Does anyone here use a swap of more than 256mb?
Does anyone here use a swap of more than 256mb?

I tried upgrading GNOME 3.2 to 3.4 from the testing repo on Arch, and now GNOME doesn't do anything but display my desktop wallpaper and hang. So I removed Gnome, and reinstalled it. Same thing. Is this because it's from the testing repo? I just want GNOME to support user themes :(
Did you upgrade your entire system from [testing[? I think 3.4 refuses to work without shit being 100% up to date.
In my uni course we've started looking at Linux and for an assignment have been asked to compare the ls command to the nautilus file browser for viewing file information. Seems simple enough and it is however I am unsure whether the properties menu is a part of the nautilus file browser or not. If anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.

That Linux course is the most ridiculously simple one I've seen so far if you're doing computer science.
installed arch and its very cool, though steam doesn't seem to work
i get the "no card selector" error and steam crashes right after showing the "connecting to account" prompt. using xf86-video-intel driver for my integrated gpu

It's a part of an 'introduction to IT' class which covers a fairly broad range of IT topics. The Linux part is just a brief part of the operating systems topic.
So is the properties menu a part of the nautilus file browser?

Yeah.
whenever i attempt to install ubuntu on my laptop it freezes never to be thawed when i try to connect to a wifi network/proceed past the wifi selection page. what should i do?
Use the alternative install ISO files.
You won't get a purrdeh install tool or live session, but that's not much important anyway.

You need to install your 32-bit drivers. (lib32-intel-dri)
You may also need lib32-libpng and lib32-mpg123
Does anyone know how to make ubuntu keep using an EDID after the monitor is unpluged? The reason I ask is that ubuntu forces my 1920x1080 monitor to go to 640x480, because It doesn't get the EDID over a DVI cable. I tried with a VGA, and it recognised it, but I would prefer if I didn't have to use a VGA cable.
Also, I apoligise for the spelling errors. I'm not used to not having spellcheck.
Why would Ubuntu or Fedora hang at the default wallpaper whenever I insert the disc to install it? (Just needing options on why.)
Why would Ubuntu or Fedora hang at the default wallpaper whenever I insert the disc to install it? (Just needing options on why.)
Most likely candidate is a bad copy of the disc. Hardware issues are also a possibility, but unlikely. Try burning at the slowest supported speed and validating the data afterwards.
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this?

That's what I did afterwards first, and to no avail. Would both being installed with GNOME 3 have something to do with that?

Are you using the most up to date version of sfml? I had this problem, I think mine was because I was trying to use 3d and SFML graphics.
Have you tryed using ati drivers?

I just cloned and compiled everything. ATI Drivers break basically everything. I also seem to be getting generally shit performance on basically everything (i.e. minecraft is a slideshow where I get perfect performance on my windows install).

Ati cards have a tendency to be absolute shyte. that might be it.
Nevermind my earlier problem - I'm a giant dumbass!
I fucking forgot to call Display(), so I never actually painted anything.

Probably not, but you never know. What hardware do you have?

Are you creating the textures after the window is created or before?
Edit: Gah.
Guh. If anybody here is running Gentoo on a netbook, I do not envy you. Just building Cinnamon and Spotify (Well, I'm not building Spotify) and their requirements is driving me insane due to the sheer amount of time. I know you can install binary-based package managers for it, but even getting to that point would be beyond frustrating for me.
Just took the HDD out of my 2002 P4 machine and stuck it in my new build and Ubuntu 9.10 loaded up as if nothing changed.
That's always a nice alternative to Windows's "HARDWARE HAS CHANGED, REACTIVATE"
August Dvorak was an educational psychologist and professor of education at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.[22] Dvorak became interested in the keyboard layout while serving as an advisor to Gertrude Ford, who was writing her master's thesis on typing errors. Touch typing had come into wide use by that time, so when Dvorak studied the QWERTY layout he concluded that the QWERTY layout needed to be replaced. Dvorak was joined by his brother-in-law William Dealey, who was a professor of education at the then North Texas State Teacher's College in Denton, Texas.
Dvorak and Dealey's objective was to scientifically design a keyboard to decrease typing errors, speed up typing, and lessen typer fatigue. They engaged in extensive research while designing their keyboard layout. In 1914 and 1915, Dealey attended seminars on the science of motion and later reviewed slow-motion films of typists with Dvorak. Dvorak and Dealey meticulously studied the English language, researching the most used letters and letter combinations. They also studied the physiology of the hand. The result in 1932 was the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard.[23]
In 1933, Dvorak started entering typists trained on his keyboard into the International Commercial Schools Contest, which were typing contests sponsored by typewriter manufacturers consisting of professional and amateur contests. The professional contests had typists sponsored by typewriter companies to advertise their machines. Ten times from 1934–41, Dvorak's typists won first in their class events. In the 1935 contest alone, nine Dvorak typists won twenty awards. Dvorak typists were so successful that in 1937 the Contest Committee barred Dvorak's typists for being "unfair competition" until Dvorak protested. In addition, QWERTY typists did not want to be placed near Dvorak typists because QWERTY typists were disconcerted by the noise produced from the fast typing speeds made by Dvorak typists.[24]
Dvorak has such a rich history and he put so much work into it that I feel bad that Colemak is statistically shown to be better.
I'm getting used to Colemak.
what would the wget command be to scan an ENTIRE website and download all of, lets say, the torrent files from it?
[editline]14th April 2012[/editline]
wget -r -A "*.torrent" -w 5 http://www.thepiratebay.se
right now i am trying this but it looks like 1 layer deep then quits

You *could* install Sabayon instead? It runs really well on netbooks too, and it has both portage and entropy (a binary package manager), which allows you to install your applications fast and easy, and to compile them with custom USE flags if you find a need for it.

The Pirate Bay doesn't even use .torrent files.

Oh, no, I use Arch. I was just complaining about the compile time for window managers and such from the AUR. I don't know how anybody could use portage on a low-end PC and stay sane.
Soo, about that ZFS on Linux.
Anyone else having any thoughts, experience or opinions on it, or am I all alone with that here?
[SUB]PS: it's easy to install for those with Ubuntu (and presumably also Debian 6)[/SUB]

They still have some on the site, though they're busy culling them out.

I think it would be way more useful to generate a list of magnet links, or lists of magnet links.
Or, if you insist on using .torrent files, generate .torrent files from magnet links.
Compiz runs like outright shit on my laptop.
this should not be, my late-2007 late (as in now dead) macbook could (and did) handle it better than this.
