OH I know what's up, the same happened on my laptop. Do "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic" in the console, that should fix it. (Dont forget to reboot)
Oh, and you can still open the console with "CTRL+ALT+TAB"

Thank you very much, that worked. Now I just gotta work out nvidia drivers. Should have just gotten 12.04, always have to have the ~latest version~ cause i'm cooooool
If you're going to reinstall, give Linux Mint a try.
The Cinnamon version is really nice and visually appealing. Also have a look at the KDE and MATE versions.

Which distro works best with nVidia drivers? Everywhere I look the amount of work people are going to just to get the drivers working is so fucking daunting. Also can anybody recommend the best linux alternative to notepad ++? (With abaility to execute, learning Lua and some python)

Would Vim ( If you are partial to a GUI then you can also got gVIm ) and luasupport be what you are looking for? Vim is a pretty ubiquitous editor, and its the only one I use on Linux. I used Notepad++ while writing Lua for GMod while I was running windows, and I can honestly say Vim matches up in every aspect I've noticed.
If not you can look at a more IDE centric editor, but I personally like having a general purpose editor which you can use for just about everything, to which you add plugins for specific tasks.

Ubuntu and Ubuntu derivatives (which includes Linux Mint) generally, but nVidia and ATI drivers on Linux are known to be crap.
Have you tried just sticking to the open source drivers (The ones used by default)?
As for the Notepad++ alternative, try Geany.

Well, the only reason I was on the IDE ttrain of thought was because I wouldn't know how to execute a lua file any other way, I'm a slow learner, and I find it incredibly hard to wrap my head around certain concepts. I'm really liking the look of Vim, lots of great reviews, great customization options and lightweight, winner for me!

Well, earlier in the thread:
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-source
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
sudo apt-get install nvidia-experimental-310
I did this, but the only difference since then is that my resolution options won't go higher that 1024x768 (1440x900 native) and I'm still stumped. So how exactly would I go back to the original ones? Also I am worried more shits gonna get screwed up. I think I bit off more than I could chew installing Linux. Everything just boggles my mind.
Just me bieng over dramatic, disregard, mostly.

On Arch Linux I have never had an Nvidia problem. You just install nvidia normally (pacman -S nvidia) and it tells you to reboot.
Works great.
Um, just open the system settings dialog, click on software sources, then go to the right-most tab (forgot what it's called) and click on the very first driver (the xrog ones), then apply, then reboot.

I've actually never had a driver problem on arch with anything, including ati and nvidia. Ubuntu on the other hand.....
You'd think that the most "noob friendly" distro around would be super compatible, but you would be very wrong.

Come on! I have kept saying, nothing is there, it's blank. Naught. Zero. Before, and after using terminal as mentioned a post above.
nVidia and ATI drivers on Linux are known to be crap.
I've never had major issues with either radeon or nvidia but it pisses me off that nvidia only provides X drivers and you can't even use the nouveau FB driver if you're using it.
Really? I though you said my fix worked... Ok anyway do this: open the terminal and type "gnome-control-center", this should open up the gui for the system settings dialog, then just follow my previous post.

Radeon drivers are notoriously outdated, nVidia's driver supports Xorg 1.14 (which isn't released yet) while fglrx only just supports Xorg 1.13 with their 13.1 driver.

Didn't make a difference.
Did you reboot? Otherwise i have no idea. Try doing "dpkg -l | grep driver" and copy/paste that here.

Plz stop with drama. Just relax man, I spent like 5 hours trying to get uefi to work once before i figured out my hardware was incompatible :V

Well the moving away part is actually part of a larger plan, I am quite over-dramatic though.
According to the prompt, the drivers are there, but I wouldn't even know they are installed, nothing to do with Nvidia appears what-so-ever, weird.
Ok so try this:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-310 nvidia-settings-experimental-310 nvidia-common
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates nvidia-common
No idea if this will work, if not you *can* try doing "sudo apt-get remove fglrx-*" and rebooting. Although with the state your system in this could possibly just leave you stranded in a shell (i have no idea really :/)

Also, stop steeling my automerges D:

Really? How come? I'm running those drivers specifically on my netbook and on my desktop, and I've never had problems with them. They work fine with the latest on Gentoo it seems, currently running Mesa 9.0.1 from the Sabayon repositories, and my games don't have any problems either, despite running on a netbook.
Granted, I am not running Xorg 1.13 yet either, but that's coming out next week. So far, HDMI support is fine with the integrated 6290 I've got on my netbook, and I'm not gonna complaing about my 4670 on my desktop either.
But how are they outdated?

I am running Arch so by definition of "outdated" is quite skewed, but I am running Xorg 1.13 and I have a hybrid graphics that doesn't work because the version of the Intel driver that fglrx depends on is also quite out of date and doesn't support 1.13

Try the fglrx thing. It could also be a retarded configuration issue, try making a new account and loggin in like that?
If that doesn't fix it, something else fucked up and I'm fresh out of ideas, and at that point my only suggestion would be reinstalling ubuntu or trying a different distro (like arch).

Basically it means you remove all of your vedio drivers and so your stuck with a command line interface. I don't stink this will happen, but you never know.
What *should* happen, is ubuntu will re-enable/re-install the open source driver automatically, giving you back your desktop.
