group(!) Any slogan pitches?
I've only tried one Tiling WM: Awesome. I've used it for more than 3 months straight, configured it the way I liked it, and I loved it-- when it worked properly. 20% of the move-window-clicks I make gets the window stuck to the cursor until I attempt to close it, maximized chrome can avoid the window manager entirely (getting stuck on screen, unclosable, unresizeable, un-unmaximizeable, persisting through workspaces), and many many small annoying things happened frequently. I really love the idea of a tiling window manager and I enjoy using one, but can someone recommend a good tiling window manager where I don't have to manually program it to work correctly?
i3 is pretty cool. maybe gonna try out WMFS2 for my Notebook at work.
How do you make those shorcut like bars in openbox?

I'm rather glad I now only have this trivial question to ask, having gotten it working now. How do I get Chrome and Firefox to use the mouse scroll (where you click the middle button and move the mouse pointer to scroll) when I click the scroll wheel? Using Mint 14 Cinnamon. EDIT: Is it called click scrolling? I honestly can't remember.
