I have my Ubuntu 12.10 in german. So the tab Additional drivers tells you on nvidia which driver version it is.. However with my HD 7950 it only says AMD graphics accelerators of fglrx are used and Video drivers for the AMD graphics accelerators of fglrx-updates are being used. So what does that exactly mean? Also are the amd drivers really that shit on linux? I thought they were open source.
For the two biggest GPU vendors, nvidia and amd, there's two kind of drivers: Proprietary (closed source) and open source. nvidia-drivers and fglrx are closed source, while nouveau and "xf86-video-ati" are open.
Well I have made the move over to Ubuntu on my PC. Sadly unity is making everything seem squashed on my 1024x786 display.
I was just testing around, you could try installing gnome?
BRIAENIRJUAENIRANWJId I tried installing Ubuntu, that went fine. Then I disliked the whole Unity netbook look. I installed Gnome3 fallback or whatever it's called. Then I realised I didn't have the NVIDIA drivers which I then started installing... Now it's all in the gutter. The resolution is 640x480. nvidia-settings tells me I have to run nvidia-xconfig, I do that and the file changes it's settings. I restart, nothing happens. It's the same settings but it still doesn't work. I used nvidia-current and nvidia-current-updates (or whatever it's called). I also had the linux-headers etc.

Just spent my first couple of hours with Linux, I must say, it's been great so-far, and fast. Might post here if I have any issues since we have so many experienced users.
Feel free to post about any issues we have, the rest of FP won't be of much help
Also if you're on Arch (or a derivative) always consult the wiki first.
Also if you're on Arch (or a derivative) always consult the wiki first.
and of course, read the manuals for the application if you get stuck with it
And check the GNU info pages.
And check the GNU info pages.
Navigating info is such hell that I'd advise you just find the HTML manuals instead since they're literally the same thing in an easier form
Navigating info is such hell that I'd advise you just find the HTML manuals instead since they're literally the same thing in an easier form
It was a joke :v: a cruel, cruel joke. I think everyone needs to take a look at the info pages to fully appreciate how helpful the man pages really are. [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] Seriously, someone had to have gotten kicked out of the GNU project for those info pages. Does anyone actually use them?

Reinstalled Windows 7 in a dualboot with Ubuntu. Despite getting fedup with Windows I can't live without certain games. Its also a new record for me, five days without playing any games. Drive 1 (80gb) ¬ Partition 1 ( 29.6gb, Ext4, Ubuntu 12.10 ) Partition 2 ( 8gb, Swap ) Partition 3 ( 29.6gb, NTFS, Windows 7 ) Partition 4 ( 8gb, NTFS, Dedicated Swap )
Not particularly relevant, but talk about GNU reminded me about this. [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] “Ed is the standard text editor.” [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] And this line really gets me:
Of course, on the system I administrate, vi is symlinked to ed. Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K; and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!!
Can't really think of a relevant place to put this, but this is why Youtube's new "related videos" section isn't such a great idea:
Openbox is good. Crunchbang isn't as bleeding edge as other distributions, but it's a great distro for anyone that is somewhat new to linux [editline]5th January 2013[/editline] The community is also fantastic.
I know my way around *nix pretty well, love the terminal, but I also love clean design ;P Yeah it did seem to lag behind a bit, I dig it so far though
So I have tried pretty much every DE I can think of and none of them even compared to what I think of Gnome but I had stability issues with it and I can't have that. Don't know what to use.
Our school just changed its policy on electronic devices. Now we can bring laptop/tablets/phones to use for educational purposes at appropriate times, so there is the potential to use my raspberry pi to take notes in class :v: I grabbed the latest images of raspbian and alarmpi and threw them each on an sdcard. My preference is alarmpi because I've only ever used Arch, but it is much slower than raspbian, so I'm biting the bullet and learning debian. I'm spoiled by Arch's minimal install philosophy and instead of being dumped into a root prompt to set up the system I was placed on an lxde desktop with one user account preinstalled called 'pi' and no root password by default. This wouldn't be too much of an imposition if it weren't for the fact that I somehow messed up editing the sudoers file. I'm not sure how exactly, because I assumed visudo would prevent me from saving it with a syntax error, but somehow I unwittingly outsmarted it and borked sudo. So I had to hard-stop it and edit the file on my laptop. I'm not a fan of LXDE so I quickly installed i3 and transferred all of my configuration files and rc's for bash and vim and whatnot. The final step was to install libreoffice, zim and latex so I can take notes effectively. If the battery holds out this is going to be awesome.

I like the fact that you can just swipe up to the top left of the screen and get a list of software and full previews of what is running.
I am trying to make a Windows 7 Live thingy on my USB using UNetbootin. But it gets stuck at 52%. Help?
Got HL Alpha working on linux :v: [t]http://i.imgur.com/3vicF.jpg[/t]
Got HL Alpha working on linux :v: [t]http://i.imgur.com/3vicF.jpg[/t]
how'd you do that, just using WINE?
how'd you do that, just using WINE?
Yep.
Reading through some of the stuff in this thread made me want to try Linux after having the same old Windows XP for years, and I can safely say that I'm never going back. Thanks guys!

I have a weird problem with Ubuntu. Whenever I restart the computer, the purple background appears for like a second, and then my screen turns off. The screen is actually off, without the backlight on. However, if I turn the computer on and off after this, I'm able to boot it with no problems. Whats happening?
So ive abandoned using ubuntu as it was not working correctly for me. Reinstalled 3 times and it would hang on the purple screen/video drivers would crash and i couldnt do shit. So im tossing up between two distros, Lubuntu and Linux mind with the cinnamon desktop interface. What would you guys reccomend?

So good move for him!
