General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. Install Arch

I don't want to be an asshole, but why are we explaining to someone how to install a distro that is clearly way over their head?
Maybe we should focus on fixing his GPU problems that he'll still have when running on Arch.
Well, it's dwm so there isn't any "panel" so to speak. It's beastie's config which is located here.
I've also been using i3 for the past couple of hours while I work and I must say, I love it. There is only one thing that annoys me though. Whenever I open a program e.g. firefox i3 decides to open it the whole way across both my screens and that's obviously not what I want. Is there any way to change this?
I'm almost certain you can assign workspaces to monitors, i.e. you say workspaces 1-5 are on your first monitor and 6-0 are on your second. If I had two monitors that is how I would want it set up, so I could monitor things on one while working in another. I'm not sure why i3 would split a windows across multiple but that might be a xinerama thing(?)

So this happened.

Managed to get Linux Mint working. Went into recovery mode and booted from there then done ctrl-alt-f1 and done this :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
Rebooted and it worked. :)
Using dwm and I'm very happy so far, it's very speedy and acts the way I expect it to. Configuring it through compiling is actually a very clever way to customize.
Hitting the dilemma of if I should even have a desktop manager again though. I always regret trying to only use a window manager due to problems with console kit and pretty notifyd messages.
Hopefully with consolekit replaced by systemd/logind I'll have some better luck this time.
[editline]asdf[/editline]
Oh what do you know, it works perfectly. Yay logind!
Ubuntu keeps hanging up on reboot. It doesn't occur when I'm not using SLiM at all and seems to occur less frequently if I've logged out of my WM. The last lines in SLiM's log prior to this session are:
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.
slim: unexpected signal 15
slim: waiting for X server to shut down
I had to REISUB to reboot but that probably didn't cause the sigterm visible in the log.
Any ideas?

sudo reboot via a terminal emulator from the WM causes it to hang invariably.
Closing the WM and doing sudo reboot from some other tty doesn't alway hang.
Does anyone know of a decent, advanced video editor? By "advanced" I mean not a windows movie maker clone.
Cinelerra is pretty much what I'm looking for, but it's really unstable and slow to render.

Novice linux user here and I need some help using wget.
Basically, I have an online course at my college and would like to go through and download all of the files and information for future reference, so I want wget to essentially go in and create an exact copy of the class site that I can view offline at any time.
Exporting my cookies from firefox and putting them into wget, I was able to get it to actually make a copy of the index page... but any link beyond that redirected to the login screen and it seems that wget wouldn't download anything else because it didn't/couldn't log in on its own. On top of that, none of the links redirected to offline pages; they all pointed to the online version which obviously won't help when I get locked out next week. I know that the pages downloaded (because I could manually open their HTML files which all were the login page) but there was no way to actually get to them because the links didn't convert.
How can I get wget to automatically log in while making all of the links convert to point to the local html files?

Cheers, I'll try it out.

-k converts absolute links to relative, iirc
How are you "putting cookes into wget"? You could try --header "Cookie: this=that"
Hey guys, I'm having a sort of problem and the guys on the Android thread won't help me since this is rather more Linux-wise.
My audio balance is messed up (the right earphone has less volume than the left one) and I'm very sure it's a software problem. I have Busybox installed.
I've ran alsa_amixer and it returned this:
# alsa_amixer
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined penum
Playback channels: Mono
Limits: Playback -50 - 16
Mono: Playback 0 [76%]
Simple mixer control 'device',1
Capabilities: volume volume-joined penum
Playback channels: Mono
Capture channels: Mono
Limits: 0 - 25
Mono: 0 [0%]
I am sure that the PCM's Playback value in the square brackets should be 50%. So I run:
alsa_amixer -c 0 sset 'PCM' 50%,50% //based on a tutorial I found
And then I get this:
# alsa_amixer -c 0 sset 'PCM' 50%,50%
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined penum
Playback channels: Mono
Limits: Playback -50 - 16
Mono: Playback -17 [50%]
And then I use "alsa_ctl store" to store the information to asound.state.
Then I reboot the phone and the changes don't persist, and to check if the settings work, I have to reboot.
So I'm asking you, fellow companions; how do I make the changes persist?
I'm trying to see if i can make a little Minetest server working on my old shit laptop with Lubuntu running from an USB key, if you're interested the address is notthebees.no-ip.org and the port is 30001, Minetest version 0.4.3.
Here we go, Linux mint and now getting my AMD drivers. I hope it won't buttfuck me and set my resolution back to something about 800x600 again, it's too ugly for my 1920x1080. :v:
[editline]6th December 2012[/editline]
Oh look it buttfucked me yet again!
Fuck this, new distro exploration time.
[editline]6th December 2012[/editline]
I'm sitting here with Crunchbang, because why not.
Why doesn't it get wireless right from install? I can't chose my wireless network? Any assistance? I tried googling it but no luck.
[editline]6th December 2012[/editline]
Ah, i think it's because i didn't get BPO.
Last post, sorry Linuxer's!
Got into the steam for linux beta!
Also got in.
I didn't :(
I didn't :(
You aren't missing nothing but TF2 Beta.

If you are willing to wait a while, Lightworks for linux is in closed alpha and it appears a version of it will always remain free. I used it for windows a while back, and even only scratching the surface it seems really powerful. It might be overkill, but once it is out on Linux I expect it will blow away most of the competition.

Killing Floor is great fun :(
I got the invite too, but i can't install it because HP created a fuckton of additionals partitions that saturate the partiton table and that can't be erased if i don't burn 5 fucking DVDs or put everything in an USB key with more than 18 GB. Fuck you HP, you're a sack of putrid steaming shit, i hope you drown in a sea of dicks and get stoned with fucking LEGO bricks made of lead.
Can't you just dban the thing and reinstall
Killing Floor is great fun :(
Well, in my case, I don't have it, so :(

I just installed Lubuntu with WUBI and managed to avoid the blank screen with acpi=off. Fucking ATI and HP.
I also forgot this:

Okay turns out I got the beta access but that it came later than for some other guys in here.
The terrifying thing is that now I have to make that AYIM LP I promised my friends I'd do and I fucking hate that game.
Yelling shall ensue.
Just got my email as well :woot:
I got in as well.
I've been getting the dreaded wacky cursor bug.
I know the fix is to set the default theme to the right thing. My problem is that I want the default black xorg cursor. I can't seem to find the name of this damned theme for the life of me.
Any one of you guys know what it could be?

Same issue here, not sure which is the default, so I'm just using the one the wiki recommends.

You mean the bare Xorg cursor? Just set your index.theme (should be in /usr/share/icons/default) to Inherits=core. If you mean the black one that comes with GNOME, just install the DMZ cursor theme.
Man this is so stupid. I would have complacently wiped windows of my machine if i could play planetside 2 (which this one actually works ok), tribes:acend and farcry 3 on it. These 3 games are literary the only things holding me back from doing that.
I've got most of my library tethering me to Windows, sadly
while some of it probably would work in Wine theoretically, I've already mentioned my opinions on Wine, and even without those opinions I wouldn't trust Bethbryo not to completely corrupt its assets trying to load a dialogue line if I tried to run it in Wine.
