General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. Install Arch
4,946 replies, posted
Well it seems as much as I like Windows 8 my laptop keeps having problems.
Torn between going back to arch, or trying out something simple like Linux Mint Cinnamon. Though I may just go arch then install cinnamon...
Still need some help with my laptop. I installed the base system off the live CD by following this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide
When I'm running off the live CD, both ethernet and wireless works fine. When I'm running off what I installed, nothing works. When i do "ip addr" i only get the loopback interface. What have I done wrong?

Thanks, that fixed it.
Edit: Actually, problem is still there. "wifi-menu eth0" works, and I found my wifi, but for some reason, I can't bring eth0 up.
Edit2: What the fuck, it works now. Ran netcfg <wifi config>, and now its up, despite getting an error saying "nl80211 driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands".

I had issues installing cinnamon on arch, couldn't get one of the dependencies to install.
Might give it another shot tonight.

Cinnarch?
Cinnarch?
That would be easier, I've already installed everything though.

eth0 is for ethernet, you need to use wlan0 for wifi.
eth0 is for ethernet, you need to use wlan0 for wifi.
Usually wlan0 anyway. Some cards use ath0, ra0 or even wlan1 (even though wlan0 isn't taken)
Some cards use eth1
It's horrible
[editline]14th December 2012[/editline]
Or rather, some drivers do

You know what's even more horrible?
My wireless broadcom-sta drivers use eth0.
Not at all relevant but starting from wlan1 made me think of this xkcd comic:
eth0 is for ethernet, you need to use wlan0 for wifi.
For some reason, both the wireless and ethernet were being named as ethX, alternating every so often. I fixed it with udev rules now though.
Apparently the newest ipw2200 drivers aren't great, but it's working for now. Got it all set up and automated with netcfg.
So I figured I might as well give Cinnarch a go.
Worst decision ever.
Everything is breaking, EVERYTHING.
I couldn't get grub to install correctly so I installed it all manually, went to install grub and pacman was broken.
fml, back to regular arch.

Why does steam for linux always crash my internet connection?
[editline]14th December 2012[/editline]
Works for a few minutes, and then *poof* internet gone.
I got minecraft running on my old laptop, but I'm not sure if i have hardware accelerated openGL or not. Is there a command I can use to check this in some way? I'm using xfce4 as my DE.
Edit: Turns out I had acceleration. Found out by uninstalling some driver and breaking everything :v:

If it's playable then it's probably hardware accelerated.

Poettearch or sysvarch?
But you really should try out gupnp-tools and see if you can get a port "forwarded" to you using that, it would interest me for educational reasons.
How do i use that?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong thread to post in, but it's a small linux question, so here goes. The EDID on my main monitor is broken, so ubuntu is recognising it as a generic monitor. I have the EDID in .raw format, but I need help editing Xorg.conf. Here's the text from the thread, It just goes into a bit more detail. Sorry if this is out of place.
I've read over almost everything I could find in order to solve this, but to no avail. I'm having trouble with my main monitor in my dual monitor setup, that has a default res of 1620x1200. However, I'm unable to use this resolution because the EDID on the monitor broke a while back, and Ubuntu is just recognizing it as a generic monitor. I've tried forcing the resolution through other means, but nothing has worked. I've retrieved the EDID from the windows registry as per this guide (I have a dual boot), and I'm wondering if anyone would be able to help me in using this with my main monitor. I'm pretty new at this, so any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but it seemed like it. Please move it if it's wrong.

Exactly what I thought. Should've used the latest Ubuntu colorscheme to relate to the Linux community more.
No matter what I do, I can't seem to mark my boot partition as active. I have tried fdisk cfdisk and parted to no avail.
[editline]15th December 2012[/editline]
Fdisk worked now. Syslinux is broken though :(

try changing all instances of "DFP-2" in your xorg.conf to "DVI-I-3" (I'm assuming that's the target monitor, since it only has "800x600" in the supported resolutions)

they might just have that as a generic "web browser" graphic
Decided I might try turning redshift off today to see if I really need it still.
